Apocalypse: Reborn with a Soul Sync Farming Space System-Chapter 179 Backlash
Laurel’s brows drew together slightly as her hand remained pressed against the ice, her breathing turning uneven as the warmth she had felt a moment ago was gradually replaced by a biting cold that seeped into her skin and spread deeper into her body, as if something was being pulled out from the frozen body and forced into hers.
Her fingers began to tremble as a sharp gasp escaped her lips, her shoulders tensing as her face twisted in pain while the frost on Alexander’s body slowly began to thin, the layers cracking and loosening as the ice weakened under her touch.
The cold did not remain on the surface, they all moved inside her like an invasive force.
Laurel’s lips parted slightly as another breath hitched in her throat, her body beginning to shiver as the chill spread through her veins, her instincts urging her to pull back, to stop before it became too much, yet she did not move her hand away.
Luo clasped its hands together in worry. "Master Laurel, are you alright? You should stop... don’t hurt yourself."
Instead, her fingers tightened. "I’m fine," she said under her breath, though her voice was strained and uneven.
Ling Xuan’s eyes narrowed slightly as she observed her, but she did not step in or interrupt, her gaze steady as she watched the frost continue to break apart.
The ice continued to crack. Slowly and painfully.
Laurel’s knees bent slightly as her strength began to waver, her body swaying as the cold intensified, yet she forced herself to remain standing, her focus unwavering as she endured the freezing sensation that continued to spread through her.
"I’m not letting him die," she murmured, her voice low but firm despite the tremor in it.
The final layer of ice cracked before seeping into her fingers and into her body.
Laurel’s hand slipped away as the last of the frost left Alexander’s body, her balance faltering as she stumbled back, her legs weakening beneath her as she struggled to steady herself.
Alexander inhaled sharply, the sudden rush of warm air filling his lungs as his eyes snapped open, his gaze unfocused and disoriented as he tried to understand where he was.
"Laurel," he called weakly, his voice hoarse as he attempted to take a step forward.
Before he could move further, Ling Xuan stepped forward without hesitation, the baseball bat in her hand moving in a swift and controlled motion as she struck the back of his neck.
Alexander’s body stiffened briefly before collapsing to the ground, unconscious.
Luo paused mid-air, its gaze shifting between them as it spoke in a flat tone.
"That will leave a nasty mark on him."
Laurel blinked in shock as she forced herself to remain upright, her breathing still uneven as she looked at Ling Xuan, her brows furrowing with frustration despite the weakness in her body.
"What was that for?" she asked, her voice carrying both exhaustion and irritation.
Ling Xuan lowered the bat casually, her expression unchanged as she glanced at the unconscious figure on the ground.
"The space system must remain a secret," she said calmly, as if her actions required no further explanation.
Laurel let out a quiet sigh, her shoulders dropping slightly as she resisted the urge to argue further, knowing that there was no time to dwell on it.
"Next time, be gentle," she muttered, though her voice lacked its usual strength.
Her gaze shifted toward Chris, and her expression softened almost immediately as she steadied herself and moved toward him, her steps slower this time as the cold within her body had not subsided, her hands still trembling slightly as she reached out.
She placed her hand against the ice covering him, and the moment she made contact, the same sensation returned, colder and sharper than before as the frost began to transfer once again.
Laurel inhaled sharply as thin layers of frost formed briefly over her skin before fading, her body shivering as she endured the cold, yet she did not pull away.
She continued. Her fingers tightened as the ice began to crack and thin, her breathing growing more uneven as the freezing sensation spread further into her body, yet her focus remained fixed on removing every last layer.
’It would be sad if you die before I find a cure for your illness. I promised to keep you alive for a year, until it is time nothing can happen to you.’ she thought inwardly, motivating herself to hold on.
The frost around Chris’s body slowly disappeared, the final layer disappearing from his skin.
"Ahh," Laurel grunted as she felt every organ inside her was frozen, and even breathing had become more difficult.
Laurel’s hand slipped away as her strength finally gave out, her body collapsing to the ground as she curled slightly, her arms wrapping around herself as uncontrollable shivers ran through her.
Chris drew in a sharp breath as his body jerked slightly, his eyes opening slowly as confusion filled his gaze while he struggled to make sense of his surroundings. All he could make out was a huge hall.
Before he could speak, Ling Xuan moved again, her actions swift and precise as she struck the back of his neck with the same controlled force.
Chris’s body swayed as his vision blurred, his gaze briefly landing on Ling Xuan before shifting toward Laurel’s trembling form on the ground, and then everything went dark as he lost consciousness.
Silence settled over the space once more, broken only by Laurel’s uneven breathing as she lay curled on the ground, her body trembling from the cold she had taken into herself.
Luo floated towards Laurel’s side. "Master Laurel... Master Laurel... are you okay?"
"Is that a dumb question or what? You can literally see that she is not okay." Ling Xuan said, walking away.
Luo stared at Ling Xuan’s disappearing figure before returning to Laurel. "So heartless... even if Master Ling Xuan is not nice to you... Just know I won’t let anything happen to you."
The next moment, a thick blanket fell covering Laurel and Luo who was beside her.
Luo struggled, flailing its hands removing the thick thermo blanket. Luo opened its mouth to speak, but it saw Ling Xuan casually leaning on the wall, and the blanket, it couldn’t believe that Ling Xuan had just brought a blanket for Laurel.
’What is happening? Is the sun rising from the west?’ Luo wondered as it covered Laurel properly with the blanket.
