An Extra's POV: My Three Fiancees Hate Me-Chapter 37: Sophie
Chapter 37: Sophie
After leaving the crowded dungeon area and the forest, he headed back to town. He only got close and he could see tons of carriages entering the town.
"I guess having a dungeon is really a big deal," he said and kept walking toward the gate. There was a line for people entering with their feet and people entering with carriages.
He ignored both though, he was far too injured to wait that long in a line, so he made his way to the gates, but as he passed people, they immediately started yelling about him cutting. Everyone was raging.
He didn’t pay attention to them though, headed his way to the front of the line and was about to enter, but suddenly a guard pushed him to the ground out of nowhere.
Normally, with his high perception, he would have known that someone was coming, but that was not the case now because he was distracted by his own pain.
He looked up in shock and saw the man standing above him, girded in simple steel armour, black hair and a smug expression on his face. He looked down at Riven like he was looking at some sort of dirt or something like that.
That expression on his face made Riven pissed. He tried to get back on his feet, but the man used his foot and pushed Riven back to the ground. Everyone watched and cheered for the guard; he was standing up for them and making sure that no one cut through the line.
"How dare you try to cut the line, kid?" he asked, his smug expression still on his face. The cheers of everyone around made him feel too big at the moment.
"You pushed me down twice," Riven muttered, but it was not loud enough for the man to hear.
"Huh? What did you say? Are you threatening me or something?" the man asked. He leaned in to take a closer look at Riven.
As the man did this, another guard saw what was happening and came to support his fellow guard, but when he laid eyes on the person on the ground, he froze. He tried to say something to his colleague, but only stutters filled with fear came out of his mouth.
The first guard turned when he heard the stutters. He looked at his colleague and was confused, "Raymond, what’s the issue? You aren’t drunk on duty now, are you?" he asked with a small smile.
But Raymond pointed at Riven on the ground, his hands still shivering as he pointed. "Th-that, that is the son of the Baron," he managed to force his words out, and immediately those words came out, the entire line went quiet.
Everyone seemed frozen in time, as their faces slowly distorted into one of fear. The guard that had pushed Riven down froze right there. He couldn’t believe his ears. Had he just ended his life right here and now?
Riven slowly got up. He said nothing and just started walking, but as he passed by the frozen guard, "You pushed me down twice," he said. His voice sounded normal, but in the ears of the guard, it sounded like the voice of death.
Publicly disrespecting a noble—was there a greater crime than that? Probably not. As Riven walked away, the man fell to his knees, his body shivering, he broke out in cold sweat.
Everyone on the line simply watched and shook their heads. They knew this man’s life was over, even if the noble did nothing about it, his superiors would definitely punish him gravely and remove him from the force.
[....]
Riven made his way into the town. He put what had happened at the back of his mind. He didn’t want to chase the issue more after this. After all, he already knew that the life of the guard was pretty much over now, even without him doing anything. That was the way life worked in this world.
He headed back home through the crowded streets of the town. He passed by Dark’s blacksmith on his way; he made a mental note to get his armour fixed there when he was free.
Arriving at the manor, he saw some luxurious carriages parked outside the compound. It meant that some merchants or nobles had come to talk business about the dungeon.
He walked into the house, his footsteps echoing through the empty hall. He didn’t see anyone, aside from some maids.
He stopped next to a maid, keeping a safe distance from her to not invade her personal space. The maid noticed someone near her, she looked up and saw Riven. Immediately, she took a step back and was about to bow to him.
"No need for that," he said, his voice borderline informal to keep her at ease. She was a young maid, no more than sixteen years old, with silver hair and eyes.
She stopped when he asked her to, but she still gave a greeting. "Good day, young master," she said, evading his gaze.
"What’s your name?" he decided to ask. No specific reason, but he figured that he didn’t know the name of any maid. He should at least know one so that he could call her whenever he needed.
She looked uncertain after hearing him ask for her name, but no matter how reluctant she was to give it, she couldn’t refuse him.
"My name is Sophie," she said, her head bowed slightly.
"That’s a nice name, Sophie," he complimented her. "I need some bandages, a bowl of water," he said.
It was after he said that she noticed that he was wounded all around his body. When she saw that, it was as though something clicked inside her mind, and her emotionless face shifted into one of care.
"Head to your room, young master. I’ll get everything right away," she said and walked away in a rush.
"Huh? What was with the sudden switch?" Riven asked himself. He watched her go before heading to his room as well. Immediately he entered, he slumped down to the ground.
