Chapter 167: Chapter 167: Scum_1

Wang Chuanjiang didn’t utter a word, but from his complexion it was apparent that it was all nonsense. After a long moment of silence, he said, "Do you have anyone to prove that we never kissed?"

Hearing the word ’kiss’ from his mouth, Gu Xiaobei felt disgusted.

Gu Xiaobei now understood. This piece of scum must have colluded with Chi Xiaoyue to paint her in a negative light when people from the courtyard were around.

However, this guy whose eye was swollen from a nasty infection was totally incompetent. She snorted dismissively, then said, "Since you keep bringing up the food coupon issue, let’s discuss it. I remember your family was on hard times and you borrowed five kilograms of national food coupons from me. Many years have passed, you should pay me back now."

Wang Chuanjiang, infuriated, retorted, "Those were stolen from your home and given to me, how can that be considered borrowing?"

"Do you have someone to prove that I gave them to you? Five kilograms of food coupons, national ones no less! How could I be so generous to give them to you?" Gu Xiaobei disdainfully responded. Although she didn’t know whether these food coupons were valuable, from the original owner’s tone, it seemed they were substantial.

"You, you’re being absurd!" Wang Chuanjiang.

"Let’s forget about that for now, give me the cash equivalent of the five kilograms of food coupons today. As for the kissing episode, I would rather kiss a toad than to kiss you. So after you pay back my food coupons, we can go to the military district to clear this up. I’m tired of your never-ending antics," Gu Xiaobei said bluntly. She then turned to Ge Chunling and asked, "How much can five kilograms of national food coupons be exchanged for?"

Ge Chunling, not being foolish, now understood what Wang Chuanjiang was truly up to in slandering Gu Xiaobei. She answered with slight dissatisfaction, "Why should we cash it out? It’s hard to find five kilograms of national food coupons these days."

"Alright then, Wang Chuanjiang, you should return the food coupons."

Upon hearing that money and food coupons were being demanded, Liu Ying became anxious. She turned to Wang Chuanjiang and asked, "Did you or did you not kiss her? Did you borrow her food coupons?"

"No!" Wang Chuanjiang replied indignantly.

Liu Ying, now with an air of assertiveness yelled at Gu Xiaobei, "There was no such incident, you are slandering him." 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂

"Who slandering whom first? So, nothing happened, right?" Gu Xiaobei coldly stared at Wang Chuanjiang.

"That’s right, nothing happened." Wang Chuanjiang decided to stick to his denial.

"Fine, you say nothing happened, right?" Gu Xiaobei turned around, asked the manager for a paper and pen, and started writing. Then she turned back to Wang Chuanjiang and said, "Either come over and sign your name, or we’ll go straight to the military district right now."

As Wang Chuanjiang grabbed the paper from the counter to look, he was livid.

The paper read: Parties involved: Gu Xiaobei, Wang Chuanjiang. Only friends as classmates, no other relationships. If any rumors emerge hereafter, Wang Chuanjiang will be held responsible.

Gu Xiaobei slammed the pencil in front of Wang Chuanjiang, "Understood? Sign your name if you do. If you don’t want to, we can go to the military district now. Let’s see who everyone would believe, you or me."

Truth be told, if they were to really go to the military district, right or wrong can’t be determined based on this. And either way, it wouldn’t be good for Gu Xiaobei. She knew that Wang Chuanjiang was nothing but a coward and hoped he wouldn’t dare go.

Sure enough, seeing Gu Xiaobei’s relentless attitude, despite his annoyance, Wang Chuanjiang cowered. He was unsure what might happen at the military district, and knew the military officials could only side with Lu Zhanguo. They wouldn’t make things easy for him.

Observing this, Liu Ying promptly urged Wang Chuanjiang forward, not forgetting to add, "Also, write off the debt concerning the food coupons."

"Once he signs, it’s written off," Xiaobei squinted at Wang Chuanjiang.

"Then hurry up and sign, why are you still standing there?" Liu Ying urged Wang Chuanjiang. She didn’t care about the content of the paper as long as it didn’t cost her any money.

Wang Chuanjiang’s face twisted in anger, he picked up the pencil, and quickly signed his name. He then tossed the pencil and left in a huff.

Seeing Wang Chuanjiang’s departure, Gu Xiaobei picked up the pencil and added a line of words at the blank space above the signature with a smirk. After folding the paper, she put it into her pocket.

Ge Chunling, concerned, asked, "Sister-in-law, are you alright?"

"I’m fine, I’m fine, grab your fabric, we still have to go to the tailor’s. I guess we’ve missed the supply truck," Gu Xiaobei said with a smile as she urged Chunling.

"How about I treat you to some wonton soup later, and then we can head back?"

"Why bother with expensive and unappetizing wontons? Let’s get a baked bun from the market, we can eat and walk." Gu Xiaobei said gruffly.

Ge Chunling knew Xiaobei was just trying to save her money. She didn’t argue and thought to herself, this Gu Xiaobei didn’t seem to have any connection to that man earlier.

The two, carrying their fabric, head to the tailor’s shop in the marketplace. Gu Xiaobei didn’t know how to design clothes, but she told the tailor to take in the waist of the small lapel suit a bit more. This way, when worn, it should accentuate a woman’s figure.

After leaving their clothes at the tailor’s, they exited the market where fresh buns had just come out from the baker’s oven. They were five cents each. Ge Chunling quickly forked out the cash to buy four, for fear that Gu Xiaobei would compete to pay.

She wrapped two buns in oil paper for Gu Xiaobei and two more for herself.

Gu Xiaobei didn’t refuse, she took the buns and said, "Wait a moment, I need to buy some eggs."

After buying the eggs, the two exited the market. Since they’d missed the supply truck anyway, they leisurely strolled back to the troops.

With one hand holding eggs and the other holding a bun, Gu Xiaobei took a bite. She glanced at the Xinhua Bookstore and almost choked on her food: Wang Chuanjiang was sweeping the doorstep. Turns out he was assigned to work here again. She didn’t have to think to know that this was another instance of Chi Xiaoyue’s meddling.

Why did he stop working with Gao Dailin?

Likewise, the bookstore must have problems too. She had to hurry home and inform Lu Zhanguo.

Whilst happily munching on her bun and thinking, Gu Xiaobei glanced at Ge Chunling and curiously asked, "Why aren’t you eating?"

"I’m not accustomed to eating on the street, it’s unseemly..." As soon as Ge Chunling finished talking, she realized her words were inappropriate, and quickly shut her mouth, smiling awkwardly.

Gu Xiaobei, unbothered, continued to eat. In the 21st century, there were plenty of people who walked down the street while eating pancakes and drinking soy milk.

"Sis, we’ve been waiting for ages," they had just turned the corner when they saw Xiangyang standing by a big truck, waving at them.

Feeling a bit embarrassed for keeping everyone waiting, Gu Xiaobei and Ge Chunling apologized.

"The trip is quite a distance, nobody had any other business, so it was not an issue to wait for a while."

Gu Xiaobei thought: Sure you say that, but do you know what everyone else is thinking? Making us out to be special like this just attracts resentment. Such blatant sycophancy disgusted her.

Hopping onto the truck quickly with Ge Chunling, they once again apologized to the other army wives.
