Chapter 82: Chapter 82

Lily POV

A few days later, I woke up at the crack of dawn and quickly went through my morning routine. I had spent the night at Celeste’s house.

By the time I heard movements downstairs, I’d already bathed and showered. When I went down, I saw a dishevelled Celeste in the kitchen nursing a cup of coffee. From the tired look on her face and the sleep bags under her eyes, I knew she didn’t have a good night’s sleep.

Celeste was in charge of the Welfare servicing of the pack. She allocated funds for meetings, and social groups, took reports of the training and welfare of the pack warriors and everything that had to do with welfare. Since Kai didn’t have a Luna yet, she and her mom were helping out.

“Hey,” I greeted her as soon as I entered the kitchen.

“Lily?” she narrowed her eyes at me, staring at her wristwatch. “It’s not time for your training yet. Where are you going dressed like this.”

“To help you,” I said brightly. “You don’t seem like you want to leave the house this early and with your final exams coming, you’re supposed to be resting at the slightest chance you have. What if I helped you out today? All you need to do is tell me what exactly needs to be done.”

Celeste stared at me for a few seconds then shook her head. “Kai is going to kill me if he hears that I’m making you leave the house so early this morning. He cannot stand the fact that I made you do simple house chores. He’s going to banish me if he...”

“He doesn’t have to know,” I said quickly. “I won’t tell him.”

“How about others? If I don’t show up today, they’re bound to mention it to him as a passing glance and by the time they describe you, he’d be furious. So, no, dear. Anything but that. I just need a cup of coffee and after that, I’ll be on my way. Don’t worry, I’ll be fine and I’ve been doing this for some time now. I’m used to it.”

“Celeste,” I moved closer to her and grabbed her hand. “Listen, I and Kai are going to get married one day and I don’t have the slightest idea on how to be a Luna. Please, just let me do these little things.”

She stared at me for a few seconds and then sighed. “I hate it when you beg me... it makes me powerless. Fine! You can go but just for today and you don’t have to worry about your duties as Luna, with the way Kai treats you, I’m sure he’ll ask me and Mom to keep running the pack for you. He cannot stand the thought of you working.”

“That will change soon,” I chuckled. “Thank you.”

A few minutes later, Celeste gave me a run-down on everything I had to do this morning. She even called the various supervisors and informed them of my coming.

By the time the sun was up and full in the sky, I had covered almost all the tasks except checking in with the Warriors and making sure they received a new set of training gear and equipment.

I made my way to their training ground. Most of them were already preparing for drills while others were practicing sparring in the open field.

The training instructor came out to meet me. “Good morning, Miss, Celeste told me you were coming,” he said quietly holding out his hands to me as he assisted me out of the car.

“Yes!” I nodded, giving him a bright smile. “I’ve come to get the report for the warriors for this week and did the gear and training equipment arrive?”

“Yes, miss,” he nodded “And everything is just like how we desire.”

Both of us were walking across the field to a small, building at the edge of the field which he disappeared into and came back after a few seconds handing me the report which I requested.

I made a few inspections before I headed back to my car. By the time I drove back to Celeste’s house, the only thing I wanted to do was to lay in bed and just sleep. No one told me this was going to be as difficult as this.

The next day, I showed up at the Pack meetings. I studied the pack financial reports, thanks to Celeste and Beta Liam who assisted me. I asked pointed questions about pack management from Kai’s mother and volunteered to champion most of the tasks.

By the end of the week, I was weary but it was the good kind. I felt so fulfilled. Since we had an important test the next day at college, I went to school.

As I made my way to my first class thinking about how to maintain my balance between my personal life and my growing responsibilities within the pack , a familiar, disdainful voice spoke from behind me.

“Well, well, if it isn’t the pack’s little charity cake.”

I stifled a sigh and turned to see Briella in her usual company of friends. Each of them held one of her belongings. These days she parades herself all over the campus as Luna, making people do what she wants, even the lecturers. She would threaten anyone who didn’t want to tolerate her excesses by saying she would report them to her Kai.

“Good morning to you too, Briella,” I said coolly and turned to keep walking when her voice stopped me again.

“I hear you’re trying to play Luna now. Isn’t that adorable?”

I clenched my fists at my sides but forced a calm expression. “I’m just doing what’s needed for the pack.”

She laughed, “Please, you think you can handle being Luna? You can barely keep up here,” then she leaned forward and whispered into my ears. “Being Kai’s mate doesn’t make you the perfect Luna,” before leaning away and saying. “The only reason you’re still around is because of Kai.”

I chuckled, raising my voice slightly higher now that we’ve attracted a small crowd.

“is there something specific you’d like to discuss, Briella?”

My calm response threw her off-balance. No doubt she’d expected tears. Anger. Something that would prove I was out of my depth.

Instead, I schooled my expression...

“I’m just concerned,” Briella said, recovering quickly. “About someone who doesn’t understand pack traditions suddenly thinking she can be involved in it.”

“Traditions evolve,” I responded. “Or they become obsolete.”

I was not just talking about traditions, I was also making it clear that I didn’t need her permission to do what needed to be done, and neither was I in the mood to banter words with her.

“Just because you know the Alpha’s sister doesn’t make you anything,” she retorted.

“You don’t know anything about me, Briella,” I said calmly.”

“Oh, I know enough,” she sneered. “You’re a nobody who lucked into Kai’s favour. But don’t think for a second that makes you...” she leaned closer muttering in my ears “Worthy of him – or this pack.”

My blood boiled with anger at the way she was trying to make everyone not know I was involved with Kai, but I refused to let it show.

“Maybe instead of tearing others down, you should focus on proving your own worth.”

The crowd murmured in surprise at my boldness and the smirk left Briella’s lips as her green eyes narrowed into slits.

“Mind yourself, Lily,” she hissed. “You are playing a losing game.”

I glared at her. “And you’re underestimating me.”

With that, I turned on my heel and walked away, my heart pounding in my chest. I could feel the thousand pairs of eyes on my back but I couldn’t care less.

Since I’m going to be a Luna, I should be used to this.
