Delia Case’s assistant, Van Kane, sat on the couch in the luxurious ocean-view suite at the Four Seasons Hotel, watching the shameless couple enjoy a high-end therapeutic massage by two hotel VIP-exclusive masseuses in the open-door private massage room, a sight that tested his and the two poor masseuses’ hearts.
If America ever held a Scumbag Olympics, Van Kane swore, he felt certain Delia would secure the silver medal, while the gold would undoubtedly go to that bastard Tommy Hawk.
When he and Delia had rushed over, Tommy was alone, enjoying a massage. Delia and he sat in front of the massage room at the tea area, chatting with Tommy. However, before Tommy’s SPA treatment had even finished, he got up and started rolling around with Delia, and all Van could do was pull the shocked masseuse out of the room and close the door for them.
Just as he had shut that damned door, Delia had swung it open again, poking her head out to ask him to run to the designer store and buy her a pair of stockings from the same brand as she was wearing and a lady’s blouse because Tommy had torn them, and then Tommy appeared behind her, adding his request for Van to call the suite’s private butler and have a box of Florida citrus-flavored Trojan condoms delivered immediately.
Ten minutes ago, the couple’s mating ritual had finally concluded. Then the first thing Tommy said was to continue with the unfinished massage and even suggested Delia try it, so the masseuse who had been scared off by their previous antics was brought back in along with another masseuse. The two masseuses first cleaned up the massage room, which was a mess, and then began to provide private massages for Tommy and Delia.
Moreover, Tommy had said that to take care of Van’s feelings and prevent him from feeling isolated and neglected, they kept that damned door open.
After the massage was over and the masseuses had left with generous tips from Van’s hand and been personally escorted out, Van returned and wondered if he was hallucinating. He heard Tommy, lying on the massage bed with a bath towel draped across his back, seriously asking Delia where he should propose to his girlfriend and discussing the plans he had made while Delia, completely unashamed of having just been with a man about to get engaged, sincerely suggested details that could surprise Odelia even more.

Looking through that door, Van maliciously thought to himself, what could be more surprising to Odelia than her twenty-something boyfriend rolling in the sheets with a forty-two-year-old female lawyer and having his legal assistant run out to buy stockings, a blouse, and Florida citrus-flavored Trojan condoms?
This thought made Van extremely displeased; not because he considered his position as assistant to Delia Case, a senior partner at Davis Polk, one of great status, where running errands was beneath him. He had run many errands for Delia before, ranging from the time her period came early unexpectedly, and he had to rush out to purchase sanitary products and undergarments for her and deliver them to the ladies’ restroom.
He merely thought Tommy was off his rocker and was starting to worry that it was spreading to Delia.
Listen to their conversation; Delia asked Tommy why he was in Miami helping a Democratic plumber run for Congress and even got her to contact a top lawyer from their firm’s Miami office, a hardcore Republican, to take on the whole case for two elderly individuals. These kinds of internal party elections should be solved within the party. Tommy’s approach could easily cause Jeff to lose support within the Democratic Party. With a Republican opponent helping out and weeding out colleagues from the same faction, which politician would want to stand with Jeff in the future?
Just the information revealed in Delia’s question was enough to make Van’s brain short-circuit. Supporting a Democrat in the election, hiring Republican lawyers to litigate for the elderly, forcing the two most likely Cuban-American candidates from both parties to draw knives and battle it out before even the primaries had begun?
This was not a tactic fit for a politician. Having followed Delia, Van had witnessed many politicians’ dirty tricks, but most of it boiled down to compromise and trade. Tommy’s move, however, was completely reckless, disregarding friend and foe alike. In short, it was just to fight, regardless of whether the ones getting screwed were allies or enemies, or whether his own side would end up trampled after the dust settled.
