Alpha's replacement bride is destined mate-Chapter 170 Carnage
" Carl, we need to hurry." Emily sat in the passenger seat, her eyes fixed on the road ahead. It was evident that they had travelled some distance. Why had she not seen the sign at the entrance to the pack?
Carl’s hands tightened on the steering wheel as he picked up speed. The truck rocked slightly, and Emily, who was in the passenger seat, tensed for an instant, her hand reaching subconsciously for the handle above the door to steady herself.
At that moment, the speed of the truck eased slightly from what it had been moments before.
"Sorry, I have to control my speed. " Carl said cautiously, "The truck was loaded with supplies, and if it went too fast, there was a good chance it would flip over."
Emily had stopped rushing Carl, and was sitting quietly in her seat, her hands clasped tightly in front of her, praying for a quick return to the pack, a tense atmosphere pervading the car, and only the slight roar of the engine ringing in her ears.
Perhaps the Moon-god heard her prayer, for presently the entrance sign of the Green Forest Pack was in sight. The iron sign glowed faintly white in the sunlight.
Nearer and nearer to the pack, Emily could even plainly see the two sentinels standing at the entrance of the pack, and the members of the pack passing in and out. Everything looked the same as it always had. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚
As soon as the truck came to a stop, Emily eagerly pushed open the door and jumped out. As soon as her feet touched the ground she felt the solidity of the earth. Emily narrowed her eyes a little, scanned her surroundings, and the uneasiness in her heart increased.
"Susan—" Before Emily could finish her sentence, she only heard a sharp roar of a car in her ears. All were instantly on the alert, and their gaze was directed in unison in the direction from which the sound had come.
Only the sight of a jeep, like a wild beast, hurtling toward the pack with the speed of wind and lightning, and the dust filling the air, was disconcerting.
Emily’s body tightened for an instant, and her eyes grew keen and alert. The two guards at the entrance were instantly alerted and raised their weapons, and Susan subconsciously stepped in front of Emily to protect her with her body.
However, while everyone waited, Emily saw the driver’s face through the Jeep’s windshield. The familiar figure gave her a sense of relief, and she hurriedly said to Susan, "It’s Dolly."
The Jeep screeched to a halt in front of the crowd with an ear-splitting screech, and Dolly flung open the door and jumped out, followed by the twins, who pushed open their own doors and got out.
" Emily. " Dolly ran in front of Emily, she sounded desperate, "It’s Dyson, he’s going to massacre everyone in the pack."
"He also took control of the airport and destroyed all the signaling equipment. " Mina snaps.
Maggie’s face was flushed as she carried the pack. She tried to interject, but Dolly held up her hand to silence.
"Emily, We need to be ready for this. " Dolly said, "Dyson’s men are already coming towards the pack."
Damn Dyson, he’s going to slaughter the pack. Is he crazy? Emily made a split-second decision. She ordered Susan, " Susan, sound the alarm, all hands on deck."
Then Emily turned to Carl and said, " Carl, you—"
Suddenly a shell whizzed across the sky. The shrill sound seemed like the roar of a demon, and for an instant disturbed the peace of the pack.
Every one looked up in terror, only to see the shell, like a blazing meteor, trailing a long tail of flame, descending upon the pack with tremendous rapidity.
Before anyone could recover from the shock, the shell hit the ground. There was a "bang", the earth shook violently, and the huge impact of the explosion was like a raging ocean wave, knocking everything around to the ground.
The dust flew up like a great dark cloud, which soon enveloped the whole region. Debris was flying everywhere, hitting people’s bodies and bringing gusts of pain.
This, however, was only the beginning of the disaster. Immediately afterwards another shell whistled through the sky. The chilling sound of the whistle brought the heart to the throat once more. Desperate, the crowd fled in every direction, trying to find cover from the impending destruction. But the speed of the shells was simply too great to give them any chance at all.
"Boom!" A second shell exploded in another part of the pack, sending flames into the sky as thick smoke billowed out.
A third shell followed before the men could catch their breath. The shell was like the scythe of death, cutting into the pack. "Boom!" There was another loud bang.
The fourth shell, the fifth. . . . Shells rained down on the pack.
