Chapter 97: Chapter 97 DNA Testing

Then she heard Prince Adam continue to say to her, "Emily, the doctor said my father is in a bad state and that he can’t be stimulated in any way. So, whatever he says to you, please don’t irritate him any further, okay?"

A hint of guilt flashed in Emily’s eyes, and her voice was as low as a falling feather. "I see."

Prince Adam glanced at Emily uneasily, sighed softly, and said, "I’d better go in with you."

Emily entered the room, and for a moment, it seemed as if the whole world had fallen silent. She saw King James in his hospital bed, as weak as a withered flower petal. A white, clear tube was inserted under his nose and connected to a ventilator, which seemed to be the lifeline sustaining his fragile existence. He leaned against a white pillow, his face pale and haggard, as if it had been inexorably eroded by time and disease.

"Emily." King James’s voice was soft, like a breeze in her ears, but it was full of unending anticipation. "Come here."

Emily’s steps were heavy, and she slowly walked to the side of the hospital bed. Her voice was barely audible, "Your Majesty."

King James took Emily’s hand. His hand was slightly cold, but it was firm. He said to her, "I’m not going to force you to take a DNA test. Whether you’re my daughter or not, I’m determined to compensate you well, so please don’t refuse me anymore, okay?"

Emily’s heart was filled with tangled, indescribably complex emotions. She didn’t want to acquiesce to the king’s request, but she couldn’t bear to refuse him, especially when she saw him so weak. She knew that King James must feel guilty about his mother and wanted to make amends. But she truly didn’t need such compensation.

"Emily," Prince Adam called softly to Emily, his voice full of appeal. "Please."

Emily lifted her eyes and saw Prince Adam’s pleading gaze, like deep waters, that she couldn’t refuse. So, she reluctantly nodded her head and agreed to King James’s request.

King James finally smiled contentedly, released Emily’s hand, and slowly closed his eyes. After King James had fallen asleep, Emily quietly left the room.

As she was walking through the hospital hallway, a voice stopped her. Emily looked back and saw Prince Adam standing behind her.

"Emily," said Prince Adam, "can you accompany me downstairs for a walk in the garden? I want to talk to you."

Emily nodded. "Okay."

Together, they went to the small garden of the hospital. The garden was fragrant with the faint scent of flowers, and sunlight shone through the crevices in the leaves, creating patches of light. However, at that moment, they had no intention of admiring the serene beauty. After a moment of silence, Prince Adam spoke, "Do you also find it strange that my father’s former partner is actually your mother?"

Emily was stunned, her eyes full of surprise and confusion. "Do you know what happened between them?"

Prince Adam nodded. "Yes, my father told me about his past." 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖

He stopped and stared at Emily. His gaze was deep and warm. "Emily, since my father wants to take care of you like his daughter, I will treat you like my sister as well."

Emily lowered her head slightly and whispered, "There’s no need for that, Your Highness. Besides, I’m not necessarily the king’s daughter." There was a hint of stubbornness and persistence in her voice, as if she were guarding the pure land within.

Prince Adam didn’t speak, but he looked at Emily quietly, his eyes seeming to see through the mist of time to the softness and strength of her heart. A gentle breeze blew, gently brushing their faces and bringing a hint of coolness. Emily felt something land lightly on her head, a subtle touch that made her wonder. As she was about to use her hand to search for what had fallen on her, Prince Adam whispered, "Don’t move." His voice was a gentle whisper, and it made Emily involuntarily stop her movements.

Then he slipped his hand into her hair, moving it so gently that it seemed as if he were handling a precious work of art. Then, he handed her a fallen azalea. "Here you go."

It turned out that a rhododendron petal had just landed in her hair. As Emily took the flower from Prince Adam’s hand, she noticed that his eyes were full of perplexity and an indescribable emotion, like a deep lake, unpredictable.

"Emily, let me be your brother," Prince Adam said with a bitter smile, a smile of helplessness and longing. "So I can take care of you for the rest of my life."

Prince Adam’s words brought Emily’s heart to her throat, and she couldn’t understand his real intentions. Their relationship had always been clear and unequivocal in her mind, and there had never been a thought of anything more than friendship. But there were certain things she had to make clear to him.

"Prince Adam, I’m married," Emily said firmly. "And I only see you as an ordinary friend. I’ve never had any inappropriate thoughts about you."

Prince Adam smiled indifferently, a smile that was understanding and tolerant. "I know."

He looked so calm, as if he had anticipated her reaction. Perhaps she had misunderstood him, or perhaps his concern stemmed solely from pure friendship and respect for his father. Emily’s doubts dissipated, replaced by a sense of relief.

........

Prince Adam returned to the hospital building after watching Emily leave. He had a few strands of brown hair hidden in his hand. Just now, as he had been plucking the rhododendron petals from Emily’s hair, he had inadvertently broken a few strands of her hair with his fingers, so lightly and swiftly that Emily hadn’t even noticed.

Some truths might not be important to Emily and her father, but they were important to Adam.

He handed the brown hair in his hand to a doctor and ordered, "Take these hairs for DNA testing."
