Chapter 352: Chapter 352: Watching the Spectacle

Just as a "ding" sounded, the upgrade began.

Watching a thousand gold coins vanish instantly, Su Xiaoxiao felt her heart ache as if it were bleeding.

The upgrade takes time. She yawned, stretched, and climbed onto the kang, covering herself with the blanket to sleep peacefully.

After a good sleep, the upgraded space in the small warehouse should be ready by tomorrow morning.

Ever since arriving in this era, Su Xiaoxiao had been sleeping well, and today was no exception; she fell asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow.

The next day, before dawn, she was startled awake by a "ding" notification sound.

Blearily, she glanced at her watch. Damn it, it was only four in the morning. Crazy!

She ignored the sound and continued to sleep.

Just as she felt her consciousness drifting back into darkness, she heard the familiar, life-prompting alarm—her wake-up call.

Resigning to fate, she crawled out of the kang, ran her fingers through her messy hair, grumbling—seriously, who invented early shifts?

Still sleepy, too drowsy!

Groggily dressing, she stepped off the kang, performing the motions on autopilot.

Like cattle and horses, her body had developed muscle memory.

Just as she was putting on her shoes and about to leave, she suddenly remembered the small warehouse upgrade, quickly opening the game store, and indeed saw the upgraded version of the small warehouse.

With a thought, she blinked, and found herself inside the small warehouse.

The warehouse space had doubled in size, turning from a single room into a one-bedroom living space. The outer room looked almost the same as before, cluttered with her hoarded stuff.

Curiously, she pushed open the inner door to find a small suite resembling a hotel room.

Unlike the previous enclosed space, the room now had a small window, though looking out of it revealed nothing but an expanse of white, like there was a heavy fog outside.

By the window, there was a single hard bed, a small bedside cabinet at its head, and an air conditioner mounted on the wall at the foot of the bed. Besides that, there was a tiny bathroom with a toilet, water heater, and heater fan.

It really did look like a single room in a hotel.

Great, now she wouldn’t have to shiver while bathing.

In this age, bathing in the dead of winter was a luxury; most rural families only bathed once every one or two months.

Su Xiaoxiao couldn’t stand it, always braving the cold to give herself a sponge bath, turning washing into a battle.

With no time to waste, she hurried out of the small warehouse.

Big brother Su Wenbing and Su Fusheng had already left before dawn to catch the earliest bus back to the factory.

After washing up, Su Xiaoxiao walked to the table, spotting crispy golden walnut cookies and a steaming bowl of cornmeal mush.

Breaking the walnut cookies into small pieces, she soaked them in the bowl and spooned a bit into her mouth.

Back in modern times, she’d noticed how her rural grandmother liked to eat breakfast this way. Trying it for the first time, she found it surprisingly delicious.

The walnut cookies softened in the hot cornmeal, the aroma of corn mixing in, making it tastier still.

Each mouthful was warm and comforting.

Su Xiaoxiao gulped down the big bowl, wiped her mouth with the back of her hand, and called into the inner room, "Mom, I’m off to work."

With her belly warm, stepping outside didn’t feel cold at all.

She hopped onto her bike, heading for the department store.

Almost reaching the village entrance, she saw quite a few villagers gathered as if watching some spectacle.

With some time to spare, Su Xiaoxiao curiously pushed her bike over to have a look.

She wasn’t sure if entertainment in this era was too scarce, but she had become quite interested in such gossip, unable to resist sneaking a glance or two.

Aunt Wang was squeezed in the crowd, watching with relish. Seeing Su Xiaoxiao, she eagerly moved aside, giving her a spot. "Come, Xiaoxiao, stand over here."

Settling into the spot Aunt Wang made, she couldn’t help but ask, "Aunt Wang, what’s going on so early?"

Ahead, a large crowd obscured her view, allowing only a glimpse of a disheveled woman covering her face, sobbing.

Judging by the scene, it looked like someone’s mistress had been caught.

"Did you see? They’re catching a mistress! Running out butt-naked early morning, caught red-handed by the wife."

Peering closely, she found the sobbing young woman’s face unfamiliar. Unable to recognize her, she asked further, "Aunt Wang, whose house is this?"

Aunt Wang leaned in conspiratorially, "You didn’t go to Old Sun’s wedding, did you?"

Typically, when someone in the village got married, most would lend a hand, but because of tensions between her family and Sun Wenbing’s, she hadn’t attended.

Su Xiaoxiao couldn’t help but click her tongue. Just yesterday, Zhang Guilan had been showing off her son’s marriage to her mom, and now Sun Wenbing was already daring to have a mistress?

Curious, she asked, "Where’s the mistress? I don’t see her."

This was a sight worth watching, the commotion involving Sun Wenbing.

She wasn’t necessarily interested in others’ affairs, but anything involving Sun Wenbing? Now that was a must-see.

"Aunt Wang, there are too many people, I can’t see clearly. Let’s move closer."

Excited, Su Xiaoxiao pulled Aunt Wang through the crowd, and just as they reached the front, the sight before her was a shock.

On the ground, a skinny man lay with his upper body naked, enveloped in the embrace of a tall, burly man wearing only bright red briefs.

The skinny man, sensing something, suddenly lifted his head as Su Xiaoxiao gazed at them.

Seeing clearly who it was, Su Xiaoxiao felt a chill. Goodness, it was Sun Wenbing!

Had he undergone some transformation during her absence? Why did he seem so effeminate?

Expecting a wife-versus-mistress showdown, she hadn’t anticipated the mistress being a man. Shocking, just utterly shocking!

Su Xiaoxiao could bet if this happened in modern times, it would make headlines.

"Sun Wenbing, you’re shameless, cheating on me, I’m disgusted. I want a divorce!"

The sobbing woman suddenly cried out, voice hoarse.

Her eyes showed nothing but disgust, unwilling to linger on Sun Wenbing for even a second.

Hearing Sun Wenbing had married, Su Xiaoxiao had thought he’d been turned straight, but this only made him more bent.

Yikes, remembering her connection to the matter, she suddenly felt guilty.

This spectacle might as well stay unwatched, lest she get caught up in it.

Immediately, she stepped back, whispering to Aunt Wang, "Aunt Wang, I need to get to work now."

Aunt Wang, understanding, waved her off. "Go ahead, I’ll tell you what happens later."

Su Xiaoxiao nearly tripped over herself, almost going face-first into the ground.

She wasn’t entirely keen to learn what happened next.

But with Aunt Wang’s good intentions, she couldn’t say much.

Giving Aunt Wang an awkward but polite smile, she quickly slipped away.

Pedaling furiously to the department store, she nearly struck sparks with her bike pedals.

Rushing in with her satchel, she barely stepped inside when someone bumped her shoulder.