"Run, Luna. " Carl shielded Emily with his body as he desperately yelled at everyone, "Everyone get to the safe house."
Susan and Dolly immediately protected the two girls as they ran and dodged the barrage.
The ground shook violently, and Emily’s body quivered with the shock. Carl took her by the wrist and led her through the flames.
Carl seized her by the wrist and led her through the flames. As the shelling continued, Emily watched in horror as the pack was transformed into something she had once known. The once-familiar pack is now a living hell. Buildings crumbled under the bombardment with a deafening noise. The once-sturdy houses are as vulnerable as a house of cards. Rocks, tiles, and dust flew through the air as if in a terrible sandstorm.
The people in the streets fled in all directions, and screams and cries mingled. Some ran in confusion, not knowing where to go; The others sat paralyzed with fear, and cried out in despair.
Emily saw an old man fall in the confusion, and before he could get up a shell exploded not far away, and a powerful blast of air threw the old man to the ground. The old man groaned with pain, but no longer had the strength to rise.
Emily’s heart clenched. She wanted to go and help the injured, but Carl held her fast and would not let her stop.
" We have to get to the safe house first, Luna!" Carl shouted, his voice muffled in the sound of the gunfire.
They continued to run through the streets, dodging the constantly falling shells. Each explosion sent a shudder down their spines, as if death were coming at any moment.
Emily saw a young mother running with her baby in her arms when suddenly a shell landed next to them. Instinctively the mother clung to her child, shielding it with her body from the blast. When the smoke cleared, the mother and child were in a pool of blood, a scene that brought tears to Emily’s eyes.
" We have to save them." Emily uttered a cry of despair. Carl didn’t answer. He only held her close and ran on. They ran through street after bombed-out street, each one reeking of death and despair.
" Let me go and save them." Emily’s eyes were red as she wrenched Carl’s hand away, screaming at the top of her lungs, "Let me go!"
Emily shook Carl’s hand off, her body quivering with the force of her decision. The next second Karl wasted no time in wrapping his arms around her waist from behind, and his arms, strong as steel, tightened around Emily. Carl turned swiftly and led her under the eaves of a house. His movements were decisive and swift, as if he were racing against death.
"Why didn’t you let me save them?" Emily’s eyes burned with rage as she pounded Carl’s chest, blow after blow, each one full of her pain and resentment. Tears welled in her eyes, but obstinately refused to fall.
" What’s the last rule for dealing with a raid?" Carl’s face reddened with anxiety and anger, and he shouted at Emily, his voice ringing in the confusion. " Tell me!"
Emily froze for a moment, her eyes momentarily dimming as she forced herself to hold back the pain inside, her voice trembling as she replied, " Stay alive as long as you can and then evacuate."
" Then do it!" Carl’s voice was firm and unmistakable.
Scarcely had Carl finished speaking when a shell fell near the house. The explosion was so loud that it hurt the eardrums, and the shock wave was so strong that it knocked them to the ground again. Carl quickly shielded her beneath him, shielding her from the rocks with his own body.
" Run." Carl pulled Emily up quickly from the ground. There was still fear in Emily’s eyes, but she knew that she could not hesitate at that moment. Like two birds struggling in a storm, they ran hard in the direction of the safe house.
Suddenly another shell exploded not far away, and the powerful shock sent them tumbling again. Carl shielded Emily with his body, debris raining down on his back, but he did not flinch. But he did not retreat, and, gritting his teeth, drew Emily up again.
At last, through the rolling smoke, the outline of the safe-house came into view, like a bright light in the darkness. The faint outline seemed like an island of hope emerging from the chaos, bearing their desire for life.
The safe-house stood silent, so small in the midst of the ceaseless fire, and yet incomparably strong. Its walls seemed to be an impenetrable barrier against the storm outside. The closed gates, like the guards who guard the last pure patch of land, make one feel at ease.
Emily and Carl, with the last of their strength, rushed heavily toward the safety of the house.
They ran through the rubble, the ground under their feet pockmarked by explosions. The smoke kept coming in and choking them, but they did not flinch.
At last they reached the door of the safe-house, and Carl pushed it open with all his might, and a wave of peace swept over them. They burst into the safe house and collapsed, gasping for air.
