Chapter 73: Hunter’s true colors

Hunter looked at him with a neutral face.

"Ethan... do you still care about him?" he asked the same question again

Lucian’s throat tightened.

"You... might be mistaken?" he answered, forcing out a faint scoff that didn’t quite reach his eyes.

"Mistaken?" Hunter repeated softly.

He took a step closer.

"Then why did you race to his house when you heard he wasn’t coming?" His voice remained calm, but there was something simmering beneath it. "Even if you claim it was for the team, I saw the way you looked at him. Even when you thought no one was watching."

Another step.

"That really makes me mad."

Lucian instinctively stepped back ,once, twice ,until his shoulders met the cold wall behind him.

Hunter closed the distance completely.

He planted one hand beside Lucian’s head, blocking him in. The other hovered near his waist before sliding upward ,slow, deliberate , until his fingers brushed the side of Lucian’s neck.

"What do you see in him anyway?" Hunter murmured, his face inches away now. "Is it his pheromones? His infuriating smile? His manipulative words?"

The air shifted.

Lucian’s breath hitched.

The scent in the room thickened , sharp, overwhelming. Hunter’s pheromones were spiraling out of control, heavy with possessiveness and something far more dangerous.

Lucian’s pulse pounded.

Is he getting into a rut right now?

No... no, this is bad.

"Hunter, please stop," Lucian said, his voice lower now , strained.

Hunter’s fingers tightened slightly against his neck, not enough to hurt , but enough to make a point.

"What do you really see in him," Hunter whispered, and this time his composure cracked, "that you can’t see in m—"

He stopped himself.

The unfinished word hung between them like a confession he refused to make.

His breathing grew uneven. His pupils dilated. The scent grew thicker ,raw instinct battling whatever restraint he still had left.

Lucian’s hands came up, gripping Hunter’s wrists.

"Hunter, please stop," he repeated, firmer this time. "We are brothers."

The word felt heavy.

"And you’re getting married soon," Lucian continued, forcing himself to meet Hunter’s eyes. "Please... snap out of it."

The distance between them felt wider now than the entire corridor outside.

Two brothers.

Bound by blood.

Pulled apart by something neither of them dared to name

Just then, Tracy passed by the corridor.

She wasn’t trying to eavesdrop.

She was just heading back to her car when movement through the slightly uncovered window caught her eye.

She paused.

’Hmmm is Lucian still around ?’ She thought as she looked at the window

Inside, Hunter had Lucian pinned against the wall , one hand braced beside his head, their bodies close enough that there was barely space between them. From her angle, with the lighting dim and their faces only inches apart...

It looked like they were kissing.

Her eyes widened.

Her breath caught.

"What...?"

Before she could process it—

A hand suddenly clamped over her mouth.

Tracy let out a muffled gasp as she was yanked backward into the shadow of the corridor.

"Say a word to anyone," a voice whispered coldly against her ear, "and you will regret that."

Her entire body went rigid.

Slowly, trembling, she lifted her eyes to the window’s reflection beside them.

And froze.

Ethan?

He was right behind her , expression unreadable, eyes dark. His hand remained firmly over her mouth, but his gaze shifted past her shoulder, toward the window.

Toward them.

Hunter still had Lucian pinned in the same position.

From the outside, it was an intimate silhouette.

Ethan’s jaw clenched so tightly a muscle ticked.

For a second , just one second ,something dangerous flickered in his eyes.

Then it was gone.

He removed his hand from Tracy’s mouth but immediately grabbed her wrist instead.

"Move," he said quietly.

Not loud.

Not angry.

Just controlled.

Which was worse.

He pulled her away from the window before she could look again, his grip firm but not bruising. His pace was fast ,sharp , as though the corridor itself had become suffocating.

Tracy stumbled slightly to keep up.

"E-Ethan— I wasn’t—"

"Don’t," he cut in.

He didn’t look at her.

Didn’t slow down.

Behind them, the closed door concealed everything.

But the image was already burned into his mind.

Hunter’s body trapping Lucian.

Lucian not pushing him away.

Ethan’s grip tightened unconsciously. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶

And for the first time, it wasn’t confusion that settled in his chest.

It was something far uglier.

Jealousy.

Back in the room, neither Hunter nor Lucian noticed the storm forming outside those walls.

Hunter leaned in again.

Lucian’s breath stilled.

For a second ,just a second , he closed his eyes.

Hunter paused when he saw that.

Instead of closing the distance, he shifted slightly and lowered his mouth near Lucian’s ear.

"What did you expect me to do just now?" he whispered.

Lucian’s eyes slowly opened.

Hunter pulled back just enough to look at him properly, and this time there was no haze of instinct ,only something sharp and deliberate.

"I can see why Ethan hangs around you," Hunter continued, voice cooling. "You’re always convenient. You always go along with everything."

Lucian’s heart dropped.

What the hell is Hunter talking about?

Each word landed heavier than the last.

"Did you really think I changed?" Hunter let out a faint, humorless scoff. "Always so easygoing. So accommodating."

His gaze hardened.

"No, Lucian. I only satisfied myself because you were just a scentless omega. I got curious about what you’d be like." His lips curled slightly. "And honestly? It wasn’t anything special."

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Hunter stepped back, creating distance where there had been heat moments ago.

"I joined the Regents to save the Dastins’ legacy," he continued coldly. "While you keep trying to drag it into the ground. That’s why your father needed someone else to handle the business. You’re clueless."

Lucian didn’t speak.

Couldn’t.

He just stared at Hunter as if he didn’t recognize the person standing in front of him.

Ofcourse ,how could I forgot we were enemies to begin with? I got carried away with these pretence

The words cut deeper than any physical blow could have.

His vision blurred.

Tears welled despite his effort to hold them back.

"But at least one thing hasn’t changed about you," Hunter added, turning toward the door. "You’ll always bend for every alpha who gives you attention."

Lucian’s fingers curled into fists at his sides.

Still, no words came.

Hunter paused with his hand on the door handle.

Without turning around, he said in Spanish, voice low and merciless:

"Quizás el único uso que tienes es abrir las piernas."

(Maybe the only use you have is spreading your legs.)

The door slammed shut.

Lucian flinched at the sound.

The room felt unbearably quiet afterward.

Slowly, a single tear slipped down his cheek.

He didn’t wipe it away.

For the first time, the space felt colder than any winter night.
