Ascension Gates: Rise of the Beast Monarch-Chapter 49: Trial of the Silent Hunter
The chamber was silent.
Aether stood on the glowing platform at the center of the circular room, his figure illuminated by faint golden light rising from beneath his feet. Around him, the walls curved upward into darkness, covered in ancient runes that pulsed slowly with a soft purple glow. The symbols seemed alive, reacting to his presence as though they had awakened from centuries of dormancy.
Beside him, the Flame Sovereign Pup remained alert, its small body tense with readiness. Crimson flames flickered along its fur, burning slightly brighter than before. The light from its fire cast dancing shadows across the stone floor.
Both of them could feel it.
Something was coming.
The ancient trial system had already activated, yet the chamber remained eerily empty. The silence felt unnatural, like the stillness before a storm.
Rumble.
A low vibration spread through the stone floor beneath their feet. The runes carved along the walls suddenly brightened, glowing more intensely as ancient energy flowed through the chamber.
Then the deep voice echoed once more.
"Evaluation Trial."
"Objective: Survive."
"Opponent... released."
The moment the final word faded—
The lights dimmed.
The purple runes flickered weakly before their glow faded into near darkness. Shadows spread across the chamber like creeping smoke.
Aether’s eyes narrowed slightly.
The air had changed.
It felt colder.
Sharper.
Even the Flame Sovereign Pup stiffened, its ears twitching as it scanned the dark chamber.
Something was watching them. But nothing could be seen.
Then—
A faint scratching sound echoed along the stone walls. Something moved through the darkness.
Fast.
Too fast for ordinary sight to follow.
Rylan would have probably shouted in frustration by now, complaining loudly about invisible enemies and unfair trials.
But Aether remained calm. He closed his eyes briefly.
Listening.
Feeling.
The faint movements of air. The subtle vibrations across the floor.
Then—
The attack came. A black blur shot across the chamber like a bolt of lightning.
Aether reacted instantly.
"Crimson Step."
The Flame Sovereign Pup vanished in a flash of fire. A dark claw sliced through the exact spot where the pup had been standing a moment earlier. The attack struck the stone floor.
CRACK.
Deep claw marks tore through the solid rock like it was soft clay. The attacker landed silently on the opposite side of the chamber.
For the first time—
The creature became visible. It resembled a wolf. But its body was not made of flesh.
Instead, it was formed entirely from shifting black shadows. Its shape flickered constantly, like smoke twisting in the wind. Dark strands of shadow drifted from its body before dissolving into the air.
Two glowing violet eyes stared directly at Aether from within the darkness. Those eyes burned with predatory intelligence.
The creature’s claws were long and curved like blades forged from night itself. Its body crouched low to the ground.
Silent.
Waiting.
Ready to strike again. The ancient voice echoed once more.
"Trial Beast: Shadow Fang."
"Speed-Class Guardian."
The beast vanished again. Not by running. But by dissolving into the surrounding shadows. Its body merged with the darkness along the chamber walls.
The Flame Sovereign Pup growled softly. This opponent was different from the previous guardians. It wasn’t just powerful.
It was fast.
Extremely fast.
Aether opened his eyes slowly. His gaze moved calmly across the dark chamber. The shadow beast attacked again.
This time from behind. But the pup reacted instantly.
"Crimson Step."
Flames flashed through the darkness.
The pup reappeared beside the shadow beast mid-attack. Its claws ignited with fire.
It slashed.
The attack struck the creature’s body.
But instead of blood—
The flames passed through drifting shadow. The beast’s body split apart like smoke scattering in the wind. Then the shadows gathered again. Reforming several meters away.
Rumble.
The chamber trembled slightly.
The trial system spoke again.
"Phase Two."
The shadow beast growled deeply. Its body expanded slightly as more shadows gathered around it. Dark energy flowed into its form. Its speed increased.
Aether understood immediately. This trial wasn’t simply testing strength. It was testing reaction.
Awareness.
Adaptability.
And the beast had a major advantage. The darkness of the chamber itself. The shadow beast attacked repeatedly.
Left.
Right.
Behind.
Above.
Each strike came without warning, like flashes of darkness cutting through the air. Its claws sliced through space with terrifying speed.
The Flame Sovereign Pup dodged again and again using Crimson Step. Each movement left bursts of crimson fire flashing across the chamber.
But the attacks never stopped. The beast moved like living darkness, striking from every direction. Even the pup’s movements began slowing slightly after so many rapid teleportations.
