Chapter 78: Chapter 78: Encountering More Mutated Rats

The two companions walked across the road to the other side where the cafe was located. They pried open the lock of the shutter door easily and walked in cautiously.

Fortunately, there were no zombies inside. They lowered the shutter door again and found the switch for the lights. Due to the high temperatures, power had already been cut off in this area because it was the least populated, but the cafe had a backup generator that could be heard running with a soft hum.

The lights came on and the two could see everything around the cafe. The floor was a mess with spilled coffee and desserts.

There were also broken plates and cups on the floor.

When the two entered the kitchen, the mess was even worse with spilled cake batter, flour, milk that was already dry and peeling off the floor, and even smashed eggs.

But what made them stop in their tracks was the five pairs of red eyes staring at them as if they were prey.

Apart from that time when Chu Hao had hit a mutated rat with a car, this was the first time Chu Miao had seen a mutated rat.

But it was obvious that this rat was different from the one hit by a car.

It was bigger because while the one before was the size of a cat, these rats were the size of adult rabbits.

Moreover, they had sharp claws protruding from their paws looking like wild animals. If a timid person came face-to-face with these abominations, they would be scared enough to faint.

Luckily, both Chu Miao and Ye Xuan were not timid people.

Looking at this sight, Chu Miao realized that the number of mutated rats in the city were increasing. Before, it would have been a lucky bet if you came across a single mutated rat, but in this kitchen, there were five at the same time.

"Looks like this city will eventually be overrun by rats. The ones we come across must be the hungry ones looking for food. What about those that don’t leave their nest?" Chu Miao asked as she grabbed her sword and moved to attack the rat at the forefront.

Ye Xuan did the same and swung his sword at another rat. As expected, the rats were even faster than the zombies they had killed outside.

Not only were they agile, but they also counterattacked with their claws. Their agility was understandable as they were not zombie rats, but rats that were alive and had mutated.

They were ten times faster than normal rats and if Chu Miao and Ye Xuan had not been at the second level of super power, they would be no match for these few rats.

Fighting in the kitchen was very limiting as there was not enough space to move around.

It was especially challenging because the rats would run under the counter or on top of it and try to swipe their claws at the necks of the two humans.

It took the two fifteen minutes to kill all five of the rats. But the kitchen that had been messy was even worse. There was not a single clean spot to stand in the entire kitchen.

So, Chu Miao and Ye Xuan didn’t care where they were stepping and used their swords to pry open the heads of the rats.

They found a crystal core in every one of them.

"The rats are evolving a lot faster than I expected. Last time the three rats attacked us, we only got one crystal core. But now, every rat had it.

We should probably find their nest and get rid of them before they multiply further." Ye Xuan said as took the crystal cores he had extracted and offered them to Chu Miao.

"Your suggestion is good, it’s just that it won’t be easy to determine the location of their nest. Why are you giving me all the crystal cores? We worked together to kill the rats, you should take your share." Chu Miao was already holding three crystal cores and didn’t plan on taking everything.

So, she rejected Ye Xuan’s offer.

"It’s okay. Even though I can use them to cultivate, a part of them would probably be wasted. So, instead of wasting resources, it’s better to give them to you so that you can put them to good use." He argued as he shoved the two crystal cores into Chu Miao’s hands.

"But it’s unfair to you. You also killed the rats. If I take all the spoils of war then I’ll feel bad." She didn’t want to take advantage of him.

It was true that the crystal cores from mutated animals are different from those extracted from zombies and those who are not cultivating spiritual power would not utilize them completely.

But it still didn’t feel right to take everything.

"How about you give me advice if I get stuck in my cultivation. The knowledge of how to improve is more important than a few crystal cores." Ye Xuan suggested.

He could tell that she would not be at ease if she didn’t exchange anything for the crystal cores.

It was really rare to find a girl who didn’t try to take advantage of him in any way even when she had the opportunity and he was willing to let her do it.

Such character was worthy of respect.

"Okay, if you have a problem in the future, just let me know and I will guide you as much as I can." Chu Miao agreed immediately when she heard his request.

Guiding him in cultivation was a piece of cake for her and didn’t require any effort.

What she didn’t know was that she had walked into the trap of a wolf.

Ye Xuan would use this promise to shorten the distance between them and eventually snag her.

She was just blissfully ignorant at the moment.

"Mmm..." Ye Xuan hummed while fighting to keep the smile that threatened to surface abay. It would be bad if the girl realized that she had made a losing deal and fallen into his trap.

"Let’s see what’s in this kitchen. The rats seem to have camped here for a while." He suggested immediately diverting attention to the situation in the kitchen.

Chu Miao looked around and realized that there was spilled rice, sugar, and even dried fruits on the floor.

It was obvious from the packages littered everywhere that this was not done by humans.
