Chapter 36: Chapter 36 Defense Plan

Alexander stared at her, his mind wandering in deep thoughts.

He wasn’t certain if the right thing to do was to believe her. The Wayne Corp had existed for two generations now, it wasn’t something he could easily let go of.

However, he wanted to believe her.

"Come, I’ll drive you home." He said, walking away without giving Ling Xuan any chance to dispute his words.

Ling Xuan stared at his behind, before following after her. Her gaze scanned the surroundings of the valley.

The valley had a natural defence of high rocks on both sides, stretching further around its perimeter. Although they were aware it had two entrances, they had only seen one, which the guards patrolled.

The other entrance was at the back of the valley; they hadn’t been able to explore it yet because of the bushes covering its entrance.

Ling Xuan believed that they could build walls at the higher ground further away from the entry of the valley, to be able to spot enemies easily and defend it.

She got inside the car, and her eyes briefly glanced at Alexander.

"What is your decision?" Ling Xuan asked.

Alexander ran his finger through his hair. "I don’t know Laurel..." He said a little tired. "You know what, I will do half of what you say. If more things happen as you said they would, then I’ll give you everything you need for us to survive." He paused.

"So what are the things we are going to need?" He asked.

"Defense. As you can see... this valley needs protection."

Alexander followed her gaze.

The rocks around the valley weren’t just tall, they were huge. They surrounded the place like a giant wall. From far away it looked peaceful, but up close it felt like the valley was trapped inside them.

The cliffs were steep, with sharp edges and barely any easy spots to climb. If someone tried to climb down from the top, they’d have to move extremely slowly and with well-advanced tools, because it was very steep and smooth, and anyone inside the valley would be able to see them.

And that was the good part.

Alexander specialized in aerospace engineering, and it was the major business branch of the Wayne Corp.

He could see why the place was worth protecting, but still, the place didn’t offer enough high platforms to easily spot enemies. However, it could be easily solved by cameras and drones.

"Alright. I’ll fund the construction plan, and I can also make suggestions for you... If you want." He said, his tone not fully convinced that any of these made sense.

"Good. For the walls, it should be 10 metres high, and 3-5 meters thick. If possible, I want a double wall, with little space in between, where weapons can easily shoot out from. The wall must be very steep and slippery, impossible to climb. And in case, someone was about to stack over each other to climb it, I want a rotating blade from the space within the walls to be able to slice through them.

And on top of the walls, there must be spikes just in case the enemies managed to go through our defences. And towers must be built on the walls along every hidden spot. I want to be heavily fortified." Ling Xuan said.

Alexander’s jaw fell, at how accurate her knowledge about the fortress was. "Sure, but that is not something we can achieve quickly as it needs time and planning, but we can start with a single wall, as it’s the most important thing right now.

As for the double wall, that is more of a long-term project, wait... You are not trying to make the second wall of China right?" He said lightly.

But it only made Ling Xuan give him a death stare.

"Fine, I’ll send someone to survey the land tomorrow. Then we can start building after talking to the mayor of the city, because a big construction like that will certainly draw attention."

Ling Xuan nodded. "Fine, we can add more things to it tomorrow."

"Sure."

Alexander drove out of the narrow bumpy road, he kept glancing at Ling Xuan. He wondered how he didn’t notice his wife was more than the docile vixen he thought she was.

Not only was she strategic, she knew what she wanted, and how to get it.

Ling Xuan felt there was nothing more for them to say, and besides she didn’t want to spend her time with him.

"Laurel, switch with me." Ling Xuan inside her head.

"Okay," Laurel replied.

After they had switched, Laurel gently fumbled her hand. She glanced at Alexander, the man she could only watch from afar.

Sitting next to him, made her feel inexplicable feelings, with hatred.

She could still remember the hate and disappointment in his eyes when he ordered them to throw her to the monsters.

She sighed, reminding herself that she should only focus on what she needed from him.

"And not only the walls, if we are going to make the place liveable for our family, then we need to build a house," Laurel said calmly.

Alexander nodded, taking a note in his head. His head snapped back to Laurel with suspicion, he swore seconds ago that Laurel was cold and had a deadly aura, how come she looks like a soft petal now?

"And since we are going to have the family along." Her voice lowered, she didn’t want to live with his family. They always bring problems to her, one way or the other. "We should get more clothes, shoes, water, and food." She said.

She didn’t want Alexander to know she had stockpiled a lot of the supplies, else he would grow suspicious and ask where the supplies were.

"Sure," Alexander answered. He paused for a second, before glancing at her again. "So... I must be the only one you told, right?" He asked with a spark in his gaze.

He just wanted to feel the excitement of being the number in her list.

Laurel glanced out of the window. "What a beautiful day." She lowered the window glass, sticking her head out of the car slightly, inhaling the fresh air.

Alexander’s smile disappeared. She was ignoring him... could it be she had told someone else before him? His eyes darkened like a storm ready to fall.

.....

It was the second day of the extreme heat. The temperature had risen drastically to 30 degrees Celsius. Small news reports about the unnatural heat condition had started circulating on the radio, TV, magazines, and newspapers. 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞

For a country whose temperature never exceeded 25 degrees in the summer, 30 degrees was already too much.

A few people had already started fainting from heatstroke and were being rushed to the hospitals. Ice packs are placed on some teenagers’ bodies as they are rushed to the nearest hospital.

"Luxebridge City is now facing a challenge it has never imagined encountering until now. The temperature currently is 31 degrees Celsius... oh... it is 32 degrees now, and still rising. Scientists believe it is caused by the ozone layer depletion." The female reporter said as she fanned herself, sweat dripping down her temple.

"There have been 20 people who are being rushed to the hospital due to heatstroke. The Mayor had given advice for everyone to stay indoors, and cool down with the air conditioner. Citizens are asked to take a lot of water..."

The mic dropped from the reporter’s hand as she suddenly collapsed to the ground. The TV glitched as the station went off.

Chris took the remote, turning the TV off. His brows furrowed slightly. It was time to take the next step.
