Chapter 73: Chapter 73: He Agreed to the Divorce

He stood by the bed, his hands in his pants pockets. His handsome and indifferent face was shrouded in the light, quietly watching me.

After a long while, he replied, "I don’t know."

"Hahaha..." I was taken aback, then burst into uncontrolled laughter, which echoed in the bedroom. Gradually, I felt the corners of my eyes wet, and my breathing became labored.

It was too funny. I wiped the tears of laughter from my eyes, then looked up at him, "I really didn’t expect you to answer like that. A suitor, a sycophant, a wife in name, a tool for marriage alliances— so many identities, and you couldn’t think of a single one?"

"Henry, you’re really selfish. If you don’t love me, let me go and pursue the woman you truly like. With your current status and position, what does it matter if you lose a bit of my family’s support? I’ve loved you for ten years; how many decades does one have in a lifetime? And during the most beautiful years of a woman’s youth! Even if you don’t like me, at least consider the ten years of youth, and let me leave with some dignity. Human hearts are made of flesh, yet yours is a malignant tumor, itching to poison me to death!"

The more I spoke, the more agitated I became. Since my rebirth, I’ve been restraining myself, seeking self-liberation, hoping to leave this hopeless marriage as soon as possible, to avoid another round of torment.

In the end, I couldn’t even leave, and I had to watch as things spiraled more and more out of control; I felt like a failure.

Suddenly, I grabbed a book from the bedside and threw it at Henry’s face. He didn’t dodge; his face just grew darker, as if holding back his fury.

I picked up a pillow, stood on the bed, and started hitting him hard, not stopping my tirade, "Henry, you’re a bastard! You’ll die a terrible death! You’ve been worried about Walter Vaughn’s illness for days, right? You left me at your house for three or four days, do you remember to pick me up? Since you love Azure so much, why waste my time? Divorce! I want a divorce!!"

This shrew-like state brought me back to my past life.

Back then, I was desperately holding on to Henry, refusing to agree to a divorce no matter what.

"Enough!" Henry finally lost his temper after my beating. He snatched the pillow from my hand and tossed it to the floor, his eyes somewhat bloodshot, filled with terrifying anger, "You want a divorce? Then let’s divorce, I’ll have the divorce papers drawn up for you!"

With that, he stormed out of the bedroom.

I did want a divorce, but truly hearing Henry agree left a sudden emptiness in my heart, and the feeling of reluctance awoke once again. I tried hard to suppress it for a long time, slowly calming down.

Isn’t this why I was reborn? To divorce gracefully, to bless others, and to set myself free.

I took a deep breath, lay back in bed, and slept, trying to empty my mind. Otherwise, the emotional turbulence would lead to an endocrine imbalance, which wasn’t worth it.

The next day when I went to the hospital, Walter Vaughn’s room was already empty.

He must have been moved to another room; Henry has always acted quickly.

"Zoe, you don’t need to come here every day; there are nurses here, don’t worry," my mom advised me as she put down her phone when I arrived.

"Worry or not, I have to come to see you, since you’re my mom, right?" I sat down, holding my mom’s hand. I wanted to talk to her about my impending divorce but didn’t know where to start.

My mom smiled, "My daughter is truly filial. If only you could let me hold a grandchild sooner, that would be even better!"

This response made me more hesitant. Once I divorce Henry, who knows which year of the monkey or horse it would be before my mom could hold a grandchild.

And I’m a bit worried that my mom and dad would persuade me not to divorce. Even though they previously had a bad impression of Henry and thought I was too humble, now that things are the way they are, they might hope I endure this marriage.

The older generation’s views on marriage are more traditional, liking to endure and make do for another few years.

"Let’s let nature take its course." I swallowed the words on the tip of my tongue and gave a vague answer.

"Your in-laws must also hope you two have a child soon." My mom continued to mutter, "Both you and Henry are only children, so it can be a bit lonely. If you have two kids, that would be great. If your in-laws or I get bored, we can each take one."

"Mom, are you treating having grandchildren like a pastime?" I couldn’t help but laugh; she even considered my mother-in-law’s situation.

My mom chuckled, "Isn’t that so? When your grandma was bored at home, I’d send you over to bother her, and she was very happy!"

The two of us chatted about trivial stuff in the hospital room, and the conversation gradually drifted to Susan Adler. Knowing that I had hired a private detective to investigate, she was very supportive.

With extraordinary people, you need extraordinary measures.

It was noon when I left the room, just as others were having lunch. There was a crowd by the elevator. Leaning on my slender frame, I squeezed into the inner corner.

As the elevator descended two floors, I heard a familiar voice, "Dr. Underwood, thank you for my dad’s surgery. You’ve been a great help these days. If you have time, let me treat you to a meal."

Azure and Ivan Underwood were standing just ahead of me, separated by two or three people.

She was engrossed in talking with Ivan, not noticing me in the corner. Instead, Ivan saw me at a glance and greeted me with his eyes.

"What I’ve done is within my duty; you don’t need to worry about it," Ivan’s cool voice echoed in the elevator.

"You’re the most responsible doctor I’ve seen, and very meticulous. I just wanted to thank you." Azure stood shoulder to shoulder with Ivan, squeezed close together with no space between. When she spoke, she slightly tilted her head, attentively looking at Ivan.

"No need. Besides, the one you should thank the most isn’t me," Ivan maintained a detached tone.

I couldn’t help wondering, does he not fall for Azure’s charms? He seemed like an unromantic person.

Amid my chaotic thoughts, the elevator slowly made its way to the first floor. Azure left with the crowd to the cafeteria for lunch, while Ivan and I did not exit, continuing down to the B1 parking level.

When it was just the two of us in the elevator, and we reached the B1 level, he said to me, "Lost in thought? Aren’t you going out?"

I snapped back to reality, realizing that his hand had been holding the ’Open Door’ button all along.

"Thanks!" I quickly expressed my gratitude and walked out of the elevator, with Ivan right behind me.

"Want to grab lunch together?" As I was about to get in my car, Ivan surprisingly invited me, "Silas Lockwood and Jason Forrest have reserved a spot. That restaurant has a great menu."

Unbelievable, why didn’t he accept Azure’s invitation but instead asked me out?

Besides, I’m not familiar with Silas Lockwood and Jason Forrest. To them, I’d be an obstacle in the way of Henry’s happiness, and using my family’s connections for marriage was my fault from the start.

I didn’t want to go, so I declined.
