America 1982-Chapter 302 - 17: Conquering Hollywood
Capital of Georgia, Atlanta, Peachtree Street.
The top floor of the luxurious Waldorf Astoria Hotel.
David Schafer had drunk too much, this even portlier kid, who didn’t even wear dress pants, half his shirt buttons undone, and with round gold-rimmed glasses, had gotten even fatter than during high school summer camp.
At this moment, his face redolent of alcohol, he held a bottle of brandy that was mixed with ether or something else, stood in front of a huge floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the entirety of Atlanta, admiring the bustling night view. Raising the bottle in his hand, he drunkenly shouted to the city outside:
"I know what the world used to call me! Fatty! Idiot! Poor trash! Paranoid! Glutton! The white bastard with the smallest dick in the whole of Georgia! Fuck you! Look at me now! Those who insulted me, they’re not even worthy to lick my boots!"
After hurling insults, he turned around and said to the only two other men in the entertainment hall, Tommy and Stephen:
"They’re not worthy! Me, this white bastard, married a state representative’s daughter! Everyone knows what will happen in the future; those poor bastard relatives who used to look down on me, now have to force out fake smiles, hoping I will look after them in the future! Go to hell! Don’t even think about it!"
David was once a strong contender for the title of the biggest poor trash within the CS gang, just like Tommy, he belonged to the absolute poor, a proletariat. Since childhood, he was a poor trash who was always worried about money, and just like Tommy, he was adept at unconventional methods to achieve his purposes.
Thanks to the summer camp activities, he got a full scholarship to the University of Georgia, studied political science, and with the connections he cultivated during college and his nimble mind, he jumped ahead of many of his peers in the same field. He started his career directly from the office of Senator Sam Nunn of the Democratic Party of Georgia in Washington D.C., as an intern assistant.
Although just a mere intern assistant, working in the office of a Senator in Washington D.C., was completely different from working in an office in some remote small town, because the levels of people he encountered were entirely distinct.
This guy treasured this opportunity, so not long after his graduation, he set his sights on a girl who was also interning at the Capitol in Washington, the daughter of a Republican state representative from Georgia. David almost exhausted all of his sense of humor to woo this girl, who’s father had a certain political influence in Macon City, Georgia, and, fearing that delay may breed mishap, he proposed early and started planning the wedding.
He didn’t want to keep suffering; he wanted a shortcut, and the price was facing a woman he didn’t love at all for the rest of his life.
But he thought it was all worth it.
"The most important choice in my fucking life was that summer, which made me, us," David rolled up the sleeves of his shirt, revealing the small tattoo on his wrist, and said to the two men with a sincere face:
"My father-in-law has been scared shitless; he no longer thinks that I’m marrying his daughter to use his power. He now believes I’m marrying her because of damn love! All this is thanks to you! That’s how he knows now that I am not without anything! I fucking have a background that is enough to shock him! CSLS!"
Tommy and Stephen didn’t bother with false pleasantries; after all, they had indeed cooperated with David to give his contemptuous father-in-law a little shock, letting him witness David’s hidden connections.
When Stephen and Tommy met each other, they both said that if David someday decided to run for office, no matter what shitty position he was gunning for, he should never worry about insufficient campaign funds. They were very willing to provide some help.
The old man thought the two young men, who came out of nowhere, were bluffing, but then he saw his son-in-law David receiving two gifts presented by the two men.
They were two books that looked mundane.
The book from Stephen was an autobiography of his father Pete Binns, titled ’Beyond Fame and Fortune’, detailing his experiences as the Assistant Secretary of Health and Human Services during the administrations of President Kennedy and President Johnson, and it was a signed edition. The book even had a foreword written by President Lyndon B. Johnson himself.
"My father was impressed with our experiences at summer camp; he’s curious about why I, the richest among us, didn’t become Prime Minister. He can understand that, but he can’t fathom why even the position of Home Secretary was snatched by a guy named David. He specifically asked me to convey his blessings to you." These were Stephen’s words as he handed the book to David in front of his father-in-law.
Tommy presented a new book by the famous biographer Wayne Handeck, called ’Discovering God in America’, which chronicled the philanthropic journey of Ms. Ottilia Farrell.
In the book, the long string of titles attributed to Ottilia, the most important was being the youngest board member of the New World Foundation in its decades of existence.
"Ottilia couldn’t attend your wedding, but she made sure to instruct me to convey her blessings to you. I asked her, and she should be available to attend when we have our wedding, so by then you can ask her in person why she was too busy to come and bless you herself." This is what Tommy said to David as he handed over the book in front of David’s father-in-law.
After the two men gave their gifts, the father-in-law’s look towards David changed completely.
