After Rebirth, I Replaced My Ex-Husband's True Love-Chapter 79: Jasper Yates Is Hiding Something
"You son of a bitch, I’ve got a winning streak going, and you’re here to die?! Get lost! You’re making a fool of yourself!" Louis Lawson cursed and swore.
Susan Adler couldn’t get up for a long time, while the people in the mahjong parlor seemed used to it, watching silently without interfering.
With lingering fear, I quickly left with Crystal Dawson.
Lane was waiting for us in the car. Seeing my uneasy expression, he turned on his considerate mode, "Ma’am, are you feeling unwell?"
"It’s nothing, let’s head back to City A." I touched my neck, and Crystal checked it as well.
She frowned, "There’s a red ring around your neck, that woman was really ruthless!"
"What did she mean by that?" I was pondering something else, "Who bribed Louis Lawson?"
"I don’t know either, that Louis Lawson is a gambler; he must owe a ton of debt. Maybe someone paid it off for him on the condition he brings his wife back. Indeed, it takes a villain to deal with a villain," Crystal sighed.
"But who was it?" I was puzzled, "The detective I hired had also contacted Louis Lawson before, and Louis didn’t seem to care about his wife’s infidelity at all. Thinking about it now, maybe they planned it together. Susan was responsible for cozying up to wealthy men, then squeezing money to pay off Louis’s gambling debts, but she also wanted to seize the opportunity to divorce him."
Crystal pondered for a few seconds, her eyes widening gradually, "Could it be... Henry Preston?? Didn’t you see those photos at his place too?"
My heart skipped a beat, and I murmured, "Could it be that his photos came from here?"
That would be the negatives! I know him well; he does things cleanly and effectively. If he paid for them, he would want the best advantage. If they weren’t negatives, what use would they be to him?
As soon as I signed the divorce agreement, I’d get those photos.
By the time we returned to City A, it was already dark. Crystal and I found a place to eat, and during the meal, she called Henry Preston a jerk eighteen times.
"After the divorce, I’ll introduce you to some handsome guys, there are so many men in the world, we won’t let him ruin it for us!" Crystal comforted me, "I just can’t believe he and Azure Vaughn will last; he’ll regret it."
I sighed in my heart and felt a fleeting impulse to tell Crystal about my rebirth.
But this kind of thing seems too outlandish, and if by any chance it got to Henry Preston’s ears, who knows what would happen.
"It’s none of my concern anymore." I said while eating dessert, suppressing the waves in my heart, "But you have to remember what you said to me now, that you’ll introduce me to a few handsome guys."
"Sure, I promise to do what I say!" Crystal said, patting her chest.
After dinner, I had Lane drop Crystal off first, and then head back to Maplewood Gardens. As soon as I got home, a call from an unknown number came in. I answered it and heard Jasper Yates’s voice, "Finally got through; my previous number was restricted again."
Hearing his helpless tone, I couldn’t help but smile.
"Miss Hathaway, may I invite you to dinner?" Jasper Yates asked quite directly.
"I just finished dinner." I replied.
"Then let me take you to the movies." He insisted.
I rarely went out to the movies. Back in university, I would occasionally join Crystal and the others for a little fun, but most of the time, I’d watch films at the home theater.
Nonetheless, I had fantasized for a whole decade about going shopping, watching movies, and having candlelight dinners with Henry Preston.
No matter how ordinary the event, doing it with someone you like makes it completely different.
But unfortunately, I haven’t experienced that yet.
I hesitated for a moment, then agreed, "Okay, which theater?"
After getting the address, I had Lane take me to a shopping mall. The theater was on the fifth floor, and Jasper Yates was already waiting for me there.
He was dressed elegantly, wearing glasses, holding two cups of milk tea, and carrying a bag of popcorn. Seeing me, he smiled, "Miss Hathaway, over here!"
I walked over, and he handed me a cup of milk tea, "Matcha flavor, not sure if you like it. If you don’t, I’ll get you another one."
I shook my head, "No need, I like matcha flavor."
Jasper Yates chose a romantic comedy. I had no objections. When it started, we found our seats and sat down. He whispered, "Drink the milk tea while it’s hot to warm up your stomach."
"Okay." I took a sip of the milk tea.
The movie was actually quite good, full of laughs. I thought I might fall asleep, but by the end, I was laughing so hard I cried.
Because my phone was on silent, I only noticed the missed call from Henry Preston after leaving the cinema.
I called back, but he was on another call. I didn’t pay further attention and just followed Jasper Yates out of the mall - he said he wanted to take me for a late-night snack.
"I know a BBQ place that’s really good, and they have soju. Can you drink a little alcohol?" Jasper Yates asked as we walked.
"I can, but not too much." I replied, as drinking too much and causing a scene would be embarrassing.
Outside the mall, the cold wind was whistling, yet it was still bustling with people. Jasper Yates mentioned a BBQ place just a short alley away, so we braved the cold wind to our destination, with him constantly finding topics to talk about along the way, to which I responded now and then.
He was actually very good at conversations, always able to find topics that interest me, and he maintained a gentlemanly demeanor throughout.
Once at the BBQ restaurant, we ate and drank happily. Unlike Joel Sutton, Jasper Yates was more mature, and I felt a sense of camaraderie when discussing certain topics with him.
I don’t like to owe people, so I took the opportunity when I excused myself to the restroom to head to the counter to settle the bill.
Jasper Yates noticed almost immediately and dashed over, pulling out his phone and saying, "I’ll pay!"
I inadvertently glanced at his phone screen and couldn’t help frowning slightly. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶
"All done, I’ll take you back." Jasper Yates said after paying, his car was parked not too far away.
"No need, I have a friend eating nearby as well, and I’ve asked them to pick me up." I politely declined.
"It’s okay, don’t trouble others; it’s the same if I take you." Jasper Yates looked at me earnestly, "Miss Hathaway, do you believe in love at first sight?"
I showed a faint smile, "I do, but I believe more in the insidiousness of the human heart."
When Jasper Yates was paying and opened his WeChat, if I saw correctly, his latest contact had the note for Connor Hawthorne.
There are many people with the same name in the world, but I don’t believe the ’Connor Hawthorne’ on Jasper Yates’s phone is someone else.
I recalled Leah Lane’s words, that Connor blamed me for their breakup, advising me to be careful of revenge.
I was careless, thinking Connor would personally take action against me, but I didn’t expect him to find an accomplice to approach me. For what, I do not know.
