Alpha's replacement bride is destined mate-Chapter 215 Retreat
" Wait until they get closer!" Emily whispered, her voice muffled by the rain, but carrying an undeniable authority. The party nodded a little, and the grip tightened on the gun in their hands, the only weapon they had against the enemy, rudimentary as it was, and bearing the hopes of all.
Like a long black snake, the Union column moved slowly forward through the muddy water of the river. They were not even aware of the approaching danger, and were still shouting so loudly that the cacophony of voices carried up the hillock in the rain. As the Northerners moved into optimal attack range, a flash of determination flashed in Emily’s eyes and she shouted, "Fire!"
In an instant the report of the gun broke the calm of the rain-curtains, and echoed like thunder through the valley. The muzzles of the raiding parties belched forth angry flames, and the bullets galloped like runaway horses toward the Northern army. Under the impact of the first volley the men of the Northern army fell like wheat cut by a scythe. The otherwise neat line of march was instantly thrown into confusion.
After a brief period of confusion, the soldiers of the Northern Army responded quickly. "Counterattack!" The roar of the Northern commanding officer resounded along the banks. Immediately afterwards a heavy fire was poured upon the raiding party on the hillock. Bullets rained down on the hillocks, sending up plumes of dust and water. The grass around the team members was shot to pieces.
One of the team screamed miserably, his body jerking before he fell limply to the ground. There was a bloody hole in the centre of his forehead, and the blood spurted out like a spring, and ran in frightful trails across his face, mingling with the rain. Another member of the team was hit in the arm and his gun fell to the ground. He covered his wound in agony, and his face was as white as paper.
"Take cover!" Emily cried, as she rolled quickly behind a boulder. In the process of dodging, she saw the teammate beside her was hit by a bullet in the abdomen, his whole body flew backwards and fell heavily on the ground, his body curled up into a ball, blood continued to seep out from between his fingers, and soon formed a pool of blood underneath him. Emily’s eyes burned with anger, but this was no time for mourning. She had to think of a way to break through the enemy’s fire.
Emily observed the surrounding terrain and spotted a small ravine to her right that could be used as a breakout for her attack. "Follow me!" Emily shouted to the remaining members of the team. With a cat’s back, she darted toward the ravine amid a shower of bullets. Bullets whizzed past her, hitting the ground and splattering dirt on her face. The procession followed close behind her, and every step was fraught with danger.
On the way to the ravine two more members of the party were tragically struck. Jeff’s leg was broken and he fell to the ground, yelling towards Emily, "Leave me alone and go!" Emily ground her teeth, and there was a flash of pain in her eyes, but she did not stop. When they finally broke into the gully, Emily took a head count and there were less than half the team left.
" Attack from the side and disrupt their formation!" Emily said, taking the lead, and dashing out of the ravine. The members of the regiment followed, and they charged the northern flank. The suddenness of the attack took the Northern troops somewhat by surprise, and the men on the flanks hastily turned their guns and fired upon them.
One of the Northern soldiers raised his rifle and fired at Emily, who rolled over on her side and ducked behind a body of the enemy. The bullet struck the body, splattering blood, and Emily saw the right moment to peek from behind it and shoot the enemy in the head.
As enemy bullets continued to rain down on them, Emily ducked and took cover in a sunken mound.
Emily dodged behind the mound, the bodies of her dead teammates in front of her. She clutched her gun tightly in her hand, and her eyes were full of grief.
I am all alone, thought Emily.
She remained motionless in the mound, and if the enemy came she broke off to meet them with her last bullet.
The Northern Army, however, appeared to have halted its attack. The noise of firing and cannonading died away, and only the sound of the rain tickled Emily’s ears.
Suddenly there was a long, dull bugle-call. Immediately afterward, Emily heard someone shout, "Retreat."
Had the North retreated? Emily waited for complete silence before cautiously poking her head over the mound to check the situation.
Emily looked in the direction of the Northern army, wondering what could have caused the enemy to withdraw so suddenly. Was it a new strategic plan, or was there something going on in the rear?
Emily climbed out of the pit of dirt. Suddenly a thought came into her mind: why had it been so long since we had seen any support troops arrive? Is something wrong?
A feeling of uneasiness came over her, and Emily decided to go back to the pack immediately and find out what was the matter.
........
The field was thick with smoke, and Dyson, standing on a makeshift command platform, watched the battle unfold before him. Just as the battle was entering its height, he heard bad news.
" Alpha." The adjutant reported to Dyson with a tense expression, " Our capital is under the control of Alpha Klaus."
" What?" Dyson asked hurriedly, " Who has taken control of the Capitol?"
" Yes. It’s Alpha Klaus,"the adjutant stammered in reply.
"Isn’t he dead? " Dyson’s body jolted, his eyes filled with shock and disbelief.
"No, Alpha Klaus is not dead. " The adjutant said, "In addition, news has come from the Western Army: they have broken through the border defenses on the right flank of the South. The Wolf King of the West told us to join their army at the Red Moon Pack immediately. Now should we move on or..."
"Order the army to retreat, now. "Dyson said decisively," Let the western army deal with the south by themselves, we will return to the capital at once." 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞
" Yes, sir." The adjutant immediately did so.
On the field of battle, the bugles sounded the retreat. The officers shouted orders for the men to remain in formation and fall back to the rear. The sound of gunfire died away and was replaced by the rush of soldiers’ feet and the clash of weapons and equipment.
