Apocalyptic Rebirth: With a repairman system space, she rises again.-Chapter 646: Reapairman assembly.
The monthly repairmen assembly took longer than usual to start. Rows of seats filled slowly as repairmen trickled into the hall, talking among themselves, complaining quietly, or simply waiting in bored silence.
The air buzzed with low conversations and the faint mechanical hum that always lingered in the building.
Sunshine sat in the back row, relaxed in her chair.
In her hands was a small pile of wild fruits Hrynn had sent her as a thank you for looking out for their family.
They were strange looking things_ small purple berries with golden specks, long green pods that snapped open with a crisp sound, and bright orange fruits shaped like tiny lanterns. Their smell alone was sweet enough to make anyone curious.
Sunshine popped one of the berries into her mouth and smiled.
"They’re really good," she said. Never did she think that she would receive fruits from an insect! The world had truly become crazy.
Nine sat beside her, half sitting and half hovering in the air as usual. It was like he could not decide what position he wanted to be in. His eyes were also rotating too actively, watching everyone in attendance as if he had been assigned as the hall master.
"Of course they are good," he said proudly. "Hrynn grows the best fruits in our world."
Sunshine was surprised. "I thought they are wild.... grown in a bush or forest." Insectoids could garden! Now, she was tempted to pay a trip to Nine’s world and take a look.
"My wife picked them, so it is the same thing." Nine answered fast.
Sunshine smiled. "Tell her I love them and thank her for me." It was no use arguing with Nine over the difference between picking fruit and growing it. The insectoid was obsessed with his wife, everything she did was perfect.
It was cute.
Nine brightened immediately. "You can thank her yourself."
Sunshine glanced at him_ curious. Was he going to contact her over the phone and let them speak?
Nine leaned closer with excitement. "I am inviting you to my world."
Sunshine laughed softly. "You invite people very easily. I could be a spy or something."
"Actually, not everyone gets the invitation, you are different." He told her.
"Really?"
"Yes," he said proudly. "I only invite guests I like, and you are my sister so it’s time to meet the family."
Sunshine shook her head, amused. "Well, I would like to visit someday," she said. "I should thank Hrynn for the fruits properly. Tell me what she likes so that I put a smile on her face."
Nine nodded enthusiastically. "She will like that. You can bring my brother- in -law with you too."
Sunshine looked down at the nearly empty pile and quickly pushed the remaining fruits closer to herself. "And the kids too."
Nine nodded vehemently. Just then his sharp eyes caught movement. He jutted his chin toward a tall figure walking past the aisle towards the exit.
"Speaking of thanking people," Nine said, lowering his voice slightly. "We never thanked Vortan for having our backs about the Glacian issue."
Sunshine followed his gaze.
Supervisor Vortan was exiting through the door, walking with his usual stiff posture.
Sunshine nodded. "You’re right." She quickly moved the remaining fruits into her space and stood. "Come on."
They stepped forward to intercept him.
Nine flew ahead and stopped directly in front of Vortan, blocking his path. "Supervisor Vortan, a word."
Vortan stopped immediately and frowned down at them. "What have you two done this time?"
Sunshine and Nine shook their heads at the same time.
"Nothing, why do you think we did something wrong?" Sunshine asked.
He arched his brows. He did not even need to say it out loud and they both knew this.
"We actually came to thank you," Nine laughed nervously.
"For having our backs during the trial," Sunshine finished.
The moment the words left her mouth, Vortan’s expression changed. He looked around sharply.
"Shhh! Shut it," he hissed, glancing left and right, scanning for anyone close enough to hear. Then he leaned closer. "I did not help you," he said quietly.
Sunshine blinked. "But_"
"I helped myself," Vortan interrupted. He folded his arms. "If that situation had gone differently, I would have been dragged into the investigation too. That would have been a disaster."
Nine scratched his chin. "So you were protecting yourself."
"Exactly," Vortan said firmly. Then his eyes narrowed. "And listen carefully_ never bring up that incident again."
Sunshine nodded quickly. "Yes, Supervisor."
Nine gave a small salute. "Not a word."
Vortan looked at both of them for another moment before scoffing and walking away. He just had a feeling that this was not the end of their trouble making days. Lucky for them, they had a strong backer.
Just then the summoning bell rang through the hall_ one announcing that the assembly was starting. Repairmen outside immediately began moving toward the assembly chamber. Every seat quickly filled.
This was the only time Commander Melvin addressed all repairmen together, so attendance was mandatory. Usually he appeared relaxed_ sometimes even smiling.
Today he was not smiling. His expression was tight and serious as he stood at the front.
"I will be brief," he began.
The room grew quiet.
"There has been an increase in mistakes at work."
A murmur spread across the hall.
Commander Melvin continued. "These mistakes are costly. Extremely costly."
He placed both hands on the podium. "From this moment forward, any repairman responsible for such errors will personally bear the cost."
Gasps erupted across the hall. Some repairmen whispered nervously. Others looked horrified. Commander Melvin ignored the reactions.
After a moment, Zevran stepped forward.
She pulled her veil and looked across the room sharply. "The increase in mistakes," she said coldly, "comes from foolish repairmen who think they are smarter than the rules." Her gaze slowly swept across the crowd. "Repairmen who go off book. Repairmen who think ’thinking outside the box’ makes them brilliant." Her eyes stopped on Sunshine.
"And in my opinion," Zevran continued, "the main problem is a certain immature repairman who somehow sneaked her way into this organization."
Every head in the room turned. All eyes landed on Sunshine.
For a moment the hall was completely silent.
Then, Sunshine simply raised her hand and waved proudly. "Hi, my name is Sunshine Raine, granddaughter of Maximus Raine and I am an out of the box thinker who happens to be brilliant. It’s in the blood, blame my good DNA. Anyway, I am happy to meet you all."
A few repairmen choked back laughter.
Others looked shocked.
Someone actually burst into loud, brave, laughter.
