Apocalyptic World: Surviving with my husband and my cute little babies-Chapter 240: Finally awakened
Chapter 240: Finally awakened
Another day had passed, and there was still no sign of Ethan waking up.
So, in the meantime, Elena focused on helping the others store ice and snow in the Southern Inventory Sector, preparing for potential heat waves or extreme temperatures.
As everyone looked at the huge stockpile of ice, they couldn’t help but gasp in awe.
Grandpa Ford then asked, "Elena, do you think this pile is enough?"
"Not enough. I think we should build an ice plantation so we won’t have to worry in the future," Elena suggested.
She was already planning to sell ice at the Paradise Shop, so what they had now wouldn’t be enough.
During the ice age, they had relied on the mini forest for firewood.
So, it made sense to also prepare for extreme heat by building ice-producing plants.
That way, everything they needed would be available within the space.
"Indeed, that’s a good idea. By the way, I haven’t reported the status of the sugar and salt production—it’s working well now," Uncle Anthony added.
He had been busy organizing the operations of the newly built production facility and teaching others how to use it.
Now that Elena had planned for another plantation, he was eager to study its requirements.
"That’s good to hear, Uncle," Elena responded.
She had already checked the status of the facilities inside the space using the Golden Tablet’s [Building] function and saw that everything was running smoothly, so she didn’t ask Uncle Anthony for more details.
"I want to build an ice production plant soon, and I need your expertise, along with Lydia’s, to help me gather blueprints from the library or maybe create a new one," she continued.
"Leave it to me," Uncle Anthony assured her. "I’ll handle the blueprint as soon as possible."
Elena nodded, feeling confident that they could produce it sooner.
With Lydia as an architect and Uncle Anthony as a mechanical engineer, she was certain they could devise a brilliant blueprint.
Things were steadily improving inside the space, and Elena was already planning to add more urgently needed facilities in the upcoming days.
Soon after, the others continued gathering ice and snow on the rooftop, while she returned to their home to rest for a while.
Later that evening, Elena woke up feeling hungry.
She happily munched on some snacks at the mini table in their room while talking softly to her active baby.
But suddenly, she heard her husband mumbling in distress, as if pleading for someone to dodge.
"No... No..." he whispered, tears slipping from the corners of his eyes.
Beads of sweat soon formed on his forehead—he was clearly trapped in a nightmare.
Elena’s heart clenched.
She didn’t dare wake him, fearing it might interrupt the core formation.
Instead, she gently wiped his face, making sure he stayed comfortable.
"Husband, what are you dreaming about that frightens you so much?" she whispered.
But no reply came—only silence.
She let out a quiet sigh, then finished her snack and returned to bed, gently caressing his face in the hopes that he’d find peace in his dreams.
His brows slowly eased under her touch, as if sensing her presence, bringing a faint warmth to her heart.
When morning came, Elena felt someone hugging her tightly. Feeling slightly uncomfortable, she opened her eyes—and there he was.
Ethan was finally awake from his deep slumber, smiling warmly at her.
"Wife, I’m sorry to make you wait. I missed you," he said before leaning in to kiss her lips.
Elena smiled and hugged him back tightly. "It’s alright. I missed you, too. How do you feel now? Any changes?"
"I’m awakened now, and I can feel my strength has grown so much. There’s a core also in my head—it’s black."
"Congratulations, husband! You’re an ability user now."
"Thank you, Wife. How are you and the baby?" he asked, noticing the tiredness under her eyes.
"The baby and I are doing well. It’s just... sometimes it gets naughty and wakes me up at midnight. Maybe it’s protesting because its daddy isn’t the one reading stories."
"Naughty indeed," he chuckled, placing his hand on her belly. "Baby, behave now. Daddy’s finally here."
They both laughed—especially Elena—relieved that her husband had safely awakened.
"Wife, let’s eat. I’m starving."
"Alright, go freshen up while I prepare breakfast," Elena replied as she stood up to change out of her sleepwear.
Ethan watched her with amusement as she began undressing.
Then he grinned and teased, "Do I smell bad? How about helping your husband clean up, hmmm?"
