Ascension Gates: Rise of the Beast Monarch-Chapter 82: The Top Eight — Dream Domain (Part 2)
The very instant the battle began, the world itself seemed to shift in a way that defied ordinary understanding. There was no explosion to announce the change, no violent surge of energy to warn those watching from the outside. Instead, the transformation was quiet, almost gentle, like a ripple passing through still water. It arrived without force, without sound, and yet it carried a weight far greater than any direct attack.
Aether felt it immediately.
The ground beneath his feet, which had moments ago been solid and unyielding, now seemed uncertain, as though its existence depended on something far more fragile than stone or structure. The air around him thickened, carrying a faint, almost comforting sensation, one that reminded him of drifting into sleep after a long day. It was soothing, deceptively so, and that alone made it dangerous.
He did not move.
He understood, with absolute clarity, that even the smallest careless action could lead him into a situation from which there would be no recovery. This was not a battlefield where strength alone could guide him. This was something far more intricate, far more deceptive.
A short distance ahead, the Dream Rabbit stood quietly, its small, delicate form almost fragile in appearance. It did not radiate power in the conventional sense. It did not intimidate through size or aggression. And yet, its presence filled the entire space, extending far beyond the limits of its physical body.
It was not just standing there.
It was everywhere.
Liora’s voice echoed softly through the distorted space, her tone calm and steady, yet carrying a quiet confidence that did not need to be asserted. "If you choose to move without thinking, even for a single moment, you may find yourself stepping into something you cannot escape from," she said, her words flowing as naturally as the shifting air around them.
Aether’s gaze remained steady as he replied in an equally calm voice, "That is exactly what I expected from you. You would never rely on something as simple as direct confrontation when something far more effective is available."
There was a faint pause before Liora responded again, her voice carrying the slightest trace of approval. "You have learned well. That much is clear."
Her figure stood within his line of sight, and yet there was something fundamentally wrong about the distance between them. She appeared close enough to reach, but at the same time, she felt impossibly far away, as though the space separating them could stretch endlessly at a moment’s notice.
Aether did not trust what he saw.
Not even for a moment.
As the distortion deepened, the battlefield began to transform in ways that went beyond simple illusion. The arena, which had been carefully constructed and reinforced for elite combat, no longer appeared as a single, unified space. Instead, fragments of entirely different locations began to overlap and merge.
For a brief moment, Aether saw the familiar layout of the academy’s training grounds beneath his feet. Then, without warning, that image shifted, replaced by the long, quiet corridors he had walked countless times in the past. Another shift followed, bringing him back to the arena, only for it to fragment again into something unrecognizable.
Memories.
Illusions.
Reality.
All layered together in a seamless, disorienting blend.
From the outside, the audience could still see the battle unfolding within the arena’s boundaries. To them, nothing had changed beyond the faint distortions in the air. But for those inside the domain, the world had been completely rewritten.
The calm voice within Aether’s mind spoke once more, analyzing the situation with precision. "This is not a simple illusion technique. She is not creating false images to mislead you. What she is doing is far more advanced. She is altering the way perception itself functions within this space."
Aether took a slow breath, allowing the sensation of the distorted air to settle around him without resistance. "This is not about deception in the traditional sense," he said quietly. "She is not forcing me to see something that does not exist. She is controlling what I am able to perceive as real."
Liora’s voice followed almost immediately, as though she had been waiting for that exact conclusion. "You are very close," she said, her tone thoughtful. "But understanding the principle is only the first step. The real question is whether you can act on it."
At that moment, the Dream Rabbit moved.
Or rather, it appeared to move.
Three identical figures emerged within Aether’s field of vision. One shifted slightly to the left, another to the right, and the third appeared directly behind him. Each one was perfectly identical in every detail, from the subtle shimmer of its body to the faint distortion surrounding it.
There was no obvious difference.
No clear indication of which one was real.
Aether’s eyes sharpened slightly as he observed them without reacting immediately. After a brief moment, he spoke in a calm, measured tone. "There are three active layers at the moment. Each one overlaps with the others, but they do not operate on the same sequence."
Liora’s voice carried a faint hint of approval as she replied, "That is correct. But recognition alone will not help you. You still need to decide which one to respond to, and more importantly, when to respond."
Aether did not answer her question directly.
