Back to the 1980s: Transmigrated as the Bigshot's Pampered Wife-Chapter 141: Donkey Meat Menzi
Dong Qiming’s eyes flew open in astonishment. The smile on his face froze instantly, his mouth forming an ’O’. He just stood there, frozen like a statue.
RING...
"Come on, let’s get to class," Gu Jiaojiao prompted before walking into the classroom without a backward glance.
Dong Qiming mechanically followed her into the classroom, still in a state of shock.
He was so shocked the hairs on his skin stood on end. His mind, dazed and confused, was a complete blank.
He didn’t hear a single word the teacher said from the podium.
’I’d always hoped my uncle would have bad luck, but this time, he messed with Cousin Jiaojiao. Even rotting in jail for life wouldn’t be enough to quell my anger.’
Dong Qiming remembered his cousin-in-law’s bottomless black eyes. Every time they looked his way, it felt like an icy blade stabbing straight into his heart.
And there was no way Cousin Jiaojiao’s adoptive father and her older brother would let his uncle off the hook.
’No wonder Dad would rather get a divorce than agree to help. How could he possibly help!’
It was, unsurprisingly, another class period where Gu Jiaojiao was praised. She walked up to the podium with natural grace to explain the problems on the test paper.
Usually, Dong Qiming’s applause was the loudest, but today, he still hadn’t snapped out of his daze.
"Dong Qiming, what’s wrong? Are you still worried about your parents’ divorce?" his deskmate asked, giving him a gentle nudge.
"N-no. This time, my parents are definitely getting a divorce!" Dong Qiming whispered back.
The two of them had been deskmates from elementary school all the way to high school. They were basically childhood best friends, so they knew everything about each other’s family affairs.
"No wonder. You didn’t even clap after your cousin finished her explanation. You’re usually the most enthusiastic one."
Another class period ended. "Cousin Jiaojiao, I... did he hurt you?"
"Him? Hurt me? Your cousin-in-law isn’t a pushover, you know. He beat those four guys until they were half-crippled."
"That’s good. Cousin Jiaojiao, you shouldn’t leave the compound gates from now on. No matter how brazen they are, they wouldn’t dare to come inside the compound."
Dong Qiming spoke, patting his chest. ’Why didn’t I warn Cousin Jiaojiao sooner!’
"Sigh! You never used to leave the compound gates before. Did your cousin-in-law take you out?"
"Yes, he took me out to find some good food. We ran into those thugs at a corner in the black market."
"From now on, Cousin Jiaojiao, just tell me wherever you want to go, and I’ll give you a ride. My uncle has a lot of thugs working for him too," Dong Qiming said seriously.
"Su Shuochi can take on ten guys, no problem. Don’t you worry," Gu Jiaojiao refused flatly, a smile playing at the corners of her eyes.
’Now that I can drive around whenever I leave the compound, wouldn’t bringing Dong Qiming along just be a hindrance?’
’Besides, I could take down a few thugs myself. It’s just that this body is ridiculously weak and needs more training to get stronger.’ 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮
Gu Jiaojiao couldn’t help but complain inwardly: ’This is like a high-performance engine paired with a walking tractor. It can barely chug along.’
’Otherwise, I would have taken down all four of those thugs myself that day. What would there have been for Su Shuochi to do!’
Dong Qiming even followed her when she went to the restroom. Thankfully, the men’s room was next door, or else Gu Jiaojiao would have thought he was a pervert.
Zhang Mingyu hadn’t been following Gu Jiaojiao around since yesterday. He needed to hurry up and study for his exams.
’I’ve always seen Gu Jiaojiao as a sister-in-law. Even though she married Su Shuochi, I still felt the need to protect her like one.’
’But I now realize that, without me even noticing, Gu Jiaojiao has already surpassed me. I have to work hard too, and strive to get into Imperial University with her.’
After four periods, school was out. Su Shuochi appeared at the school gate right on time. "Jiaojiao, over here."
"Your husband’s here. I’ll get going, then," Dong Qiming said by way of farewell.
