Chapter 38: Fifteen days to go

Sophie returned with a bowl of water and some bandages. She knocked on the door, waiting for a response, but she got none. She knocked again and again, until it became obvious that no one was coming.

She felt like leaving, but she remembered the wounds all over his body. She feared if she left, something bad could happen. Gritting her teeth, she took the risk and opened the door, walking in to see Riven collapsed on the floor unconscious.

Scared, she dropped the bowl on the ground carefully and moved to his side. She lifted his head up slightly and tapped the side of his face. His eyes fluttered and opened, her face the first thing he saw.

He saw the worry and fear plastered on her delicate face, and her gaze made him instantly sad. He couldn’t remember when someone looked at him with such a soft gaze in both worlds.

Trying to not allow the affection to go to his head, he sat up slowly. She helped him to make sure that he didn’t fall down. He glanced at the bowl and the bandage. "Thank you," he said and tried to prop himself up.

Because of adrenaline during the fight, he had failed to see just how injured and weak he was. His body cried out in pain right now, so much that he could barely move on his own.

She helped him to his feet and into the bathroom. She filled it up and then left him inside. Riven watched her carefulness to not do anything wrong, and he found it nice. Despite the fact that she didn’t like the young master, she still did what she did to help someone that was injured.

He got into the bathroom and washed off all the dirt and blood from his body. He stayed in the water for a while longer to allow his muscles to relax.

After he felt that he had soaked enough, he came out of the bath with only his underwear. He headed out of the bathroom. He found her still standing in the room waiting for him.

"You know you could have at least sat down, right? It’s not like my bed is some forbidden place," he said with a chuckle.

He cleaned himself up and asked for the bandage, but she refused, insisting that she would tie it around him herself to make sure that it was done well. Seeing her resolve to do it, he didn’t argue with her and allowed her to do it.

She took the bandage and began wrapping it around his body. She was careful to not touch him more than was needed. She moved fast and very precisely, as though she had been trained to do this.

After a few minutes, all the wounds on his body had been fully wrapped up. He put on some casual clothes after that and walked to her again.

"Thank you very much, Sophie," he said.

"It’s my duty, young master. But if I may, I’d like to ask how you got your wounds," she asked.

"Oh, yeah, I was in a dungeon. I am an adventurer after all," he said calmly and then walked to his bed.

She raised a brow, questioning what he said in her mind. The son of the baron adventuring? She didn’t see why that would be needed, but she didn’t have anything against it. Rather, she liked it, because he was meeting with commoners every day, a thing most nobles avoid.

"I’ll be taking my leave now, young master," she said, bowing her head and leaving the room.

After Sophie left, he decided to rest a bit. He didn’t check anything in his system or take out whatever he got from the dungeon. He wanted to observe all that for the night.

He just stayed on the bed, his eyes closed, but he wasn’t sleeping. He stayed that way for minutes and allowed his body to just relax.

[...]

Riven made his way out of the room. He decided it was time he kept that promise to his little sister. He walked through the halls, headed for the stairs, but then he saw his father along with Noel coming.

He stopped in his tracks and bowed his head to his father. "Greetings, father," he said in a respectful tone.

"Riven, I was actually headed to find you," his father said. Riven raised his head, looking at his father with a confused gaze.

"I’m sure you have heard of the dungeon that was found, right?" his father asked.

"Yes, father. I was in it today, as a matter of fact," he responded. Noel frowned immediately when he heard that. He clenched his fist tightly.

"Ohh? Is that so? That’s impressive then. Well, what I wanted to tell you is that because of the dungeon, the examination for the academy has been shifted forward.

In only fifteen days, the academy will start its examination, and they will be using the dungeon as trial grounds for one of the exams, as it is the lowest rank dungeon, and it means it is relatively safe.

Because I am the baron in charge of the dungeon, I have access to this information, and that gives you all a little bit of edge. The edge may not be too great, as even going into the dungeon multiple times doesn’t guarantee you will get into the academy," his father explained. But then, in the next few seconds, the light inside of his eyes dulled, and he looked at Riven with a cold expression.

"The trials are now in fifteen days, Riven. Do you still believe that you can make it into the academy in this short time?" his father asked.

"Yes, father, without a doubt," Riven said. His words made Noel clench his teeth in anger.

"Alright then. Well, Noel needs training, and so I am putting you up to go to the dungeon with Noel as a party and keep him safe. Let nothing happen to him, okay?" his father said and walked away, leaving the two boys staring at each other.
