Qin Li quickly chimed in, "I’ll go too. Once Jiujiu’s registration is sorted, I need to get the village head’s signature, then bring Jiujiu’s household registration to the township police station. We just need to fill in Jiujiu’s name."
"We can return home tomorrow and come back on Saturday then." Zhuang Shuxian had initially planned to stay for a couple of days, but plans always change.
"That would work, I need to get the paperwork for Jiujiu’s registration anyway." Qin Li nodded in agreement.
Jiujiu sat Zhuang Shuxian down on the bed, still clinging to a thought. "Grandma, take off your shoes and put your legs up on the bed. I will massage them for you."
Zhuang Shuxian laughed heartily in approval, "Jiujiu is so thoughtful, even worrying about Grandma’s leg pain."
The interaction between grandmother and granddaughter was warm and natural.
After dinner, somehow by talking it out, Jiujiu agreed to accompany Zhuang Shuxian to stay at the guest house overnight.
Lu Zhanguo and Gu Xiaobei accompanied them to the guest house and ensured they were settled in properly.
On the way back, Gu Xiaobei held Lu Zhanguo’s hand, swaying it back and forth. It had been a while since they had time alone together. Gu Xiaobei walked especially slow, and Lu Zhanguo had to take short steps to match her pace.
"Aunt Jin wants to adopt Jiujiu, what do you think?" Gu Xiaobei remembered the conversation she had with Qin Li in the afternoon.
"Did you agree?" Lu Zhanguo was not surprised, he saw how genuinely affectionate Zhuang Shuxian was towards Jiujiu during dinner.
Gu Xiaobei pinched Lu Zhanguo’s hand playfully, "How could I just make that decision? We should respect Jiujiu’s feelings. But I worry about Auntie and Uncle because they’re getting old. It wouldn’t be easy for them to take care of Jiujiu."
"It shouldn’t be a problem, Uncle Jin hasn’t retired yet, and they are financially stable. Aunt Jin is also just in her fifties and in good health. Having Jiujiu might give her a moral boost."
After hearing Lu Zhanguo’s analysis, Gu Xiaobei had to agree. However, she felt a bit disappointed. If Jiujiu really left with Zhuang Shuxian, she would miss her a lot.
Lu Zhanguo noticed Gu Xiaobei’s sudden quietness as she lowered her head. Suspecting something, he asked, "What’s wrong?"
Gu Xiaobei opened her mouth reluctantly, "Do you think I have some complications because of the miscarriage last time? I can’t seem to get pregnant."
Lu Zhanguo didn’t know how to respond. He was relatively open-minded about having children, believing that if it’s meant to happen, it will. Seeing Gu Xiaobei’s frustration, he wasn’t sure how to comfort her, but tried to reassure her by saying, "Don’t rush, it will surely happen."
"I am in a rush." Gu Xiaobei argued. She had her own reasons. Now that they’re in the countryside, they have ample time to take care of a child. If one day Lu Zhanguo gets a job transfer to a city or a bigger town, by then their child would be older and she would have free time to start her own small business.
However, their potential child seemed to become more elusive the more anxious she got.
Seeing his wife become so upset, Lu Zhanguo tightened his grip on her hand silently comforted her. As they reached the entrance of the military camp, he was so engrossed in comforting her, that he forgot to release her hand. The sight of their commander holding hands with his wife left the guards flabbergasted. Their stoic leader was surprisingly trendy.
Once they were home and washed up, Gu Xiaobei kneeled on the bed and curiously asked Lu Zhanguo, who was changing out of his clothes, "They said if we have sex the way dogs do, I would likely have a son. What is that position?"
Lu Zhanguo was thankful for his steady footing, otherwise, he might’ve tipped headfirst into the washbasin. He turned to look at Gu Xiaobei, a bemused expression on her face.
"Who told you this?" Lu Zhanguo felt his temples pulsating.
"People were talking about it." Gu Xiaobei, not entirely clueless, was only interested in what that position was.
"Try to distance yourself when they start these conversations," Lu Zhanguo didn’t want his wife to be influenced by these crass jokes. Little did he know that Gu Xiaobei already had a dirty sense of humor.
"Why?" Seeing Lu Zhanguo’s awkward reaction, she finally understood. He was actually embarrassed. She burst out laughing. He had no issues performing the act but was embarrassed to talk about it.
She felt amused and decided to tease Lu Zhanguo further. She looked at him with gleaming eyes, "You want to explain? Or maybe we could do a demonstration?"
Lu Zhanguo felt his face heat up, this girl really had no sense of shame.
Observing Lu Zhanguo’s frozen stance, Gu Xiaobei rolled on the bed, laughing.
Lu Zhanguo walked over to her, pinned her under him, and held her captive in his arms. "You little devil! You can really say anything, can’t you?" he exclaimed.
"Well, that’s the fun part of being in a relationship! Besides, while I’m all talk, you’re all action. We make a perfect match!" Gu Xiaobei giggled and wrapped her arms around his neck.
Lu Zhanguo couldn’t help but laugh at the sight of Gu Xiaobei’s hilarious antics. He playfully bit her lip, "Alright, let me show you then."
After a night of intense passion, Gu Xiaobei bemoaned how she was misled. Talking about it was fun, but the actual act was nearly fatal, it was like having her bones cracked.
Gu Xiaobei laid on the bed, watching Lu Zhanguo go out to fetch water. It bothered her how physically inferior she was.
Once Lu Zhanguo had finished cleaning, he was immediately entangled by Gu Xiaobei, who was acting like an octopus. "Have you done this with someone else before?"
Lu Zhanguo was taken aback before realization washed over him. He chuckled and replied, "No, only with you."
"Then how do you know these positions?" Gu Xiaobei asked suspiciously.
"Figured it out myself." Lu Zhanguo wouldn’t tell her that he learned it from his comrades’ dirty jokes. He knew that Gu Xiaobei, being the curious cat she was, would definitely want to hear these jokes if he told her.
"Hmm, you’re quite talented..." Gu Xiaobei doubted him. Since when did males not share dirty jokes with each other? This man was too cunning, she couldn’t outsmart him.

Winter was the perfect season to sleep in. Gu Xiaobei cocooned herself inside the warm blanket, sleeping till dawn.

Gu Xiaobei was too comfortable to want to get out of bed. Winter was perfect for hibernation. Thinking of Zhuang Shuxian leaving for the city today, she got out of bed reluctantly.
After she finished washing, Zhuang Shuxian brought Jiujiu back and even brought breakfast from the guest house for Xiaobei.
Gu Xiaobei heated the food on the lid of the stove, planning to eat once Zhuang Shuxian and Jiujiu were back.
On the way, Zhuang Shuxian walked hand in hand with Jiujiu, probably planning to send her to school. Gu Xiaobei thought of accompanying them until the camp gate and then waiting for Qin Li’s ride there.
Watching the two leading the way, hand in hand, Qin Li said with some helplessness, "They were whispering to each other, chattering till late."
"What did they talk about that made them hit it off so well?" Gu Xiaobei asked curiously, looking at the growing bond between the two.
"They went over Jiujiu’s childhood, who was nice to her at home, whether her meals were adequate... In a nutshell, it was very detailed." Qin Li worried that Zhuang Shuxian was growing too attached to Jiujiu. If Jiujiu decided against the Jin family’s adoption, it would break the old woman’s heart.