Instead, he gave a simple instruction. "Do not chase. Maintain position and observe."
The Flame Sovereign Pup responded instantly, its flames tightening around its body in a controlled layer rather than spreading outward. Its posture remained steady, prepared to react but not to pursue.
The three Dream Rabbits moved simultaneously.
Each one launched an attack from a different direction, converging toward the same point with perfect coordination.
Aether’s voice remained calm. "Move to the right and intercept."
The Flame Pup acted without hesitation, striking at the figure on the right.
Its claw passed through empty space.
There was nothing there.
At that exact moment, a sudden pulse of energy struck from behind. The real Dream Rabbit had attacked from a different sequence, bypassing the expected timing entirely.
The Flame Pup slid backward from the impact, its stance momentarily disrupted but not broken.
Aether did not react outwardly, but his understanding deepened.
"She is not simply hiding the real target," he said quietly. "She is altering the order in which actions occur. The sequence itself is unstable."
The voice within his mind responded immediately. "Exactly. You are not choosing between real and false targets. You are choosing the correct moment within an unstable timeline."
Liora began to walk forward, though her movement did not follow a consistent path. Her figure flickered between positions, not because she was moving quickly, but because the space around her was shifting unpredictably.
"You are adapting faster than I expected," she said, her tone calm but attentive. "Most people would still be trying to identify which image is real."
Aether replied without hesitation, "That approach would only lead to failure. You are not trying to overwhelm me quickly. You are testing how far I can go before I reach my limit."
A faint smile appeared on her lips. "That is true. I have no interest in ending this match quickly. I want to see everything you have learned, and everything you are capable of."
Without warning, the Dream Rabbit lifted its head slightly.
The entire battlefield changed again.
The ground beneath Aether’s feet disappeared completely, replaced by an endless, open field that stretched in every direction. Above him, a dark sky shimmered with faint, distant stars.
The transformation was seamless.
Perfect.
"This is the second layer of the domain," Liora said softly. "Everything you see here is complete. There are no external references left to guide you."
Aether slowly turned his head, taking in the environment without rushing to react. Everything felt real. The ground beneath his feet, the air he breathed, the distance between objects—all of it behaved exactly as it should.
"That means there is no fixed direction," he said calmly. "No stable sense of distance. No reliable position. Everything is under your control."
He closed his eyes for a brief moment. 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎
Not to escape the illusion.
But to stop relying on it.
Liora’s voice carried a quiet warning. "Closing your eyes will not help you. This domain does not depend on vision alone. It affects all forms of perception."
Aether responded calmly, "I am not abandoning my senses. I am redefining how I use them."
When he opened his eyes again, his focus had shifted.
"Release a controlled heat pulse," he instructed.
The Flame Sovereign Pup obeyed immediately, releasing a steady wave of heat that spread evenly across the domain rather than concentrating in a single direction.
The temperature began to rise.
Slowly.
Gradually.
The stars above flickered almost imperceptibly, and the ground beneath them shifted by the smallest margin.
Liora’s eyes narrowed slightly as she observed the change. "You are not trying to destroy the domain," she said. "You are interfering with its stability."
Aether took a single step forward as he replied, "This domain relies on consistency to maintain its structure. If that consistency is disrupted, even slightly, it will begin to lose its precision."
Another heat pulse followed.
Then another.
Each one subtle, controlled, and deliberate.
The Dream Rabbit flickered for a fraction of a second, its position shifting out of sync with the surrounding space.
The illusion lagged.
Barely noticeable.
But undeniably real.
"You found the weakness," Liora said softly.
Aether did not respond, because he knew this was only the beginning.
The Dream Rabbit moved again, faster and more aggressively than before. The number of overlapping images increased rapidly, filling the space with multiple layers of movement that were nearly impossible to track.
"Now the real challenge begins," Liora said. "From this point onward, it becomes a race. Let us see whether you can maintain your method under pressure."
Aether’s gaze remained steady as he replied, "Then I will not allow it to become a race."
He took another step forward.
"I will end it before it reaches that point."
The Dream Domain remained intact, its layers still complex and dangerous, but small cracks had already begun to form within its structure.
Not through brute force.
Not through overwhelming power.
But through understanding.
And as those cracks slowly widened, the true battle between them was only just beginning.
