"Let’s just look around. If there is nothing to take then so be it." Chu Miao said as she moved to open a cabinet door at the top of a shelf.

The rats didn’t seem to have gotten that high.

Luckily, even though many things had been ruined, there were still several packets of flour, sugar, custard, dried fruits, and nuts.

In another cabinet, Ye Xuan found two-liter bottles of sunflower oil, ghee, and flavourings.

They packed everything in their backpacks until they were bulging before stopping.

Chu Miao then walked towards a locked door next to the full size fridge, while Ye Xuan was inspecting the ingredients in the fridge.

"Most of the things in the fridge are half-finished products. They need to be put in the oven before consumption. I think we should leave them for other survivors who might find them useful.

Since there is still power running, these things might stay good for a while longer." Ye Xuan said after going through most of the things in the fridge.

"That’s good. There is always someone who would appreciate them. Come over here. There is a store room with quite a bit of supplies.

Should we load some into the car?" Chu Miao replied and called out to Ye Xuan to determine what to do with the supplies in the store room.

Ye Xuan walked over and stood next to her looking into the small room of about twenty square meters.

There were five sacks of flour, five twenty-liter gallons of oil, two sacks of sugar weighing fifty kilograms, three buckets of ghee, several boxes of dried fruits, canned fruit, and other ingredients used in baking and making desserts.

"Let’s take the larger packages and leave the rest for others." Ye Xuan said.

"Okay, let’s get started then."

It took the two thirty minutes to carry all the things they wanted to take and move them to the car.

By the time they were done and sitting in the car ready to leave, it was already 4.00 am and the sky in the horizon was already tinted with an orange glow.

Due to the changes in weather, the sun would rise earlier than before and only set at 7.00 o’clock in the evening.

It was unbearable, but people had no choice but to accept reality.

"Let’s go home. The sun is about to rise and bring with it the heat that could cook a person." Chu Miao urged as Ye Xuan was the one driving.

Ye Xuan looked at her, but seeing that she was not moving, edged towards her and fastened her safety belt.

When he was straightening up he saw a flash of red on the girl’s cheeks and smiled to himself.

It’s good that she could be affected by his presence. He thought.

Chu Miao was both embarrassed and exasperated because she didn’t think there was a need for the safety belt, but obviously Ye Xuan was used to following the rules and thought it was necessary.

She could feel her heart race when he got close to her and smelled the unique pine scent on him.

She wondered how he still had that scent instead of smelling of sweat after fighting the whole night.

Her mind wandered off with scrambled thoughts and she had to lower the window of the car to inhale some air before calming down.

The trip back home was quiet with everyone trapped in their own thoughts.

When they got to their building, there were still people sitting outside.

Two of which were among the women who were morally trying to kidnap Chu Miao and force her to bring them supplies.

When their car stopped, Chu Miao could see them stretching their necks as if to determine if they had brought the supplies for them.

Ye Xuan was the first to get out of the car and when Chu Miao was about to open her door, he stopped her.

"Wait a moment, Gu Fan and the others will be down in a minute. You can get down then. They will help to carry the supplies." He said to her as he stood outside the door of the car on the side where she was seated.

Chu Miao felt a warm feeling spread through her heart. Even though she was not afraid of those women, she still felt happy to be protected by someone other than her family.

It was a foreign feeling, but it felt good. So, she sat back down and waited for the other men to come down.

"Okay. Thank you." She still thanked Ye Xuan politely.

"No need for thanks. It’s what I should do." Ye Xuan replied.

Of course, Chu Miao knew that he was not obligated to protect her, but he did it anyway, which made her look at him in a more positive light.

Others might see her as a strong woman who can fight hundreds of zombies alone and not care about something as trivial as a quarrel with those women, but he didn’t take anything lightly no matter how insignificant it seemed.

That was what touched her heart.
