After His Sweetheart Moved In, He Came Home Every Night-Chapter 191: Not Giving Her a Chance to Escape
"I’m not going."
Alice York put down her soup bowl, her expression calm as she politely refused.
"But I’m sincerely inviting you to come..."
Before Finn Hawthorne could finish, Alice York looked up and reminded him, "I don’t know what your motives are, but your brother—the Eldest Young Master Hawthorne—won’t welcome me at your home."
Alice said this deliberately to remind Finn.
It also gave her a legitimate reason to refuse.
Sure enough, Finn Hawthorne’s expression immediately turned troubled. "I forgot. My brother just warned me."
Alice York’s lips curved slightly as she picked up her chopsticks and continued to eat.
Finn Hawthorne pulled up a chair and sat down beside her, clearly with no intention of leaving. Alice ignored him and quietly ate her meal.
But to her surprise, Finn Hawthorne hadn’t given up. "The Hawthorne Family owns houses all over Arden. How about I take you to stay at one of our other residences?"
Alice said, "I have a place to stay."
Finn said, "But you got sick as soon as you arrived at the Sawyer Family’s place. That means it’s not a suitable place for you."
Alice sighed mid-bite. "Finn Hawthorne, will you ever stop?"
Finn looked aggrieved. "I’m just looking out for you."
"..."
Seeing him like this, Alice couldn’t help but feel a little soft-hearted. He was, after all, a lofty young master of the Hawthorne Family. When had he ever been so thoroughly and awkwardly rebuffed?
But her stance was also clear: she didn’t want to get too involved with the Hawthornes.
"You..."
"Hold on, I have to take this call." Finn Hawthorne’s phone rang in his pocket.
Alice swallowed her words and nodded with a hum.
Finn Hawthorne took out his phone and walked to the window. He looked at the caller ID on the screen, a little annoyed.
’I just got here to see Alice, and his brother’s call is already coming in. He must be watching me. Answering this will just mean another lecture.’
After hesitating for a few seconds, he slowly pressed the answer button. "Bro, what’s up?"
"Just checking where you are."
Felix Hawthorne had just arrived at the airport but hadn’t gotten out of the car yet. After learning that Finn Hawthorne had rushed to the hospital, he had timed this call perfectly.
Finn Hawthorne said sullenly, "Don’t you already know?"
Felix Hawthorne: "What would I know?"
Finn had no choice but to confess, "She’s sick in the hospital. I just came to check on her. I’ll leave after I do."
"Check on who?"
Felix Hawthorne’s tone made it sound like he genuinely had no idea what was going on.
Finn asked tentatively, "Bro, you really don’t know?"
Felix Hawthorne chuckled. "What do you think?"
"..."
On his end of the line, Felix Hawthorne let out a low laugh. He switched the phone to his other hand, tilted his head to signal for Chase Jennings to watch the time, and then rolled up the car window.
A moment later, Chase Jennings knocked on the window and said in a low voice, "Eldest Young Master, the flight carrying the master and madam has arrived."
"You take some men and go meet them first. I’ll be right there," Felix Hawthorne said.
Chase Jennings nodded. "Yes, sir."
Finn Hawthorne heard their conversation clearly and asked, "Are Mom and Dad back with Tess Thompson?"
Felix Hawthorne: "You were supposed to come with me to pick them up."
But Finn pulled out a convenient excuse. "Mom and Dad’s main goal is to protect her. Too many people will just attract attention and risk leaks. It’s better if you just go quietly, bro. We’ll see each other tonight."
Felix Hawthorne reminded him, "Today is Vera’s first time coming home."
"I know, but you’re there, bro, aren’t you? It won’t make a difference whether I’m there or not." Finn Hawthorne’s tone was flippant, as if he didn’t think picking up Tess Thompson was a big deal.
The call went silent for a moment.
Felix Hawthorne’s tone turned earnest. "Finn, I remember you used to be the one most excited about finding Vera. Now that she’s back today, are you really not going to greet her?"
Finn Hawthorne glanced back at Alice York, who was still eating.
She ate quietly, as if he didn’t exist.
"Alright, I’m coming over now."
In the end, family ties were what mattered most. Finn Hawthorne reflected on his behavior; he couldn’t let his long-lost sister feel sad the moment she returned.
Felix Hawthorne looked up, noticing a group of people emerging from the airport. He spoke to Finn Hawthorne on the phone, "Don’t bother coming over. They’re already out."
Finn Hawthorne grinned, joy creeping into his expression.
Felix Hawthorne pushed open the car door and got out. The call hadn’t ended yet, so he added, "As for Alice York, stay if you want, but don’t be back too late."
The call ended.
Finn Hawthorne clutched his phone and darted back to Alice York’s side, plopping down. "This is great!"
Alice was already used to his sudden bursts of excitement. She calmly ate her food. "You seem happy."
Finn’s face was beaming. "Of course I’m happy! It means I can stay with you a little longer."
Alice stopped chewing. "Stay with me?"
"Yup~"
He was practically wagging his tail.
Alice turned her face away from him. "Thanks, but I don’t need anyone to keep me company."
"Of course you need company when you’re sick." Finn Hawthorne noticed Alice’s soup bowl was empty and took the initiative to ladle more for her.
He was as attentive as a nanny.
When Alice York finished eating, Finn Hawthorne even took it upon himself to clear the leftovers from the table. Alice watched him quietly, the words she wanted to say getting stuck in her throat.
Her WeChat chimed once. Alice picked up her phone to check the message and saw that Wyatt Sterling was on his way to the hospital. She immediately told Finn Hawthorne, "Wyatt Sterling is coming. You should go back now."
Hearing the name Wyatt Sterling, Finn Hawthorne was reminded of the beating he’d gotten. ’Then again, I deserved it. If it weren’t for Wyatt, something terrible really would have happened to Alice.’
"Let him come. I’m not afraid of him," Finn Hawthorne said, his tone full of bravado.
’If Wyatt Sterling dared to lay a single finger on me in Arden, he might not make it out of the city alive.’
Alice had no choice but to remind him, "Didn’t you say your sister is coming back today? Why aren’t you going home?"
Finn Hawthorne replied as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. "My brother’s there, so it’s fine if I go back later."
Alice pursed her lips. "If I were your sister, after being separated from my family and wandering for over twenty years, only to finally come home and not be seen as important... I’d rather not have come back at all."
Alice had only said it casually to give Finn Hawthorne a little nudge.
But unexpectedly, Finn Hawthorne’s face suddenly turned pale. "You would think that?"
Alice nodded. "Of course."
Without another word, Finn Hawthorne grabbed Alice’s hand and started pulling her out. Before Alice could even react, he had already led her out of the hospital room.
Alice quickly asked him, "Where are you taking me?" 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖
Finn Hawthorne’s tone was earnest. "You were right. If I don’t go back, she might be sad. But I also really want you to meet her, so you’re coming with me."
Alice: ?
She just couldn’t follow his train of thought. One second he was normal, the next he was acting crazy.
The two of them struggled all the way down the elevator.
Alice tried to ask passing nurses and doctors for help, but after seeing Finn Hawthorne’s face, they just gave her a sympathetic look, as if to say there was nothing they could do.
Alice nearly fainted.
Finn Hawthorne steadied her. "Did I forget to mention? In Arden, my face is my pass everywhere I go."
"..."
In the end, Alice was dragged and pushed into Finn Hawthorne’s sports car. The car’s acceleration was already astonishingly fast, and the moment he stomped on the gas, she lost any chance of opening the door to escape.
