After Rebirth, I Replaced My Ex-Husband's True Love-Chapter 80: Silently Repeating His Name
"Miss Hathaway, is there something I did wrong? Why the sudden coldness?" Jasper Yates looked innocent.
I didn’t answer him. I just glanced at the time on my phone. It was already eleven o’clock at night, and the streets had noticeably fewer pedestrians, making it seem a bit desolate.
Henry Preston’s call came through again. As soon as I picked up and was about to speak, someone forcefully grabbed my hand. Jasper Yates dropped his earlier gentle demeanor and wore an angry expression, "Come with me!"
"Let go of me!" I was startled by Jasper Yates’ sudden change, which caught me off guard. His grip was strong, practically dragging me towards the car.
Occasionally, some passersby would go by, but none dared to help me. I had never encountered such a sudden incident before and felt a bit confused. Remembering the ongoing call, I shouted "Help" several times.
Jasper Yates shoved me into the car haphazardly and then snatched my phone away, "Behave!"
In the driver’s seat, Connor Hawthorne was smoking. He turned back to glance at me with a sinister smile, "Zoe Hathaway, surprised?"
"Connor, what are you trying to do?" I tried my best to stay calm.
"You wretched woman, you got me fired, Leah Lane broke up with me, leaving me with nothing. If I don’t teach you a lesson, I can’t swallow this rage. I’ve got nothing to lose. Tonight, I’ll make you pay tenfold!" Connor tossed the cigarette butt and drove off.
After who knows how long we drove, the car finally stopped at a dock. Connor and Jasper Yates took me to a container warehouse. I hadn’t even stood firm when a slap landed on my face. I felt a fiery pain, and my vision blurred a bit.
Jasper Yates found a chair, and Connor tied me tightly to it with rope. He kept cursing me with extremely harsh words.
"You have two choices now." Connor held up two fingers, "First, transfer five million to me as compensation. Second, we’ll rape you first, then kill you, and sink you into the sea."
Why did I never realize before just how cruel Connor could be?
"Connor, you’ve been with Leah Lane for so long, and she treated you so well. Don’t you think you should let her go? You made mistakes, so why blame me?" I stared at Connor.
"What I do is none of your business!" Connor seemed provoked by my words. He suddenly kicked me to the ground, and my head hit the ground hard, leaving me dizzy from the pain.
Jasper Yates didn’t seem to have a grudge against me. He probably was in it for the money and stopped Connor from hitting me again, "Forget it, her money is worth more than her life, hurry."
I was lifted up again. Connor pointed my phone at me and, after unlocking it with face recognition, opened the banking app, set the amount, and demanded my password.
"I can’t transfer that much at once; there’s a limit." I endured the headache and tried to delay, "I can only transfer fifty thousand per transaction."
I was lying to Connor; he had no idea about my card’s limit.
Sure enough, he adjusted the amount to fifty thousand, requiring the process to be repeated for each transfer.
"Transfer some to me too," Jasper Yates, looking greedy, said to Connor.
The two of them focused on transferring the money, occasionally accidentally turning off the screen and needing me to unlock it again. Every second they wasted was hope for me.
I stared at the warehouse door, my heart racing, silently chanting a name, Henry Preston.
That last call was my only hope. Connor had lost all sanity. Even if he got the money, he might still harm me.
Suddenly, I heard Azure Vaughn’s voice outside, "Miss Hathaway, Miss Hathaway?"
The voice was soft, seemingly on purpose.
"I’m here!!" I immediately clung to that hope with all my might and shouted back, but Connor and Jasper Yates were startled by the sudden turn of events and hurried over to cover my mouth.
The footsteps outside gradually approached, stopped at the door, and my tears welled up, hoping someone would kick open the door the next second.
Who knew the footsteps would pause for two seconds and then hurriedly run away? I vaguely heard Azure Vaughn’s voice, "Mr. Preston, Dr. Underwood, there’s no one here."
My pupils contracted, and I froze.
What was Azure saying?!
"Look elsewhere! What are you standing there for?" Henry Preston’s voice was a shout, filled with intense anger.
I wanted to call out, but my mouth was tightly covered, rendering me breathless, let alone able to shout.
I felt like a flame was gradually being extinguished in the darkness.
"Riiing!" A sharp phone ringtone suddenly sounded. Connor hurriedly fumbled in his pocket to hang up the phone, swearing, "Damn!"
I took the chance to scream, "Henry Preston!!"
Jasper Yates furiously slapped me. I was already on the verge of holding on, feeling a tearing pain at the corner of my mouth.
Just as they found cloth to gag me, the warehouse door was struck hard.
"Bang!"
The lock was forcefully smashed, and Henry Preston kicked the door open, standing in the doorway like a fierce deity, stopping for two seconds. When he saw me, the brutality on his face surged to an extreme. His eyes seemed bloodshot, and he charged in with the metal rod used to smash the door. Connor was so terrified his face went pale and before he could use me as a hostage, he was knocked to the ground by the rod.
Ivan Underwood followed, and seeing my condition, his usually calm face showed a dark anger.
He grabbed Jasper Yates by the collar with one hand, took off his glasses with the other, and punched hard.
"Ah!!" The violent and bloody scene made Azure Vaughn scream, retreating a few steps as if afraid the blood would splatter on her. Her falling tears were crystalline.
Jason Forrest and Silas Lockwood also arrived, dumbfounded by the scene.
Azure Vaughn ran to Jason Forrest and clung to his coat, her frightened demeanor heart-wrenching. Silas Lockwood seemed to have a bit of sense; he turned and instructed those he brought, "Hit them!"
A dozen men rushed in, taking over from Henry and Ivan, continuing to beat Connor and Jasper Yates.
Henry walked behind the chair and untied the rope. I wanted to say thank you, but my head hurt, and I fainted as soon as I tried to speak.
I don’t know how everything was handled afterward. When I woke up, I was in a hospital bed, the IV slowly dripping medicine into my veins.
Leah Lane was by the bedside, her eyes red. Seeing me wake up, she grabbed my hand and burst into tears, "Zoe, I’m sorry, it’s because of me that Connor took revenge on you, I’m so sorry..."
