Chapter 150: Chapter 149 The Ruined City (4)
Klaus glanced at her before scoffing. "That’s a secret."
Diana scoffed too. "You are trying to brush me off, aren’t you?"
"And what if I am?" he blatantly replied, staring right into her eyes.
"Then, there is nothing I can do about it."
"Let’s talk about you. Why didn’t you come back when you realized that you were under attack?" Klaus asked, his brows furrowed.
Diana sighed. "I don’t know. It was like I was trapped in there, unable to find the exit... And I also noticed a strange power in the plane, but I just can’t figure out what it was."
"You mean you weren’t alone?" He was taken aback by the sudden revelation. If her vision was not safe, then the real world is more dangerous than they had imagined.
Diana shook her head before exhaling deeply. "No, I wasn’t, although I couldn’t see anyone. But there was that aura that surely belonged to someone, and I mean someone powerful."
"Then I’m afraid we are already being followed and watched," he muttered, so only Diana could hear him.
"Exactly my point," Diana replied, her voice dripping with worry. "I hope the others are safe."
.......
Meanwhile, on the other path of the road, Olivia stared at the strange building. She felt like something was amiss. Her nose kept picking up strange scents, and her ears heard weird footsteps.
Thanks to the heightened senses she got from the Bloodfang monster. But still, she couldn’t pinpoint where it was coming from.
"Everything alright?" Alexa’s voice broke her trail of thought. "You look tense," she added, her sharp gaze sweeping over Olivia’s face.
"I think something is wrong. I feel like we are being followed." Olivia did not hesitate to say what she had been noticing. It was crucial for their survival.
"How so?" Alexa probed further. Although she could also feel the uneasy pressure in the air, she wanted to hear Olivia’s reasons and why she thought so.
Olivia bit her lower lip. She was unsure of what Alexa would think of her if she told her about her heightened senses. Of course, she would be questioned on how she was able to acquire them.
"I just have a strange feeling about it," Olivia said, her hand tightening over the hilt of her sword.
Alexa’s gaze lingered on her for a moment longer. She knew Olivia was lying. It seemed like she still had not trusted her fully yet.
"I understand. I believe everyone has that feeling too," Alexa said, her eyes returning to the view ahead of them. Her fingers twitched unconsciously. She would not probe for now.
Olivia nodded, her chest constricting with an unknown feeling. She could sense the different vibe coming from Alexa. It wasn’t necessarily a bad one, but it wasn’t a good one either.
Thinking back to when she had seen Alexa cry, and breaking down in front of her, she wondered if they were the same person. The confidence and authority Alexa was exuding now felt like a completely different side of her from that day.
Olivia turned her attention to Abigail when she heard her voice, she listened to her conversation with Ellie and Liam.
"Do you think any Survivor would live in this kind of place?" came Abigail’s calm voice, although it was dripping with fear and worry. But her eyes didn’t fail to observe every crook and nook in her path.
"If we have to think about this logically, no one would want to live here. But there is no way the academy is wrong with their data," Liam said, folding his arms across his chest. A white bow hung behind his back.
"I can feel something amiss in the air. But what if the survivors couldn’t escape because of the monsters roaming about?" Ellie reasoned.
"Good point. But how come we haven’t seen a single monster in sight? We have been walking for a long time now," Abigail said, glancing around the empty and deserted streets.
Scraps of metal and dirt scattered around the streets, with human bones adding the final touch to the eerie atmosphere.
"Yeah, that is very weird," Liam muttered, his brows furrowing slightly.
Monsters have well-developed senses. They should have already sensed them, and attacked by now, but why were none seen in sight?
Olivia swallowed hard, her throat parched by the tension in the air. Her wandering eyes fell on Lucian, who was walking alone.
Although their first conversation didn’t go well, she didn’t mind trying again. She quickened her pace, walking beside him.
"How are you feeling?" Olivia wanted to facepalm herself as soon as those words left her mouth. The question itself was strange because she wasn’t the type of person who asked those.
Lucian’s eyes flicked towards her, his jaw seemed to clench slightly. His gaze lingered on her for a moment too long.
Olivia felt her chest tighten from the stare she was getting from him. Her fingers fidgeted over her sword.
At that moment, those eyes didn’t hold any of their usual tenderness or care. They were cold, almost like he was irritated by her presence.
Olivia looked away, unable to bear the weight of his gaze. Maybe he had stopped caring for her, she thought to herself.
’Who wouldn’t? I have been ignoring and making things hard for him lately. Why would he continue to care for me?... I really feel like a b**ch right now. If I couldn’t open my walls for him, why should I expect he would welcome me with open hands? Maybe this is for the best. If he is not close to me, then I wouldn’t inflict him with my bad luck. Damn my heart for still caring about what we could have been.’
Olivia felt bile rising in her throat. The feeling of being rejected stung harder than she had thought.
Meanwhile, as she was looking away, Lucian shook his head as if he was trying to clear his mind. When he looked at her again, the warmth in his eyes appeared again.
But Olivia was too engrossed in her emotions to notice it.
Just then, the atmosphere began to change. An oppressive aura stretched across the city.
Then, a whitish, cloud-like smoke covered the city from the sky to the ground, making it impossible to see anything.
