Chapter 33: Chapter 33

Lily POV

I kept my gaze fixed on the floor... the atmosphere in the office had heated up. It filled me with anxiety and curiosity at the same time.

Why wasn’t he letting go of my hand?

I dared not look up into his eyes again – I heard that when his eyes were fixed on someone, that the person would later become his prey and toy and I didn’t want to be that to him. At least, not his prey. My mind flitted back to another rumour I heard in the past.

They said he had killed all the messengers sent by a rival pack during a way, annexing their territory within a fortnight. It was the kind of tale that made even the bravest wolves shudder and it didn’t help that his eyes – cold, calculating and sharp still unsettled me.

A knock on the door suddenly interrupted my thoughts and I snapped out my reverie immediately. Kai groaned as he reluctantly let go of my hand, looking at me with a longing I couldn’t deserve. I blinked, realizing that I had been holding my breath. Kai’s grip on my hands had been firm, almost possessive, but now that he had let go, I felt both relieved and strangely empty.

The door opened and Liam – Kai’s Beta entered the room. His eyes darted between us, his expression barely changing. Still, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of relief at seeing him. Although, I still felt a bit uneasy around him as well. I wasn’t sure I could fully trust anyone in this pack yet, especially with all the warnings I’d received about people who were nothing but nice to me.

“I’m here, Alpha,” Liam said breaking the silence.

“Good!” Kai nodded and took a step away from me “Kai will take you home but first, can you excuse us for a bit, I need to discuss some things with Liam,”.

I nodded obediently and lipped out of the office, giving Liam a small, polite smile as I left. Once outside, I exhaled deeply, as if releasing all the tension that had built up inside me during that brief encounter. I wasn’t entirely sure what I’d expected from my first report meeting with Kai, but it had certainly left me with more questions than answers.

I made my way to the waiting room, deciding to wait for Beta Liam there and was surprised to find Briella there. She was doing her makeup – applying a fresh coat of lipstick in front of a mirror.

My eyes scanned her form as I sighed sadly. Briella was everything a man wanted in a woman. She was gorgeous with long legs, big boobs and all the curves that would make anyone want her. She was the kind of girl who would never know what it felt like to be rejected.

Everything was going for her – beauty, confidence and every other thing. I caught myself in the mirror and sighed in disappointment. There was no way Kai would choose me over her.

I was startled... where had that thought come from? Why on earth do I want Kai to choose between me and her when I stood no chance? Suddenly, Briella noticed my presence through the mirror. She paused her makeup and arched a perfectly groomed brow at me.

“What took you so long?” she asked “I thought you were never going to finish with him,”.

I forced myself to remain calm, also reminding myself that I had no reason to feel inferior. Kai was just doing his job and Briella too – as the future Luna of this pack, it was okay for her to ask questions like that. Kai was her man.

I met Briella’s gaze in the mirror and responded “Kai, was just ensuring that I’m harmless to the pack. Nothing more,”.

Briella let out a derisive snort. The corner of her red lips twists into an amused sneer. “Harmless?” she echoed “What harm would a wolfless girl like you possibly do our pack? I mean you were driven from yours because you were not a threat. So, what harm could you do?”

I felt the sting of those words, but I refused to let them show on my face or affect me. I’d grown used to such remarks which was like taking in air in my former pack but it didn’t mean they hurt any less. Still, I wasn’t about to give Briella the satisfaction of seeing me hurt.

I gave her a small smile and was thankful when Briella’s phone rang. Briella glanced at the screen and immediately, a happy expression entered her face. She dropped her makeup kits and cleared her throat before taking the call. She also made sure it was on speaker.

“Hello Mother, good evening,” she said slowly, her tone was so sweet that I would have doubted she was the same person mocking me a few minutes ago if I had not been in the room.

“Hello my dear,” the other side of the phone responded. “I’ve been trying to reach Kai but he won’t take my calls. Are you with him?”

“Not technically but I’m in his office. He’s talking with Beta Liam. Do you want me to give him the phone?”

“That would not be necessary dear. It’s evening and I just want to make sure both of you are home on time. Even if Kai is busy, drag him home. At his rate, he’s ready to work until dawn,” the woman sounded refined and elderly.

From the huge grin on Briella’s face, I could tell the woman on the phone with her was Kai’s mother.

“Okay, Mother. I’ll go get him now. We’ll be home shortly,”.

The call ended after another round of familiar niceties. I felt a longing in my bowels... I wish I had an easy life. Briella immediately turned to me, her tone was filled with pride as she began to arrange her bag.

“That was Kai’s mother. She wants us to come home,”.

“Oh!” I nodded, wondering what she expected me to say. “That’s nice,”.

“I mean,” Briella gushed on “I’ve been pleading to go back to my place but she’s insisting. She loves my presence and she wants me and Kai to get to know each other more,”.

I nodded, feeling miserable. Thankfully, the door of the waiting room opened again both Kai and Liam loomed at the door. Kai’s expression was as unreadable as ever but there was also a hint of frustration in the tightness of his jaw. Liam on the other hand offered me a reassuring smile.

Briella’s face lit up as she saw him. “I was about to come get you. I just got off the phone with Mom,” Kai arched a brow. “Your mom,” Briella sighed rolling her eyes “She wants us to come home ASAP,”.

“Let’s go!” Kai said, his tone leaving no room for argument as he turned on his heels and started walking away.