Aether continued observing carefully.
The beast’s body was made of shadows. Direct attacks passed through it.
But the glowing violet eyes remained solid. Those eyes were likely the creature’s core.
Destroy them—
And the beast would fall. But hitting something moving this fast required precision beyond normal reaction speed. Then Aether noticed something else.
Each time the shadow beast moved—
The shadows along the chamber walls rippled. Like water disturbed by a stone.
The creature wasn’t simply hiding in darkness. It was connected to it. Drawing power from it.
Aether spoke quietly.
"Light the chamber."
The Flame Sovereign Pup understood immediately. Its flames flared brighter.
"Flame Crown."
The pup leaped high into the air. A blazing ring of crimson fire expanded outward from its body like a rising sun. Brilliant firelight flooded the entire chamber.
Every corner illuminated.
Every shadow exposed.
The darkness along the walls shrank rapidly. The shadow beast recoiled slightly. Its body flickered violently.
For the first time—
Its form became unstable. Aether had just removed its greatest advantage.
The shadow beast roared in anger. Then it attacked again. But its movements were no longer perfect.
Without the darkness feeding its power, its speed dropped slightly. The Flame Sovereign Pup dashed forward. Its blazing flames illuminated the battlefield like a burning star.
The beast lunged. Claws aimed straight for the pup’s throat. But Aether had already predicted the attack.
"Crimson Step."
The pup vanished instantly. It reappeared directly above the shadow beast. Flames gathered around its claws.
The shadow beast tried to retreat into the fading shadows. But the chamber was too bright now. There was nowhere left to hide.
"Flame Strike."
The pup slashed downward. The attack struck the beast’s head. One violet eye shattered instantly.
The shadow beast screamed in pain. Its body flickered violently. Dark smoke burst outward across the chamber. But the creature still lived.
Still dangerous.
The wounded beast lunged one final time. Its remaining eye burned with desperate fury. The pup didn’t dodge.
Instead—
It charged forward.
Fire met shadow.
BOOM.
The explosion illuminated the entire chamber with blinding light. When the flames finally faded—
The shadow beast lay collapsed on the floor. Its remaining eye cracked slowly.
Then shattered.
The creature dissolved completely into fading black mist. The chamber fell silent once again.
The runes along the walls dimmed gradually. The ancient voice returned.
"Trial complete."
"Challenger... passed."
Golden particles of energy appeared across the chamber. They floated slowly through the air before drifting toward Aether. Absorbing into the mysterious golden energy surrounding him. The system paused again.
For a brief moment—
The runes flickered strangely. Almost as if the ancient mechanism was confused. Then the voice spoke again. But this time the tone had changed slightly.
"System anomaly detected."
"Proceeding to next stage."
The stone gate on the far side of the chamber slowly opened with a deep grinding sound.
Beyond it—
A long staircase descended into darkness.
Leading deeper into the ruins.
The Flame Sovereign Pup returned to Aether’s side, its flames burning steadily.
Aether stepped forward toward the staircase.
Without hesitation.
The deeper layers of the ruins were waiting.
Elsewhere in the Labyrinth
Rylan sprinted through a narrow stone corridor.
Behind him—
Three massive insect-like monsters chased him relentlessly.
Their sharp legs scraped loudly against the stone floor as they closed the distance.
His serpent hissed angrily before striking one of them.
Rylan groaned.
"Why do I always get the annoying fights?!"
Clearly, the ruins were testing every challenger in different ways.
And survival was becoming more difficult with every passing moment.
Far away—
Lucien walked calmly through another section of the labyrinth.
His silver wolf padded silently beside him.
The stone floor behind them was stained with fresh blood.
Another challenger had already fallen. If Aether and Rylan were here then they will definitely recognise this person.
He is the same person which they meet at second round. It was black haired man.
After cleaning his dagger, Lucien smiled faintly.
"The numbers are dropping quickly."
As the challenger here die naturally, it was not his fault.
Which meant the final stage of the ruins was approaching.
In the Hidden Chamber. Far beneath the labyrinth...
The mysterious observer watched the floating projections carefully.cAether’s trial had been unusual.
Very unusual. The ruins had reacted strangely to his presence. The ancient systems had nearly malfunctioned.
That had never happened before. The observer leaned slightly forward. Interest had grown deeper. This challenger was changing the trials themselves.
Soon—
The ruins would reach their final stages. And the true secret buried deep within them would finally be revealed.
For now—
The observer continued watching.
Silently.
Patiently.
