Chapter 29: Chapter 29: Flirted With by Him

"Yeah, I even said hi to Wyatt, but he ignored me." Silas Sterling’s voice sounded a little hurt.

Alice York was so nervous she could hear her own chaotic heartbeat. She barely managed to steady herself and asked tentatively, "You didn’t get to speak with Third Uncle?"

"No." Silas Sterling suddenly looked at Alice York.

His gaze made Alice York’s palms break out in a cold sweat.

She thought Silas Sterling would ask why Wyatt Sterling had come out of her room, but instead, she was surprised to hear him say, "But Mason Cheney did say hi to me."

Hearing that Mason Cheney was also there, the taut string in Alice York’s mind suddenly loosened.

’Mason Cheney is here too, so it should be fine.’

"Mason Cheney told me that your Third Uncle was looking for you early this morning to go over the arrangements for the trip to the Churchill family." As Silas Sterling spoke, a trace of guilt that Alice York couldn’t comprehend appeared on his face. "If I hadn’t insisted on coming this time, Alice, you wouldn’t have been dragged into this."

Alice York understood the first part, but she didn’t quite get the second. "Uncle Sterling, when you said ’dragged into,’ what did you mean?"

Silas Sterling stopped there and didn’t elaborate. "Alice, we’re on the ground floor. Let’s go."

As the elevator doors opened, Silas Sterling was the first to step out.

Alice York quickened her pace to follow, wanting to get a clear answer. "Uncle Sterling, you still haven’t told me what I’ve been dragged into."

Silas Sterling paused. He turned his head to look at Alice York, his tone somewhat helpless. "Alice, it’s not convenient for me to say too much right now. In any case, you’ll find out soon enough."

Alice York pressed her lips together, lost in thought.

That day, Old Master Sterling had only instructed her to accompany Silas Sterling, make sure he took his medicine, and prevent any episodes. He hadn’t specified anything else she needed to do.

In truth, she was also puzzled. Her intuition told her that Old Master Sterling’s reason for having her accompany them this time was not so simple.

’I don’t know if this is a blessing or a curse.’

Next, they set off for the Churchill family’s residence.

Today was the memorial service for Old Mrs. Churchill. As her biological grandson, Silas Sterling had to get there early.

As for Wyatt Sterling, Alice York heard he would be going later, probably waiting to go with Owen Sterling after he arrived in Washington.

Unlike Silas Sterling, they were representing the Sterlings as a formality, while Silas was there to say goodbye as a family member.

About ten minutes later, the car arrived outside the Churchill family’s villa.

When Alice York got out of the car, she heard mournful music. She looked up and marveled that the Churchill family actually owned a standalone villa in Washington. They certainly had style.

The Churchill family had sent someone out to receive them. Upon seeing a familiar face, Silas Sterling began to weep uncontrollably. Alice York reached out to support him, but another hand beat her to it, steadying Silas. "I’ll help him."

Alice York looked up and saw a handsome young man with refined features.

"You’re Kyle, aren’t you?" Silas Sterling recognized the person helping him.

Kyle Churchill nodded at him, then said, "Cousin-Uncle."

Standing to the side, Alice York quickly pieced together the man’s identity. Silas Sterling’s birth mother had an older brother, and that brother had a son who was about her age. Hearing him call Silas "Cousin-Uncle" just now, she figured this must be him.

"So Kyle has grown up so much." Silas Sterling’s eyes were red as he spoke with great emotion.

Kyle Churchill looked at him, his tone calm. "Cousin-Uncle, it’s been many years since we’ve seen each other."

Afterward, Kyle Churchill helped the emotional Silas Sterling inside. He didn’t ignore Alice York, either, and specifically instructed a servant to show her the way.

Many people had come to attend Old Mrs. Churchill’s memorial service today. Feeling her status was inappropriate, Alice York didn’t go inside. Later, when she heard that Silas Sterling had cried until he fainted, she rushed in.

