Chapter 35: Chapter 35 It’s Going to Get Worse

"Husband?" Ling Xuan arched her brows, already displeased by the news.

She carried the sickle, heading towards the entrance of the warehouse.

Her brows creased the moment her eyes landed on Alexander.

"How did he find us?" Laurel muttered in her head.

Ling Xuan’s fingers tightened around the sickle.

Alexander was frustrated by the guard who refused to let him in. However, the moment his eyes landed on her, his brows knitted in concern.

His wife... the young Madam of the Wayne family...was really doing farm work in this shabby place.

Alexander took a step forward. "Laurel."

Ling Xuan didn’t reply. She simply stared at him for a few seconds, her eyes cold and unreadable, then she glanced at the guard standing beside the gate.

"You can leave," she said calmly.

Nate hesitated, then nodded. "Yes, ma’am."

When the guard walked away, the tension between them suddenly felt too tense.

Alexander’s gaze dropped to the sickle in her hand, then to the dirt on her sleeves, and the sweat that clung to her skin.

His chest tightened.

"I asked them to follow you," he admitted, his voice low, like he didn’t want to say it too loudly. "I thought you were meeting someone. I didn’t expect... this."

Ling Xuan’s lips curved slightly, but there was no warmth in them. "So you sent spies."

Alexander’s jaw clenched. "I’m your husband."

"So what?" Ling Xuan replied flatly.

Alexander inhaled slowly, trying to control his temper. "Why are you doing this? Why are you farming? Are you trying to humiliate the Wayne family?"

Ling Xuan stared at him like he was asking the dumbest question in the world.

"Humiliate?" she repeated, then she glanced back at the warehouse behind her. "Do you even know what humiliation looks like?"

Alexander followed her gaze, and that was when he noticed the warehouse, the heavy locks on the doors, and the way the guards stood fiercely, guarding whatever was behind the closed doors.

Alexander knew this was bigger than staged acting, which he had earlier thought it was. He believed Laurel was doing all of these to gain his attention. Yet again, he was wrong.

And the location of the place was extremely difficult to find, he had been keeping a tab on her since the first day he noticed she was farming.

With his well-connected influence, he had to rely on external help to find the place.

Alexander’s voice lowered. "What is going on, Laurel?"

Ling Xuan didn’t answer immediately. She took a step closer, stopping right in front of him.

"You always like control," she said calmly. "You like knowing what people are doing, where they are going, who they are meeting. You don’t like surprises."

Alexander’s brows furrowed. "What are you trying to say?"

Ling Xuan held his gaze. "I’m saying that you can’t always control everything, especially not me."

Her tone didn’t change, but every word landed clearly.

"Since you badly want to know, in a few weeks, this world will be no more."

"Ling Xuan, I thought you said we are not going to tell him." Laurel’s voice echoed in her head.

"Trust me, Laurel. We need all the funds we can get." Ling Xuan replied.

Yes... The funds and manpower she needed to take over the world after everything was destroyed. Alexander was her perfect prey.

Alexander froze. The atmosphere became tense again. 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺

"Laurel..." he called her name again, more carefully this time, like he didn’t want to trigger her anger.

But Ling Xuan’s face remained cold.

"You won’t believe me," she continued. "You will think I’m crazy, or acting, or trying to play mind games. That is fine, I don’t care what you think."

Alexander swallowed. "What are you talking about?"

Ling Xuan lifted the sickle slightly, then pointed it toward the cleared farmland.

"If I were you I would start stockpiling and selling all the property I have."

Alexander’s eyes narrowed. "Why should I listen to you?"

Ling Xuan’s gaze didn’t waver. "Because you’re a businessman, and you love insurance. This is the biggest insurance you’ll ever buy, and besides you have one big family, you don’t want them to die one after the other before your eyes."

Alexander stared at her like he was trying to find the crack in her expression, the place where she would laugh and admit it was a joke.

But she didn’t.

Instead, she leaned closer and lowered her voice. "I’m not telling you this because I care about you or your family."

Laurel’s heart squeezed in her chest.

Ling Xuan continued calmly, her voice sharp like a blade.

"I’m telling you because you have resources, manpower, and money. If you start preparing now, you will have nothing to worry about when the disaster comes."

Alexander’s fingers curled into his palm. "My resources?"

Ling Xuan nodded slightly. "Yes."

Alexander’s eyes widened slightly. He didn’t understand why... but his mind was already picturing it.

The Wayne family could build anything within days, if he gave the order. He had built hotels faster than normal people built houses.

And Laurel was standing here, telling him all his efforts over these years would become nothing but a waste.

Alexander’s voice went lower. "Is this why you’ve been buying in bulk?"

Ling Xuan didn’t deny it. "Yes."

Alexander’s gaze sharpened. "And you are not going to say the sudden heatwave is a sign that a disaster is coming, right?"

Ling Xuan’s expression stayed calm. "The heat is only the beginning."

Alexander took a slow breath.

Laurel’s voice rang out anxiously in Ling Xuan’s head. "Sister Ling Xuan, don’t tell him too much..."

"I won’t... I’m only letting him know what I want him to," Ling Xuan replied inwardly.

Then she looked at Alexander again and said calmly, "If you want proof, watch the news for the next few days. It’s going to get worse."

Alexander stared at her, his heart beating harder than it should. He didn’t want to believe her, but he couldn’t ignore her either.

Because even if she was lying... the look in her eyes wasn’t the look of a woman playing games.

It was the look of a woman who had already survived something terrible once before.
