After My Death, the Love-struck CEO Begs for Reconciliation-Chapter 21 - 22
After returning to the country, Julian Lancaster asked his assistant to quickly investigate all the details about Serena Sullivan and Caleb Crawford.
On the way to the hospital, he passed by a sweet shop and, inexplicably, he wanted to go in and have a piece of osmanthus cake. So much had happened in recent days, and he hadn’t eaten properly.
However, as soon as the osmanthus cake entered his mouth, he understood why he wanted to eat it.
Every Friday back then, I would always make him a piece of osmanthus cake, which he would casually toss to his assistant. Only once, when his dinner was spilled by an intern at the company and he was hungry enough that his stomach hurt, did he reluctantly eat a piece.
Though he didn’t care much for me, he had to admit that my cooking was good.
At least the osmanthus cake was delicious.
Exactly the same taste as this place.
"Boss, I haven’t been back for years, has your osmanthus cake become tastier?"
Julian Lancaster heard a customer nearby chatting with the shop owner as the owner cheerfully walked out from the kitchen.
"A few years ago, a female student came to work part-time at our shop and helped improve the recipe. Everyone loves it."
A female student, Julian’s heart stirred as he asked, "A college student? Why not intern at a company instead of working here?"
The owner glanced at him with an expression of "don’t you understand people have their reasons," and said, "You must be a big boss, right? You probably don’t know, but she seemed to have made some mistake back then, causing her to be blacklisted by the entire industry. No big company would hire her, so she had nowhere to go. But what’s wrong with a sweet shop? We didn’t treat her badly..." 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂
Julian repeatedly apologized, saying he didn’t mean it like that. But internally, he was doubtful and wanted to show the owner my photo, but after searching for a while, his phone only had photos of him and Serena Sullivan. Annoyed, he deleted them all.
After finishing the osmanthus cake, he instructed his assistant to investigate the sweet shop. He had a feeling that the female student the owner mentioned was me.
Yet he found it strange since I could have gone to his company. As long as I asked, he would have given me an internship position. So why did the sweet shop owner say I had nowhere to go?
In the evening, the assistant rushed to the hospital and handed over the gathered information to Julian Lancaster. To his surprise, the photo of the employee was indeed of me.
"Why didn’t she come to intern at our company..." Julian slowly spoke.
The assistant glanced at him and, after much deliberation, responded, "Mr. Lancaster, back then you said, to pave the way for Miss Sullivan, all perfume and design companies in Keston were not to hire Miss Everard, that’s why..."
"Me?" Julian felt as if he had heard the biggest joke, "How could I..."
He remembered. It was when Serena Sullivan tearfully told him she was afraid I would compete with her and steal her opportunities. So, he used his connections to block all my paths, just because Serena hadn’t decided which company she wanted to go to yet.
What did I say back then?
Julian couldn’t remember. Or rather, he never cared about what I would say.
I was like a little tail he couldn’t shake off; no matter how he treated me, I wouldn’t leave. Even when he hurt me for Serena Sullivan, I only said it was okay, I was willing. If you feel bad about it, then marry me.
And how did he respond? He would say, don’t dream, Clara Everard, I’m not going to marry you, the person I love is Serena.
I wasn’t sad, or maybe I was, but Julian Lancaster didn’t care.
Moreover, he had already promised to marry me, so why did I suddenly leave? Did I not want him anymore?
Julian couldn’t accept it. He couldn’t even distinguish what his feelings for me truly were; he only knew he didn’t want me to leave him.
