Chapter 70: Chapter 70

Lily POV

I stared at my phone screen, my thumb hovering over Lucas’s latest message. It has become a familiar scene over the past few weeks.

At first, the messages would come twice a week, but these days, they were becoming more insistent. Waking up with a text from him was fast becoming normal and scary.

“Saw someone wearing that perfume you used to love. Made me think of all those nights at our secret hideouts in the forest. Remember?”

I did remember and that was the problem. I remembered everything: the good times we shared and then the ugly ending that had left me piecing myself back together. Now, here I was, finally happy with Kai and Lucas’s messages kept appearing like ghosts in my inbox.

My phone buzzed again:

“I know you’re reading these, Lily. The little read receipts don’t lie.”

I cursed under my breath, trembling as I tried to turn off my read receipts in the chat’s settings. This had been his pattern lately – starting with nostalgia, then getting increasingly pushy when I didn’t respond – I don’t ever plan on responding.

I’d blocked his number twice already, but he kept finding new ones to use.

“Just give me five minutes to explain. That’s all I’m asking. Take your calls... please, Lily...”

I quickly deleted it, trying to turn my phone upside down, to prevent myself from getting distracted, I was in lectures. I had barely turned the phone when another message popped up immediately:

“You can’t ignore me forever. We have too much history.”

Delete.

“I’m not the same person I was back then. I’ve changed... your sister pushed me into it but I promise, I’m ready to do anything you want. You name it.”

“Delete.

I tossed my phone into my bag, trying to breathe, trying to calm my racing thoughts. Part of me wanted to respond, to tell him exactly why I’d never give him another chance. To lay out every painful memory, every broken promise, every tear I’d shed because of him. But I knew better.

Any response, even an angry one, would only encourage him.

Suddenly, someone next to me was nudging me, startling me out of my reverie. I saw the lecturer and the entire class staring curiously at me. That was when I discovered that the lecturer must have asked me a question.

“Is my class that boring, Lily? You seemed you’d rather be elsewhere than here?” The lecturer said, glaring at me.

“N-No, ma’am,” I hurriedly rose to my feet. “I’m sorry, I zoned out. I’m truly sorry.” I bowed my head severally showing my remorse.

The woman stared at me with a bored expression, waving at me to sit. “If you have problems, you have at least eight hours to yourself each day to worry about that. I don’t appreciate you using my class time to think.”

“Yes, ma’am,” I nodded flushing with embarrassment.

For the rest of the lectures that day, I fought hard not to check my phone, despite the numerous messages dinging. I was sure they were all from Lucas. By the end of lectures that day, I hurried to my apartment. I was so nervous.

Against my better judgment, I checked my phone again.

“Remember that night at our hideout? When we danced in the rain and you said you’d love me forever and we kissed? I just remembered it right now. gods! We were so perfect, Lily... so much...”

My hand trembled as I deleted that one. Of course, he would bring up intimate moments like that. It had been one of our perfect memories before everything fell apart. Before I caught him with my sister.

Another message:

“Remember that night I came into your room at Royal Hunter’s pack, you looked so good in the blue nightwear... I wanted to kiss you so badly. I miss you.”

Ice ran through my veins at his cringy words. Why would he even bring that up? It happened months ago. The next message came with a photo of me lying on the bed – that night he had broken into my room. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖

“We could be happy again. Just talk to me.”

I trembled staring at the picture. I was fast asleep... a deathly pallor on my face. How had he felt so comfortable taking this sort of picture of me? This time, I took a screenshot before deleting it. Just in case. Just to be safe.

My fingers hovered over Kai’s number in my contacts. I kept putting off telling him and for a good reason too. These days, he has been so busy, that we rarely have time to spend with each other. I didn’t want to bother him. He already has so much on his plate.

I also know he would want to know about this. He was my mate and knowing who he is, he’ll be pissed if he finds out by himself.

Another chime:

“Alpha Kai... are you seeing him right now? He’s not right for you, Lily. He’s a brute, cold, unforgiving... you saw how he was that day. Besides, he can’t understand you like I do.”

My blood ran cold at his words. At least he has realized that there’s a probability that I may be going out with Kai.

“He’s too old for you anyway. Too serious. You need someone who knows how to make you laugh. Someone who will make tender love to you. Alpha Kai is not that person.”

Delete.

“Remember how we used to laugh?”

Delete.

“Lily, please. I’m sorry. For everything. Just give me a chance to prove it.”

I sat on my bed, wrapping my arms around myself. The words blurred as tears filled my eyes. Not sad tears – angry one. Angry at Lucas for trying to worm his way back into my life, angry at myself for letting his messages affect me like this.

My phone lit up again:

“I’ve changed. I’m better now. Alpha Kai... he’s engaged, isn’t he? You deserve better than being someone’s secret. You deserve someone who can love you openly.”

If I hadn’t been so angry, I would have laughed at his hypocrisy as if he didn’t hurt me. Suddenly, a door at my door made me jump. I quickly wiped my eyes and checked the peephole. Kai stood there, looking concerned.

I cleaned my eyes as best as I could before I opened the door, forcing a smile. “Hi...” I greeted cheerily.

His eyes narrowed at me slightly as he took in my face. “You’ve been crying.”

“I’m fine,” I chuckled. “I was just watching a sad movie... it was really sad.”

He came to me, cupping my face in his hands as his thumbs gently wiped away the tear tracks. “I could feel your distress from outside your door. Talk to me. Please. What happened?”

My phone chimed again, making me flinch.

Kai’s expression darkened. “Who’s sending you a message at this time?”

“Maybe it’s people from my school work,” I said hurriedly, trying to reach for my phone but he was faster. He held my phone in his hand, raising it within my reach.

“You’ll hate me for this, Lily but I can’t stand it again. You’ve been hiding something from me right? All the few times we’ve been together, you were constantly checking your phone. I’m sorry but I need to know. So, I’ll snoop around a bit.”

I didn’t stop him – maybe it was time.

I watched his face as he opened my phone, and of course, Lucas’s message was on the screen for him to see. His face went from concern to anger, then something darker.

“How long has this been going on?” He asked quietly.

“A few weeks. It’s not a big deal...”

“It’s not a big deal?” He scoffed. “He’s practically stalking you. Took pictures of you without your knowledge. He’s threatening...”

“He hasn’t threatened me.”

“You can’t ignore me forever... sounds like a threat to me.” Kai pulled me close. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

I pressed my face into his chest, breathing in his comforting scent. “I thought I could handle it. I didn’t want to worry you and I honestly hoped he would stop.”

“I’m your mate,” he reminded me softly. “You’re worries are my worries.”

My phone chimed one final time. I tried to look down but he held my chin..., keeping my face up.

“Don’t...” he said quietly. “I’ll handle it from here.”

“W-what will you do?’ I stuttered.

“The right thing...”

“Please...” I shook my head. “I don’t want this to blow over. Can you find a subtle way to handle it? Maybe, I could change my number. How about that?”

He stared at me for a while before he sighed. “Are you trying to protect him?”

“No!” I shook my head. “I am trying to protect myself and this is what Lucas wants. If this blows over, my father and my sister will know that I live here and things might blow out of proportion. I don’t want that. Please...”
