Chapter 100: Chapter 15 Why Believe in Witches_2

She sighed.

"After the Creation Witch died, Doma City, where belief in the Creation Witch was the mainstream, faced the cruelest punishment: They weren’t allowed to die, weren’t allowed to live, and weren’t allowed to leave Doma City."

"Is this... really that cruel?" Laila suddenly asked a question, then saw the puzzled look in the nun’s eyes, as if questioning her about why it wouldn’t be cruel.

She fell silent for a moment, then corrected herself:

"Yes, it is indeed extremely cruel."

"So the residents of Doma City harbor a lot of malice towards us," the nun nodded gravely and explained to everyone.

"Unless we can think of a way to break the seal, the residents of Doma City will keep attacking us until we’re exhausted."

"Then we just need to get the meteorite before we run out of strength, right?" A handsome Knight wielding dual guns stepped forward, proudly saying with a smirk:

"These living corpses and ghosts don’t pose much of a threat."

"You’re not wrong there." Laila got up, supporting herself on her knees, and explained to everyone present, "But our main goal is to study Doma City, to see if we can find something even more valuable."

"Something more valuable?" The dual-gun Knight was stunned for a moment. What in this city could be more valuable than the Magic Queen’s meteorite?

Laila didn’t explain, simply shook her head, and left with the team of Knights and students, to explore deeper into the city’s secrets.

Since this city’s mainstream belief was in the Creation Witch, it must have a close connection with her, and perhaps it might contain research manuscripts left by the Creation Witch.

That value would far surpass the Magic Queen’s meteorite.

After all, knowledge is priceless.

Meanwhile:

In the castle:

"Are we... really going to do this?" The Ghostly Queen bit her lower lip, looking at the silver-clad knight in front of her, her expression very reluctant.

In response, Xi Mu nodded as if it were to be expected:

"Since you want to repent, then it must be thorough. Without personally destroying the statue of the Creation Witch, how can you prove the sincerity of your repentance?"

"..."

The Ghostly Queen fell silent for a long time, then slowly said, "I... understand."

Now they had no choice; to obtain relief, they had to abandon everything from the past, and destroying the statue of the Creation Witch was a form of penance.

The boss... looks kind of bad here.

Jed, at the entrance, watched the scene with a somewhat complicated expression.

Even though the boss was trying to save the city, his actions seemed like those of a great villain, bullying the city’s pitiful queen.

Could it be the influence of Sulter’s flame, making the boss’s good deeds seem... villainous?

Or maybe she was thinking too much.

"Boss, lingering here for too long is also dangerous," Jed suddenly spoke up, "We’re not the only ones aiming for the meteorite."

"Don’t worry, I’ll protect you," the Ghostly Queen said nonchalantly, and then snapped her fingers, "I’ve arranged a large number of guards around the castle."

She assured them this way.

"As long as you stay within the castle, no one can harm you."

"I hope so," Xi Mu nodded, seemingly not very trusting of the Ghostly Queen’s promise.

If the Ghostly Queen were still alive, according to the official description, she would be powerful enough to easily kill all invaders.

But the current Ghostly Queen was not a living being, nor could she use the magic left by the Creation Witch, and her power had been epicly diminished.

And those guards were likewise; compared to the power they possessed in life, they were now merely more difficult to kill.

Stopping the invaders, extremely difficult.

...

...

After a while:

"Boom!" A deafening explosion sounded, and the gates of the castle collapsed, as the invading army stormed into the castle.

Xi Mu turned his head expressionlessly and looked at the Ghostly Queen, whose face was creased with awkwardness. The two locked eyes for a moment.

"Are you sure you can protect us?"

"..."

The Ghostly Queen went silent for a moment, squeezing out a smile, "Don’t worry, the guards inside the castle are stronger, they may not come here."

Though she said this, she unconsciously looked out the window, as if searching for an escape route.

Seeing this, Jed couldn’t help but twitch his lips and, holding his forehead, said, "If you’re thinking of running, don’t delay for too long, or we might not be able to escape."

By now, she had seen through the Ghostly Queen’s lack of confidence and guessed that the invaders would soon reach them.

By then, it would not be easy to keep the falling star safe.

"Run away, huh... I used to crush those little ones with a finger," the Ghostly Queen huffed. Following that, she heard Jed’s challenging question.

"And now?"

The atmosphere grew silent again.

The Ghostly Queen’s expression stiffened, her current strength was still substantial, allowing her to exert her unique abilities.

But that was just the extent of it.

"How about... a strategic retreat?" Xi Mu suggested, "After all, both zombies and ghosts possess immortality, so as long as we can detain them, we can take the opportunity to complete the redemption ceremony."

The Ghostly Queen answered promptly, "Possible."

With that, she moved to the corner of the room, pushed aside the painting hanging on the wall, and revealed a large hole. Then, she gestured for Xi Mu and Jed to follow.

"Come with me."

Jed: "..."

It felt like the Ghostly Queen had been anticipating their suggestion of a strategic retreat.

Without further thought,

"Let’s go." Xi Mu grabbed Jed by the wrist, plunged into the hole behind the painting, and retreated strategically with the Ghostly Queen.

After passing through the damp tunnels, the three of them had stealthily reached the outside of the castle and hid in a civilian’s house.

"Next, we’ll smash all of the Creation Witch’s statues." Xi Mu pointed to the Ghostly Queen next to him, "You’ll do it personally."

"Understood." The Ghostly Queen nodded, suppressing the sadness in her eyes. She had no choice but to trample upon past beliefs to please... All Gods, or else her people would never have the chance to be reborn.

"Why did you worship the Creation Witch in the first place?" Jed couldn’t help but voice the question that had been in his mind. Everyone knew that All Gods were the mainstream of this world, and a Witch was nothing more than a human who had undergone a transformation into a god-like being.

The two couldn’t be compared.

In terms of quantity, there were more deities than Witches; in terms of ability, the deities had the nearly insurmountable God of Omniscience; when it came to immortality, for deities, the very concept of death was irrelevant.

Rationally, choosing All Gods seemed the superior option.

"Because she was too close. You could witness her might up close, watch how she tamed one great deity after another into pets." The Ghostly Queen explained softly, "The Creation Witch was a very gentle person; she cared for all life and was willing to extend a hand to those who had suffered."

She lowered her eyelids.

"Then you felt that All Gods were too distant, and the Witch too near, giving rise to the uncontrollable question: why worship All Gods, instead of a Witch who was both real and gentle?"

Jed: "..."

If she met a Witch who was not just close to godly but, rather... stronger than the usual deities, and this Witch was also incredibly kind and willing to help the weak,

then whether she would maintain her stance became blatantly clear – she would lean toward the visible, tangible Witch,

rather than pray to a divine statue.

"If you had truly interacted with the Creation Witch, you would feel the same way I do," the Ghostly Queen said, voicing her inner thoughts.

"If Witches were really as dangerous and deplorable as they say, there wouldn’t be so many followers of Witches in this world."

Jed nodded, feeling that there was some merit to what the Ghostly Queen was saying, but then she felt something was amiss and pursed her lips.

"Aren’t you completely devoid of any remorse then?"

"...Yes." The Ghostly Queen turned away reluctantly, admitting, "I do regret now, and I hope the Goddess of Life will forgive our sins."
