After Prison I Rushed into Marriage with a Comatose Tycoon-Chapter 24: Stand Steady, It Would Be Bad to Get Hurt
"Emmett Lockwood!"
Shane Lockwood’s face darkened, his voice cold. "Look at you! You don’t look anything like a young master of the Lockwood family!"
"What young master? You think I care about that? I’m going to find Mom right now and have her take me away! From now on, it’ll just be the two of us. We don’t need you anymore!"
As Emmett spoke, he tried to run off, but Shane, with a swift hand, grabbed him by the collar and yanked him back.
"I see you’re getting more and more insolent!"
"Let me go! I want to find my mom!"
Shane’s expression was exceptionally ugly. With a flick of his wrist, he tossed Emmett into Erik Irvine’s arms. "Take him back to Valdoran. He’s not to come out without my permission!"
Erik Irvine hastily agreed. By the time he looked up again, Shane had already wheeled himself away.
"Let me go! Mr. Irvine, please let me go, okay? I want to see my mom." Emmett’s eyes were red-rimmed as he looked at Erik Irvine pitifully.
Erik almost gave in, but he hardened his heart and tried to reason with the boy. "President Lockwood is already angry, so don’t cause any more trouble. If he gets the idea that the Mistress put you up to all this crying and fussing, things will get very difficult for her."p>Emmett stared at Erik in disbelief. "He’d take it out on Mom?"
Erik felt a pang of guilt. ’A man of President Lockwood’s stature wouldn’t really blame Eliza Sutton for a child’s endless tantrum.’ But to quiet Emmett down, he nodded anyway.
"Young Master, for the Mistress’s sake, just behave yourself."
Emmett’s little head drooped, looking especially pitiful.
...
Eliza Sutton left in a hurry. To prevent Emmett from seeing her, she jogged all the way from the Lockwood Estate.
Only after she was out the main gate did she realize she had miscalculated.
The Lockwood Estate occupied an entire mountain, a vast area that was always closed off to outsiders. Thinking about the distance from the Lockwood gate to the main road, Eliza had no desire to walk it at all.
Just as she was about to call the gatehouse and ask them to arrange a driver for her, a black Bugatti Veyron pulled up beside her.
Eliza instinctively turned to look, just as the car window rolled down, revealing a handsome face.
It was Shane Lockwood.
"Get in."
Without a second word, Eliza got into the car.
The cool air from the car instantly enveloped her, and only then did Eliza feel like she had come back to life.
She thanked him with great sincerity, "Mr. Lockwood, thank you for giving me a ride. You’re a really good person."
Shane Lockwood remained noncommittal, clearly having no intention of making small talk.
Eliza quieted down as well. She had no intention of being annoying.
Suddenly, Shane spoke. "The man you were with this afternoon isn’t suitable for you."
"Huh?" Eliza looked completely baffled.
"That Sid Lane is a good-for-nothing. He’s been running with the wrong crowd since he was a kid and can’t give you a stable life. It wasn’t easy for you to get to where you are today; you should cherish it."
Eliza finally understood what Shane meant. She couldn’t help but laugh, and when she spoke again, her tone was sharp. "Then who does Mr. Lockwood think is suitable for me? It’s not you, is it? No, wait, you already warned me not to have any fantasies about you. You can rest assured on that front. A criminal like me knows her place."
Shane turned his gaze toward her.
Eliza was very beautiful. She had an oval face, dark brows, long lashes, and delicate, rosy, diamond-shaped lips. The dim light from the roadside streamed in, casting a glow on her face that made her appear even more gentle. And yet, her sparkling almond-shaped eyes held the sharpness of a sword and the aggression of a wild beast.
He had been awake for several days now, but this was the first time he had seen Eliza like this.
Shane’s brows furrowed slightly, but he wasn’t angry. "If my words made you uncomfortable, I apologize. I was just reminding you. If you insist on being with him, that’s your choice. And as for being a criminal... I think you care more about that than I do."
Eliza also realized her reaction had been too extreme. She sat up straight, lowered her head slightly, and adopted a chastened expression. "I’m sorry, I was too sensitive. I know you meant well. Also, Woody and I are just friends. It’s not just Woody; I’ll keep my distance from any man before we divorce. You can rest assured."
Eliza’s attitude was sincere, and she had given him her assurance, but Shane found her words grating.
’What does she mean, "keep her distance before we divorce"? So after the divorce...’
Realizing what he was thinking, Shane couldn’t help but chuckle. ’I must be losing my mind, letting Emmett get to me.’
"Come with me to a social engagement."
Eliza didn’t refuse. Since Shane had spoken, he clearly had no intention of letting her say no.
She turned to look out the car window.
It was already past eight o’clock, and the city outside was bustling. Brilliant lights and strolling couples were everywhere.
After five years away, the streets and alleys of Seabourne had truly changed so much.
Half an hour later, Eliza was pushing Shane’s wheelchair at the entrance of a private room on the top floor of The Imperial Feast.
There were already a dozen or so people in the room. They all rose to their feet upon seeing Shane.
"Lord Lockwood."
"President Lockwood."
"President Lockwood, we look forward to working with you."
Suddenly, a delicate voice rang out.
Everyone turned to look and saw a girl in a white dress, as graceful as a willow in the wind, standing at the back.
Her features were gentle and beautiful, yet she held her chin up slightly, a trace of arrogance in her eyes.
Walter Ellington let out a sound of surprise upon seeing this girl.
"Shane, she and Vivian..."
Shane’s gaze shifted over, and Walter Ellington immediately shut his mouth.
At the side, Eliza’s eyebrow twitched slightly, but she said nothing.
A portly executive stepped forward, rubbing his hands together with a broad, fawning smile. "President Lockwood, this is my newly adopted goddaughter. She’s always admired you the most. When she heard I was meeting you today, she insisted on coming along. I really had no choice but to bring her. Please, don’t mind the intrusion."
A slight smile touched Shane’s lips. "Not at all."
The man was instantly overjoyed and shot the girl a meaningful look.
The girl glided over gracefully, extending a delicate, pale hand. She stared with a look of utter fascination at the powerful, elegant, and noble man in the wheelchair. "President Lockwood."
That one "President Lockwood" was enough to make a person’s bones melt. She suddenly let out a small cry, her legs went weak, and she stumbled toward Shane’s lap.
The girl’s cheeks were flushed, and her eyes sparkled with determined ambition.
She knew she was beautiful, but her greatest advantage wasn’t her beauty; it was her resemblance. Her godfather had already told her she looked just like President Lockwood’s "white moonlight."
What man could possibly resist the allure of his "white moonlight"?
Once that happened, she would have truly soared to the highest branch!
Just then, a soft hand reached out, steadying her. At the same time, its owner squeezed past, blocking Shane’s front.
"Miss, you should watch your step. It would be a shame if you fell and got hurt."