He quickly stood up and helped her change her clothes.
Most of Elena’s outfits were now loose to accommodate her pregnancy, and with her growing belly, nothing really fit quite right anymore.
Elena rolled her eyes in amusement as he tried his best to seduce her into agreeing.
Her husband had become quite the expert at it.
Back then, he was awkward and clueless when it came to teasing—but now, he was a completely different man.
Blame that book, ’How to Make Your Wife Happy 101’.
Ever since he read it, he had totally transformed—not that she was complaining.
She giggled to herself but remembered he had just woken up after seven days of sleep. He must be really starving.
So, she playfully turned him down.
"Husband, you better clean up quickly so you can eat. You’re starving, right? So stop teasing me. Maybe later, we can have a thorough cleaning at the Southern Lake Sector."
She winked at him, which earned a smirk.
"Alright, you promised," he said, giving her another kiss before heading to the bathroom.
Elena watched as he quickly walked to the bathroom, then made her way to the kitchen to prepare a feast for him.
This time, she retrieved ready-made cooked dishes, mostly a generous amount of meat, knowing that ability users needed to eat more to replenish their energy.
Soon, Ethan joined her for breakfast, sitting beside her.
As they ate, Elena began updating him on everything that had happened during his absence.
Hearing her report, he paused mid-bite, looking at her with an expression filled with concern.
"Hailstorm? Is everyone alright?"
"We’re fine. It’s just that our unit got damaged, so we moved. We’re currently staying in Unit 2602."
"Thankfully, you’re safe."
They continued talking about the changes in the building—the residents relocating and the new Paradise branch being set up at the military evacuation center.
Ethan listened carefully, nodding as he devoured dish after dish, clearly too hungry to worry about manners.
"So, what’s your skill?" Elena asked, curious to know if it was the same as in her past life.
"I’m not sure yet. How about I show you later—after I greet everyone? I need to thank them for taking care of you."
"Alright. They really did help me a lot."
Afterward, they focused on finishing their breakfast.
Then, Ethan shifted into caretaker mode for his pregnant wife, reminding her to take her vitamins and even squeezing fresh orange juice for her.
They chatted about trivial matters, with Ethan watching her lovingly as she finished her juice.
However, he suddenly shifted the topic, his gaze fixed intently on her.
"Wife, I had a terrible dream."
Hearing his distressed tone, Elena was immediately intrigued.
"Sigh... You even cried in your sleep. What kind of nightmare was it?"
Ethan’s expression then turned serious. "There was a woman—she was about to be struck by a powerful ability, but a man shielded her and took the hit. He died."
Elena froze.
The glass of fresh orange juice she was holding slipped from her hands and shattered on the floor.
Ethan quickly stood and rushed to her side, gently guiding her away from the broken shards.
"Wife, be careful. What’s wrong? Why did you suddenly go pale?"
Elena forced herself to stay calm and came up with an excuse.
"The baby kicked—hard. It startled me. That’s why the glass slipped. Don’t worry, I’ll clean it up."
With a wave of her hand, she made the orange juice and glass vanish, effortlessly utilizing her Golden Tablet ability.
Trying to steady herself, she asked, "What happened next in your dream?"
Ethan could sense something was off. She seemed unsettled, as if hiding something.
He gently held her hand and led her to sit on the sofa, then continued.
"It started on a battlefield. A man and a woman almost defeated a bizarre creature with long limbs, a huge face, and countless eyes. Just when victory seemed within reach, their own allies betrayed them. The man died protecting the woman, and she cried so hard that it was unbearable to watch. Then, she vanished—just disappeared, leaving his body behind."
He looked at her, gauging her expression. Her eyes glistened with unshed tears, and guilt flickered across her face.
He pressed on, "I couldn’t understand. Why did she leave? Why did she vanish like that?"
"Stop—" Elena suddenly interrupted, her voice tight, clearly unwilling to hear any more.
Tears streamed down her cheeks as those sorrowful memories rushed back, overwhelming her.
Her past life, filled with regrets—no, it should be their past life, full of sorrow.
