Chapter 68: Annual Sport II
Chapter 68
The announcer’s voice crackled from the loudspeaker, making people glance up as the loud voice rose above the chatter and giggles that filled the field. "Next up, the highlight of today’s event: The Family Relay! Where the father carries the mother and child!"
Aaron tilted his head toward the speaker, a soft chuckle escaping his lips. "Did he just say carry?" he asked, his head tilted while arching a brow in amusement as he glanced over at Katherine, whose eyes widened.
Katherine whipped her head to the announcer, then to Aaron’s smug look, then took a step back. She blinked, her lips parting slightly in disbelief. "I’m not that light!" she gasped, her hands on her chest.
Aaron smirked, then rolled his sleeves, as his fingers worked the first two buttons of his shirt, revealing his toned chiseled chest, and Katherine gulped with reddened cheeks.
"You’re perfect, babe," he said smoothly, flashing her a grin as he flexed his arm dramatically, biceps bulging beneath his rolled-up sleeve. "Besides, all my morning jogs and exercise won’t be futile if I ain’t able to carry my family," he said, flashing that teasing smirk that made her heart beat stupidly fast.
Katherine could feel her cheeks warming as she shifted on her feet nervously, looking at the crowd shyly. "Stop it," she hissed in a low tone. "People are watching."
Aaron grinned boyishly, his dimple revealed, "Let them, babe." He shrugged, unbothered. He didn’t care, in as much as he’d be able to be closer to Katherine, feel her heartbeat on his back.
"Seriously, Aaron, I’m not—"
"Get on, babe." He crouched low to the ground, back toward her. "Don’t make me beg, babe."
Katherine’s cheeks turned pink, her eyes darting nervously toward the other couples already lining up.
"Come on, let’s give them a show," he whispered, his eyes twinkling. Katherine swallowed the lump in her throat and slowly climbed onto his back, her arms wrapping tightly around his neck, her legs loosely around his waist. She could feel her heart pounding erratically in her chest, thundering against him as he adjusted his stance.
"God, I hope I don’t break your back," she mumbled near his ear.
Aaron shuddered a little from the breath on his ear and tilted his head slightly. "If you do, I’ll die happy, babe," he laughed.
"Come on, kiddo, Daddy’s got room for two more," Aaron reached down and scooped Jasmine into one arm, and Hanith into the other. Jasmine shrieked in surprise, laughing hard, and Hanith clutched Aaron’s sleeve, burying his face in Aaron’s neck.
He carried them to the line and grinned. "Alright! Let’s do this!" Aaron yelled, charging forward the moment the whistle blew.
Aaron wobbled at first as he stood up, his grip tightening around Hanith as he found his rhythm. His muscles screamed, but his grin widened with each step.
Laughter erupted around the track as families stumbled into motion. Some parents gave up halfway, panting on the grass. One man tripped over his shoelaces, sending his wife and kid tumbling onto the turf. Another woman carried her husband and child in a bridal style, earning wild cheers. And another couldn’t carry his wife, and the wife hit him, calling him ’weak.’
Streaks of sweat rolled down Aaron’s side as Katherine used her thumb to wipe it. Then he stumbled a little from the touch.
"You better not drop us!" Katherine yelled into his ear, half-laughing, half-panicking as she tightened her arms around his neck.
Aaron huffed, "You are the one causing this, babe," he fired back cheekily, cheeks flushed from running.
Jasmine clapped her hands, cheering from his arm. "Go! Faster! Faster!"
"Hold tight, buddy!" Aaron said to Hanith, adjusting his grip. His muscles screamed, yet he kept going, his jaw clenched and eyes on the finish line.
The crowd was on their feet, cheers echoing across the schoolyard. With a final push, Aaron stumbled across the finish line, gasping for breath as he carefully set the kids down and lowered Katherine. Then, with a dramatic groan, he collapsed onto the grass, chest heaving.
"I’ll never feel my legs again," he wheezed, arms sprawled in the grass.
Katherine fell beside him, her hand on her stomach as she laughed. "You’re ridiculous." freewёbnoνel.com
"Hey, we won, didn’t we?"
"Yes, we did."
Jasmine bounced around, her grin widening. "That’s MY daddy!" she yelled, her voice filled with pride, and everyone within earshot turned to her.
The next event was the sack race—Jasmine hopped in eagerly, her braids bouncing as she tucked herself into the sack. Aaron was still lying on the grass, resting his eyes, and groaned. "You’ve got this, cub. Don’t let anyone beat you!"
Jasmine turned, her eyes twinkling as she walked to the line. "No one’s beating me, Daddy." She hit her chest proudly.
Aaron’s blood thrummed under his skin. That was the second time Jasmine had called him daddy today, and he felt proud of himself.
At the whistle blow, Jasmine launched herself forward, her brow furrowed as she held her sack tighter. She nearly stumbled halfway but caught her balance.
She crossed the finish line first, grinning cheekily with hands pumped in the air, and Aaron jumped to his feet with a whoop, punching the air also. "THAT’S MY LITTLE CUB!" he hollered, and a few heads turned to him.
Hanith was next in the relay race—he was the last person for the relay to take the stick to the finish line. He looked nervous but nodded as his group lined up. Katherine crouched beside him, smoothing his shirt. "Just do your best, okay?" and he nodded again.
Aaron leaned down beside them, his hand gently resting on Hanith’s small shoulder. "I’ll be watching the whole time, son. You got this."
When it was his turn, Hanith collected the stick from his team and steadily picked up the race, his eyes forward. Aaron clapped his hands so loud when Hanith won.
Aaron didn’t let his teammate hug him when he ran across the line. He lifted Hanith high into the air, spinning him once before pulling him into a proud hug.
"You did it, son," Aaron beamed.
"Thank you, Daddy," Hanith muttered.
Katherine watched them, her arms crossed gently under her chest. Her eyes lingered on the moment—so beautiful. On Aaron’s expression and Hanith’s face lighting up happily, his eyes having the spark in them.
Katherine’s eyes softened with warmth, and undiluted happiness buzzed in her. A smile stretched on her lips, her head rolled back as she laughed heartily with the twins’ laughter and Aaron’s cheers.
