Chapter 61: Different Mutated Humans

The five mutated humans sprinted through the mist. Their guttural shriek scraped against all of the survivors’ nerves

But Myles, Nadine, and Victor held their ground at the front. Those who were in the back gathering rocks don’t need to be too worried.

Myles’s black short sword gleamed in the warped light and the red veins along its blade pulsing. He stepped forward first. His movements were sharper and faster than what any normal human could accomplish before the apocalypse.

His eyes locked onto the first monster.

The mutated human swung its shard-ridden arm like a club but Myles slipped past it in one smooth motion. His sword cut upward, slicing through its chest with little resistance.

The creature staggered, green light spilling from the wound before it collapsed.

Myles pivoted immediately, his second slash carving cleanly across the throat of another rushing mutant.

Both bodies hit the ground before the others even closed in.

Nadine moved next. Her makeshift spear wasn’t elegant or very sharp but she wielded it with steady hands and sharp precision.

She thrust it forward as a mutant lunged at her and the tip of the spear punched through its chest.

The jagged glow in its torso cracked and dimmed as it let out a garbled hiss, then crumpled lifelessly at her feet.

On the other side, Victor met his two opponents head-on. He wanted to try his new skills now so he activated it.

The power of his Stonehide skill hardened his skin dulling the force of the first mutant’s wild swing.

He blocked with his forearm then slashed his large kitchen knife across its neck in a brutal arc.

The blade wasn’t made for battle, but in Victor’s strengthened grip, it tore through flesh and crystal with ease.

The creature went down twitching.

The second came at him immediately, clawing with shard-covered fingers.

Victor didn’t bother to dodge too far. He ducked low and rammed his shoulder into its gut, and slammed it against the warped wall.

The impact cracked the mutated body, and with a grunt, Victor drove his knife into its skull. The green glow in its eyes went dark.

They all received the same amount of EXP from the monsters they killed outside.

Silence fell for a moment. Five corpses lay sprawled on the warped floor, their crystal growths faintly glowing as if leaking the last of their energy.

The three survivors exchanged glances, breathing steady.

They had grown stronger since gaining levels both physically and mentally. Killing these creatures felt far too easy compared to the terror of their first battles.

But the victory was short-lived.

The mist stirred again. Louder footsteps echoed from the depths of the tunnel. Shapes began to emerge one after another, their numbers multiplying.

More mutated humans—dozens of them—shuffled forward.

Their glowing shards marked them clearly. At this point they all guess that these were most likely remnants of what had once been commuters, workers, and wanderers in this very subway station when the apocalypse first struck.

Now they were nothing more than monsters, cursed to prowl this Rift.

Myles’s grip on his sword tightened.

"I want to end their suffering quickly," Nadine said as her eyes lingered on the horde pushing through the mist.

A faint sadness rested in her expression even as her grip on the spear tightened.

Victor nodded once with a firm jaw. "Yes. We should do that."

Myles glanced toward the group still crouched at the back, carefully prying Ether Shards from the ground.

His head tilted slightly in their direction. "They’re weak. Let’s let the others kill them too."

Nadine and Victor exchanged quick glances, then both gave a sharp nod of agreement.

Together, the three of them retreated from the front line, stepping back toward their companions.

The sound of approaching footsteps grew louder behind the mist, but none of them faltered.

"Ryan, Kade, George, Daniel, Sam, Ethan, Clara," Myles called out firmly, his calm tone carrying authority. "The monsters coming now are still weak. You can handle them. It’s your turn."

The group froze for a heartbeat, eyes flicking between each other and the mist where shadowy figures shuffled closer.

Then resolve settled over them. They tightened their grips on makeshift weapons and stood ready. If Myles said that the monsters were weak then they can act now.

Nadine, Victor, and Myles stepped aside, leaving the front line open.

They moved to the back side where Ether Shards glimmered faintly from cracks and surfaces and began to gather them with steady hands.

Ryan and the others shifted their stance, facing the mutated humans with grim determination.

The mist roiled, and the next wave of monsters finally came into clear view.

The mutated humans rushed forward with snarls and flailing limbs but their movements were sluggish compared to the sharpened senses and improved strength of the survivors.

Ryan was the first to land a solid blow. His metal pipe smashed into a mutant’s skull, sending it sprawling.

George and Kade followed, working together to kill another.

Daniel and Sam pressed their advantage with their makeshift weapons, stabbing and hacking until their targets stopped twitching.

Even Ethan, though pale with nerves, swung his weapon with enough force to drop a shrieking mutant.

Clara, who had always lingered behind and waited for opportunity, finally pushed forward.

Her sharpened metal rod punched cleanly into a creature’s chest, her breath was ragged but as she saw the green glow in the monster’s body faded.

Minutes passed in a blur of attack and killing. Each mutant fell one after another until the tunnel floor was littered with shattered crystals and broken bodies.

By the time the last monster collapsed, the survivors stood panting without anyone getting hurt.

A familiar warmth pulsed within their bodies. System notifications showing that each one of them had leveled up twice.

Without hesitation, they poured their new stat points into their bodies.

Meanwhile at the back, Myles, Nadine, and Victor had finished prying Ether Shards from the mutated station.

The glowing fragments filled their packs, but there was still space left. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖

Myles checked his own bag, then glanced into the mist where the tunnel stretched deeper.

"We can still carry more," he said. "Let’s move a little deeper."

Nadine and Victor gave silent nods. The group gathered themselves, and together they prepared to push further into the Rift.