"Excuse me, please let me through." Alice York pushed through the crowd toward Silas Sterling, who was slumped on the floor.

By the time she got close, Kyle Churchill had already lifted the unconscious Silas Sterling. He looked up and saw Alice York’s anxious face. "You’re a doctor, right?"

Alice York froze. ’Who told him that?’ she wondered subconsciously.

"I’ll take my cousin-uncle out first. You follow me." Kyle Churchill didn’t wait for her to process this, immediately supporting the unconscious Silas Sterling and heading out.

Alice York had no time for further thought and immediately followed.

In a quiet bedroom, Kyle Churchill laid the man on the bed and then made way for Alice York. "Can you handle this?"

Alice York nodded.

She opened her bag, placed it by the bed, and took out the medicine and syringe she had prepared in advance.

This was the medication she kept ready for Silas Sterling at all times. Besides monitoring his physical condition, she had also anticipated that a sudden incident might occur today. After all, the deceased was his biological grandmother, and emotions could easily spiral out of control at a memorial service.

After she finished, a thin layer of sweat had formed on Alice York’s forehead. Kyle Churchill handed her a tissue. "That was hard work. Wipe your sweat."

Alice York put her bag away and took the tissue. "Thank you."

Kyle Churchill glanced at the bed. "Is my cousin-uncle stable now?"

"Yes. Let him sleep for a while longer." After wiping away her sweat, Alice York folded the tissue and threw it in the trash can.

Kyle Churchill stared at Alice York’s face.

She wasn’t wearing any makeup today. Because she spent most of her time in a hospital, rarely seeing the sun, her skin was a cool-toned pale. Yet her features were delicate and well-defined. Even without makeup, her face was striking and radiant.

Alice York met Kyle Churchill’s gaze. "Why are you looking at me?"

Kyle Churchill’s gaze flickered, and he chuckled. "You’re very beautiful. I couldn’t help but be drawn to you. Especially the way you were so calm while saving him just now—it’s very charming, very attractive to me."

His words made Alice York feel a little uncomfortable.

It was like being flirted with out of the blue.

However, she remembered that the look in Kyle Churchill’s eyes just now hadn’t been one of attraction, but rather... something complex?

"You’re my cousin-uncle’s adopted daughter, right?" Kyle Churchill asked.

A small smile played on Alice York’s lips. "Since you were able to identify me as a doctor right away, I thought you had already figured out my identity completely."

Kyle Churchill turned away. "Not completely. Today is the first time we’ve met."

Alice York didn’t dwell on his words.

After leaving the room, she said to Kyle Churchill, "The memorial service isn’t over yet. You should go attend to things. I’ll stay here and watch over Uncle Sterling."

Kyle Churchill didn’t linger. Before leaving, he made a point of saying to her, "See you later."

Alice York watched him go with a smile, but the moment he was out of sight, the smile vanished from her face. ’That guy is strange. Being around him makes me feel so uncomfortable. A person’s intuition is rarely wrong. It’s probably best to avoid contact with him.’

Suddenly recalling how Silas Sterling had been so hesitant to speak earlier, Alice York felt a growing unease. After some thought, she took out her phone and called Mindy Vaughn.

The crisp sound of mahjong tiles clacking came from the other end of the line.

"What’s wrong, Alice?"

Alice York guessed Mindy Vaughn was on a winning streak, as her tone was very gentle. She took the opportunity to ask quickly, "When Grandpa asked me to accompany Uncle Sterling to Washington, was there another reason?"

"Oh? Is there another reason? What reason?"

Mindy Vaughn’s questioning tone sounded natural, not like she was deliberately hiding something.

’So Mindy probably doesn’t know either.’

"Did something happen in Washington?" Mindy Vaughn discarded a tile, only for the player opposite her to declare a kong.

Alice York: "Nothing happened. I just feel like there must be a hidden reason why Grandpa sent me to Washington this time."
