Back to 1984: Let's Work Hard Together to Raise The Kids!-Chapter 192: Business Is Booming
The couple suddenly got busy during the New Year, and Lin Yi couldn’t understand it.
With a bunch of things going on at home, Huang Yuezhen went back, and Lin Yi was so busy he couldn’t even find the time to ask.
It wasn’t until the New Year’s dinner that he finally found the chance to ask the two.
Chen Wenjun didn’t even think before he said, "Dad, I leased a mountain to raise chickens."
"Pfft!" Lin Yi spat out his drink, "Are you crazy? We’re already so busy, and now you’re raising chickens on a mountain? Who are you going to sell them to?"
Lin Qin quickly grabbed a napkin to help him clean up, "Dad! We haven’t finished talking yet, don’t get too excited! Didn’t you say that foreign fast food was too expensive? Wenjun and I thought about it and decided to create our own recipe and open our own fast food restaurant.
If we’re going to open a restaurant, we definitely need a lot of chickens. Luckily, foreign fast food uses mostly young chickens, and in two or three months, they’ll be ready. We’re planning to pick a storefront after the New Year and renovate it nicely to open the restaurant.
Also, didn’t I buy a small storefront in Friendship Square before, right across from an apartment building? We can open a small one there too and sell it a bit cheaper than the others; it definitely won’t be hard to sell."
Lin Yi didn’t understand business, and listening to the couple’s duet, he immediately stopped speaking.
After a while, he finally asked, "Who’s going to raise the chickens?"
Chen Wenjun couldn’t help but laugh, "Dad, I’ve hired villagers near the mountain to help raise them. We currently have ten thousand, and in three months they’ll be ready for use."
Lin Yi was so shocked by this number that he swallowed hard, deciding not to ask anything further.
Since the business was still in preparation, Lin Yi wasn’t sure if it would be profitable. When Lin Ying’s family came over on the second day of the new year, he didn’t mention it, fearing it would add pressure to Lin Qin and Wenjun.
The busy time flew by, and in the blink of an eye, three months passed.
The fried chicken burger restaurant that had been making Lin Yi anxious finally opened.
The store was located near the city’s experimental elementary school.
Lin Qin had someone distribute flyers near the school, with pictures modeled after McDonald’s fried chicken burgers, which quickly attracted a wave of customers.
On the first day of opening,
the place was packed to the brim, and many customers had no choice but to take their orders to-go.
Even so, they had to queue up to get a number.
The level of popularity was so intense that Lin Yi’s eyes almost popped out.
For a solid week, the fried chicken burger shop’s hype kept escalating, especially when people who had tried McDonald’s praised the shop’s burgers, attracting even more curious customers.
Riding on this momentum, Lin Qin opened the small shop in Friendship Square too.
The location was really small, only suitable for takeout.
Even so, there were plenty of people lining up there.
The couple watched for two days and, seeing how good the business was, decided to open the store on Zhongshan Road as well.
After all, the initial investment only involved managing staff and equipment. As for the money spent on leasing the mountain for chickens, that had already been earned back.
Ever since opening the fried chicken burger shop, Chen Wenjun seemed to have a breakthrough moment, suddenly getting the hang of things.
He introduced several seafood products in the store, like deep-sea cod burgers, shrimp, calamari rings, and octopus balls, adding them all to the menu.
This made the store even busier, and the two people in the kitchen couldn’t keep up; they needed to hire three more people.
Ping’an and Yaya often heard their classmates mentioning the burger shop at school.
Every time classmates talked about it, they just smiled silently and nodded along.
On Friday after school, since there were no classes the next day, Yaya’s desk mate, Xue Lingxue, clung to her arm and whined, "Xinyue, please go with me to eat! I’ve been craving it for so long, and I finally saved up ten yuan to enjoy it!"
A burger at the shop was three and a half yuan, and with fries and Coke, a meal was six yuan, leaving four yuan available to order other snacks.
If it were McDonald’s, ten yuan would only get you one burger.
Chen Xinyue, worn down by her, had no choice but to surrender, "Okay, okay! But I need to tell my brother, he has to come too."
Over the years, they had gotten used to going everywhere together as siblings.
Xue Lingxue wasn’t aware of the Chen family’s situation and just thought it was an instruction from adults; she nodded in agreement without much thought.
After school, the two waited for Chen Ruiyu at the school gate.
Chen Xinyue was chatting with Xue Lingxue when suddenly her shoulder was tapped. She turned around quickly, only to find it was Qu Zhiyang, Chen Ruiyu’s desk mate.
"Qu Zhiyang! Where’s my brother?" Chen Xinyue looked around behind Qu Zhiyang but didn’t see him.
Qu Zhiyang clutched his chest dramatically, "Xinyue, you’re so heartless, ignoring me standing right in front of you like I’m air."
Chen Xinyue blushed bright red.
Before she could retort, Chen Ruiyu came over and punched Qu Zhiyang on the arm, "Don’t joke with my sister!"
Qu Zhiyang chuckled awkwardly and immediately behaved, "Xinyue, can I join you guys for burgers? My treat!"
Chen Xinyue was about to refuse, but Chen Ruiyu promptly agreed, "You said it, if I eat so much that you go broke, you better not cry."
"Hmph! Do you think I’m poor? Just try to eat me into bankruptcy!" Qu Zhiyang puffed out his chest with a look of mock arrogance, his tall stature making him appear like a rich but foolish young man.
Catching the humor, Chen Xinyue and Xue Lingxue burst out laughing at the same time.
The four of them pedaled their bikes towards the city’s experimental elementary school.
They laughed and talked all the way there.
Sure enough, when they arrived, there were no seats available.
Xue Lingxue looked disappointed when Chen Ruiyu gently suggested, "Let’s get it to-go and eat at the park. We can play there for a while too. I’ll call grandpa and let him know."
"Great, great!" Xue Lingxue cheered, instantly cheered up.
While Chen Ruiyu was on the phone, Xue Lingxue whispered shyly to Chen Xinyue, "Xinyue, your brother is so handsome and gentle."
Chen Xinyue nodded, "My brother has always been like that."
Upon hearing this, admiration deepened in Xue Lingxue’s eyes.
Everyone at school knew Chen Ruiyu had health issues, but so what? Compared to his incredibly handsome face, those issues seemed negligible.
Qu Zhiyang glanced at the lovestruck Xue Lingxue and teased, "There are lots of girls who like my bro. Want me to help you out?"
Xue Lingxue ducked shyly behind Chen Xinyue.
Chen Xinyue gave Qu Zhiyang a fierce stare, "What nonsense are you talking about!"
Qu Zhiyang quickly retreated, sneaking over to complain to Chen Ruiyu, "Your sister is so fierce, I like it."
"You’re crazy." Chen Ruiyu rolled his eyes at Qu Zhiyang, hung up the phone, and turned to leave.
After some laughter and banter, everything they ordered was ready for takeout.
Chen Ruiyu asked a server for a large tablecloth before they left.
Qu Zhiyang was amazed, "Wow! This place offers such great service? They even give you a tablecloth?"
"We have to return it!" Chen Ruiyu pulled back the eager Qu Zhiyang and hung most of the food bags on his bike.
Prompting Qu Zhiyang to wail and protest the whole way.
They arrived at the park where, at that time, with the weather being hot, the city center park got crowded quickly in the evening.
Taking a big bite of his burger, Qu Zhiyang said contentedly, "You guys should aim for our school for your high school entrance examinations too!"
All three nodded.