"Brother~ I’m waiting for you at the school gate." Dong Baozhu waved at him, and the siblings left together.
Gu Jiaojiao pushed Su Shuochi’s wheelchair as they went. "Su Shuochi, did you go home this afternoon?"
"Not yet. I got some blueprints from a few classmates and went to the courtyard to look them over. I made a few changes. I’ll show you when we get back."
Gu Jiaojiao saw a crowd heading toward the hospital inside the compound. ’Don’t tell me Sheng Yueyue is still wrangling with the Li family.’
"What’s going on?" Su Shuochi was always curious about anything that interested his wife.
Gu Jiaojiao recounted what Dong Qiming had told her, finishing with a cold snort.
"If General Sheng tries to pull strings for his daughter to get Huang Ya out, I won’t agree to any settlement."
"Don’t worry, honey. He fainted from anger at his daughter just last night. He should have come to his senses by now."
"I don’t care if he’s come to his senses or not, as long as he doesn’t bother me. I took out the meat from the donkey you butchered at noon, and the river snail meat too."
Su Shuochi noticed another cardboard box on his wheelchair. He had butchered a donkey at noon in their newly bought courtyard.
"Tonight, our family is having an all-donkey-meat feast! We’ll make five donkey dishes. Hehe, the unsaturated fatty acid content in donkey meat..."
"...especially its linoleic and linolenic acids, which have an exceptionally high biological value, is much higher than in pork or beef."
"I’ve heard that too. ’Dragon meat in heaven, donkey meat on earth.’ And donkey meat made by my wife is even more delicious."
Su Shuochi never missed an opportunity to shower his sweet young wife with praise.
This made Gu Jiaojiao burst out laughing. She replied without a shred of modesty, "Of course! No one’s cooking tastes better than mine right now. The main reason is that I have all the right seasonings."
"Haha~ Wifey, it’s because your skills are just that good. Don’t be so modest~"
When the couple got home, Mr. Su and Su’s mother were already there. "Jiaojiao, what delicious dishes are you making tonight? I’ve already made the braised pork belly with preserved mustard greens."
"Shu Ci bought a donkey. Tonight we’re making donkey meat soup, braised donkey meat, donkey meat terrine, and soy-sauced donkey meat."
Gu Jiaojiao had already planned this on the way home, so she rattled off the list without taking a breath.
"Is braised donkey meat similar to braised pig’s trotters?" Su’s mother asked curiously.
"Yes, it’s quite similar. Why don’t you start on the braised donkey meat then? I’ll make the donkey meat soup and the donkey meat terrine."
"Jiaojiao, how do you make the donkey meat terrine? Can you teach me?" Su’s mother was interested in any new recipe.
"Of course. First, soak sweet potato vermicelli in warm water until soft. Then, boil it in water until it expands and becomes transparent. Take it out and drain it well.
Stir-fry some minced meat with a little salad oil, minced ginger, and chopped scallions, then set it aside. The minced donkey meat should also be braised and chopped beforehand.
Place the sweet potato vermicelli in a basin, crack in an egg, and season with chicken bouillon powder, salt, pepper, cooking wine, thirteen-spice powder, sugar, and MSG.
Then, add the stir-fried minced meat and sweet potato starch and mix well. Pour the mixture into a basin greased with lard, spread it flat, and steam for half an hour. After taking it out, just let it cool completely."
"I’ve got it memorized, Jiaojiao. You must be tired from studying, so sit down and rest for a bit. I’ll make it, and you can just watch and correct me if I do anything wrong."
Su’s mother declared that she had it memorized and immediately started cooking.
When Old Sir Gu and several other important figures returned, they saw that the Su family had already set up two tables, laden with a large tureen of soup and several large basins of donkey meat.
There was also a bowl of braised pork belly with preserved mustard greens. The pork, arranged neatly in the bowl, was golden-brown. It looked rich but not greasy, and the savory sauce slowly spread over the meat.
A dish of scrambled eggs with scallions, the pale yellow of the eggs scattered amongst the tender green scallions, sat quietly on the table...
