Chapter 38: Chapter 38: Eliza Sutton Was Kidnapped

Mrs. Lockwood held Eliza Sutton’s hand. "Eliza, I know you’ve been wronged, but you have to believe this is only temporary. Think about it—Shane woke up even after being comatose, so a small issue in *that* department can be sorted out quickly. When the time comes, he’ll definitely make it up to you tenfold."

As she spoke, she pressed a black card into Eliza Sutton’s palm. "Here, take this. Go buy yourself something nice after work."

Eliza Sutton: "..."

’Does she just throw money at every problem?’ 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂

Eliza Sutton refused. "Mom, I don’t need money."

"Just because you don’t need it doesn’t mean you can’t take it, does it? Go on, take it. Or I’ll be upset."

Seeing she couldn’t refuse, Eliza Sutton had no choice but to accept it. "Thank you, Mom."

Mrs. Lockwood’s smile smoothed the lines around her eyes. "Just live a good life with Shane. Mom won’t treat you unfairly."

Mrs. Lockwood then left with Mrs. Chandler.

Eliza Sutton handed the card to Shane Lockwood. "President Lockwood, this is for you."

"Keep it." Shane Lockwood glanced at it and said coolly, "Consider it payment for your dedicated care of Emmett Lockwood."

Eliza Sutton knew exactly what Shane Lockwood meant and couldn’t help but say, "I take care of Emmett because he’s well-behaved and lovable."

’It’s not for the money.’

But the words died on her lips. ’What’s the point of explaining? It would only make Shane Lockwood think I have ulterior motives.’

Besides, for someone like Shane Lockwood, any problem that could be solved with money wasn’t a problem at all.

"Mr. Lockwood, are you planning to rest at home or go to the office?"

"To the office."

"Understood."

Eliza Sutton wasn’t surprised at all. ’Even though Shane Lockwood, this domineering CEO, can be a bit narcissistic at times, his work ethic is quite commendable.’

When Eliza Sutton arrived at the Lockwood Design Department, she ran into Dulcie Vaughn.

"Miss Vaughn," Eliza Sutton greeted her politely.

But Dulcie Vaughn just glanced at her and left without a word.

Eliza Sutton was a bit surprised.

She had just returned to her desk when Crystal Harrison came over.

Crystal Harrison leaned in and whispered in her ear, "Eliza Sutton, you’ve really pissed off Miss Vaughn this time!"

Eliza Sutton was bewildered. "What happened?"

"You don’t know yet? Manager Preston just announced that at the regular meeting in a bit, he’s going to name you Chief Designer! Miss Vaughn struggled at Lockwood Group for nine years to get that position. You’ve only been here a few days! How can she be happy when you’ve snagged that spot in just a week? And it’s not just her, there are others too."

Crystal Harrison listed several names. "Reina Miles left, so her position opened up. They were all the most promising candidates to move up, but now you’ve taken the spot. Do you think they’re happy about that?"

Crystal Harrison looked at Eliza Sutton with pity. "Eliza, you’ve really made enemies everywhere this time. Life here is going to be tough for you from now on."

Eliza Sutton hadn’t expected this turn of events either. "Well, that’s a shame."

She had originally planned to quietly spend a few months at Lockwood Group and resign after her divorce from Shane Lockwood, but now that seemed like a pipe dream.

Crystal Harrison urged her, "What are you spacing out for? Hurry up and go tell Manager Preston you don’t want to be the Chief Designer."

Eliza Sutton said, "Do you think Manager Preston will change his mind easily?"

"No."

"Right. Then I won’t waste my energy."

"But... but if this appointment really goes through, you’ll be ostracized."

Eliza Sutton looked at Crystal Harrison and asked, "Will you ostracize me?"

Crystal Harrison shook her head. "No, we’re friends."

"Then it’s not being ostracized." Eliza Sutton smiled at Crystal Harrison. "Come on, let’s get to work."

Eliza Sutton didn’t go to turn down the Chief Designer position. The news spread through the design department in an instant. Everyone started looking at Eliza Sutton with hostility and began to ostracize her. Even Crystal Harrison, who was close to her, got caught in the crossfire.

Eliza Sutton didn’t care about these petty tricks, but life became difficult for Crystal Harrison.

She would often return to her desk fuming.

Eliza Sutton suggested, "Why don’t you distance yourself from me? That way, they won’t take their anger out on you."

"No way!" Crystal Harrison was stubborn. "They want me to stay away from you, so I should just stay away? That would make me a pushover. I’m going to stick even closer to you."

Crystal Harrison was true to her word, even swapping desks with a colleague to be next to her.

Eliza Sutton felt helpless but didn’t say anything.

In the afternoon, Eliza Sutton received a call from Woody.

"Boss, we’ve got news on Theo. My men just reported that he appeared at the Angel Orphanage three years ago."

Eliza Sutton immediately requested time off and drove to the Angel Orphanage.

She got out of the car and stared at the Angel Orphanage before her.

The orphanage was dilapidated. The sign on the gate was half-broken, the main gate was covered in rust, and the entrance was blanketed with fallen leaves.

Eliza Sutton was puzzled. This orphanage didn’t look like it was in normal operation at all.

Just as Eliza Sutton was about to call Woody to ask, the main gate suddenly swung open, and a limping man walked out.

"Are you here looking for a child?"

"How did you know?"

The limping man chuckled. "Looking at you, you’re well-dressed, not too old, and standing at the orphanage gate with such a somber expression. Anyone who shows up at an orphanage gate looking like that is always here to find a child."

Eliza Sutton said nothing.

"Come on in. There aren’t many children left here. Let’s see if you’re lucky enough to find the child you threw away."

’The child you threw away...’

Those few simple words pierced Eliza Sutton’s heart like a steel knife.

She wanted to say that she had never abandoned her child, but such an explanation would be useless. So she silently followed the man inside.

The inside of the orphanage was even more barren and dilapidated, exuding desolation with no sign of life.

Eliza Sutton frowned. "Where are the children? You can bring them out. I’ll wait here."

"Right here? You’re a cruel one. You’ve come all this way, and you don’t even want to go inside to see the children?" the limping man accused her.

But Eliza Sutton said, "I have something else to attend to. I’ll come back to look next time."

Before she could even finish her sentence, she had already turned around.

Seeing that Eliza Sutton was about to leave, the limping man’s expression changed abruptly.

He immediately chased after Eliza Sutton, his nimble movements showing no sign of a limp.

As he chased her, he shouted, "What are you all standing around for? Get out here and grab her!"

Two more men quickly came out. One of them held a spray can and sprayed it forcefully at her face.

Eliza Sutton managed a few more steps before collapsing to the ground, unconscious.

The limping man caught up, looked down at Eliza Sutton, and said hatefully, "This woman is damn sharp. She almost got away."

A van drove in. They abducted Eliza Sutton, put her in the vehicle, and quickly disappeared.

「The Lockwood Estate.」

Hearing the sound of a car, Emmett Lockwood immediately jumped off the sofa and ran toward the entryway.

"Mommy!"

He called out sweetly, but when he saw it was Shane Lockwood who walked in, his little face instantly fell.

"Daddy, how come it’s you?"

Shane Lockwood’s gaze swept over him. "If not me, then who?"

"Mommy." Emmett Lockwood suddenly became wary. "Daddy, are you forbidding Mommy from seeing me again?"
