Chapter 104: Chapter 104

Kevin POV

I leaned against the large oak tree at the entrance of the college gate, a sly smile tugging at my lips as I watched Lily walk across the relaxation park. She looked distracted, her shoulders were hunched and she had a troubled expression on her face. It was obvious that the tension between her and Kai was affecting her.

I’ve been observing them closely for a few days now. Though I and Kai didn’t see eye to eye on a lot of things and I generally keep out of his way, I’ve been able to gather information from a few Omegas working at the pack house.

They’d filled me in on how rocky the relationship between both mates have been in the recent times and that was what I was banking on. Now that the pieces were falling into place, everything was aligning well for me, making my job easier.

The mysterious she-wolf Kai had rescued at the borders of the pack hospital was hot topic these days. Everyone couldn’t stop talking about how much Kai seemed to care for the woman and how much she had Kai’s attention. Known for his coldness and an almost bland attitude to everything in life, it was refreshing to know that one woman could have such hold on him.

From the news I’ve gathered, it didn’t take much for me to realize the strain it had caused between Kai and Lily. And me, ever the opportunist saw this as the perfect time to stir the pot.

I pushed off the tree and approached Lily, pretending to stumble upon her by accident. “Lily,” I called out, putting a perfect smile on my face.

She stopped and turned to him, then attempted a smile that didn’t reach her eyes. “Oh, Kevin. Hi,”

I studied her for a moment, pretending to be concerned. “Are you alright?” I asked “You seem troubled, like you’ve got the weight of the world on your shoulders. Everything okay?”

She hesitated a bit and I knew she was unsure of how much she could share with me. But I decided to play the good friend, even if it was way off my personality.

“I’m fine,” she finally said brushing off my concern. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞

Without waiting for her permission, I took her hand and steered her to one of the stone benches at the corner then took up the step beside her.

“Is this about Kai?” I started, ignoring the way she flinched and dipped her head in shame. “I’ve heard a lot of things, rumors mostly but I’ve ignored them all but I couldn’t help but notice things seem a little ... strained between you two lately.”

She stiffened slightly but said nothing, her silence confirming what I need to know. I tilted my head, feigning sympathy.

“It’s about the she-wolf Kai found, isn’t it?” I continued. “You know, I’ve been around longer than most. I remember when Kai used to disappear for months at a time.”

Her attention snapped to me fully. “What do you mean?”

“Oh,” I feigned reluctance. “Perhaps I shouldn’t say anything. It’s not my place...”

“Please,” she whispered, her eyes were glistening with unshed tears. “I need to know.”

I leaned closer, lowering my voice conspiratorially. “Well, there were rumors back then. About a woman he was seeing secretly. Someone his parents didn’t approve of,” I paused for effect. “The timing of jhis disappearances... they kept coinciding with the Full Moon Festivals. Just like when this mysterious she-wolf appeared.”

I watched the pain flash across Lily’s face, and satisfaction coursed through me. Seeds of doubt, once planted, grew like weeds.

“But that’s just pack gossip,” I added quickly, playing the concerned friend perfectly. “And just to add, I’ve known Kai long enough to know when something’s bothering him. And it’s pretty clear that this whole situation with the she-wolf in the hospital is affecting him – and you.”

Her eyes flickered with uncertainty. She opened her mouth as if to respond but hesitated. Immediately, I took advantage of the pause.

“Has Kai told you anything about her?” I asked casually.

“Not much,” she reluctantly admitted.

I nodded as if I had expected that. “I’m not surprised. Kai’s always been tight-lipped about personal matters. But I can’t help wondering if...” I trailed off, letting the implication hand in the air.

“If what?” she pressed.

I sighed, making a big production as if I didn’t want to speak. “Well, I don’t want to stir up unnecessary drama, but there’s a chance that this she-wolf might be the same woman he dated a while back. The woman he used to travel out of the pack to go meet.”

“You think she’s, his ex? He never mentioned anything about an ex?” she queried with a frown on her face.

I shrugged. “Men don’t say these things you know. But come to think of it, it’s not like Kai to neglect someone he cares about unless he’s dealing with something major. Don’t you think?”

I could practically hear the wheels in her brain turning.

When she finally spoke, there was sadness in her eyes. “I think she’s his ex too and he still have feeling for her.”

“I’m just saying,” I added. “It wouldn’t hurt to keep your eyes open. Sometimes, the truth isn’t what we want it to be, but it’s better to know than to be left in the dark.”

She nodded slowly. I could see she was struggling with what to say. I offered her a reassuring smile, patting her arms comfortingly.

“If you ever need someone to talk to, I’m here,” I said before walking away, leaving her with a head full of doubts.

Later that night, in my room, I pulled out my encrypted phone and dialed a number. My contact at Golden Moon Pack would be very interested in this new development. The line clicked and a gravelly voice answered.

“What is it?” the voice at the other end said gravelly.

I rolled my eyes. “I’ve got news that might interest you. The mate bond is weakening. She’s vulnerable. The perfect time to make a move for what we discussed.”

There was another pause on the other end. “What kind of issues?”

I lean ed. Ack in my chair savoring the moment. “Let’s just say she’s feeling a bit neglected. Kai’s been spending all his time with a certain she-wolf at the hospital and Lily’s left wondering where she stands. She’s not at her best and if there’s ever a chance to get to her, it’s now.”

The voice on the other end chuckled darkly. “Interesting. Are you sure? We can’t afford mistakes.”

“She’s alone most of the time now. Kai’s distracted with the hospital patient. His sister Celeste is too busy with preparing for exams. She shuttles between the pack house and her school. With Kai barely around, there’s no one paying attention to her. It wouldn’t take much to catch her off guard.”

“What about pack security?”

“Leave that to me. I’ll make sure the patrols are thin where you need them to be. Just be ready.”

“Good,” the voice said. “You’ve done well, Kevin. Keep feeding me with updates.”

My smirk widened. “I’ll be in touch.”

I ended the call, satisfaction coursing through my veins as I put away the phone. The plan was working perfectly. Not only would this sow more discord between Kai and Lily, but it would create an opening for my anonymous ally to strike.

I didn’t care about the reason behind the ally’s interest in Lily. All I cared about was the aftermath. When Lily would be gone, Kai would be devasted, and in the chaos that will follow...

Well, someone would need to step up and lead the pack.

Someone like me.

So, let Lily drown in her doubts and fears and let Kai obsess over his mysterious patient. By the time anyone realized what was happening, it would be too late.
