After His Sweetheart Moved In, He Came Home Every Night-Chapter 186: She Was Placed Under House Arrest
Alice’s heart tightened, but she didn’t let any of it show on her face. In a hoarse voice, she explained, "I already showed my ID and went through security."
The staff member repeated, "Please show your ID again."
Alice’s jaw tensed, and her lips pressed into a thin line. ’I already passed security, so why am I being stopped now? Old Master Sterling’s reach couldn’t possibly extend inside the airport. He doesn’t have that much power in Arden...’
"Please show your ID again," the staff member repeated a third time, patiently.
Alice sighed and finally took out her ID.
As she watched the staff member repeatedly check her ID against something, she could only keep reassuring herself. ’It’s just a small mix-up. Once they clear it up, everything will be fine. I will definitely be able to leave today! I have to!’
The short wait felt as long as a century.
Alice grew increasingly anxious.
Finally, the staff member glanced at her, confiscated her ID right in front of her, and said to the security officer beside them, "It’s confirmed. It’s her."
"What’s wrong? I haven’t broken any laws, have I?" A bad feeling was already creeping into Alice’s heart.
The staff member told her, "There’s an issue with your identification information. You cannot board the plane for the time being."
"What’s wrong with my identification information?"
Realizing the situation was not good, Alice resorted to making a scene. "Everything was fine when I arrived! I haven’t done anything illegal or broken any rules, and I don’t have a bad credit history. Why can’t I board the plane? You have to give me an explanation!"
After saying all this, her throat ached terribly, and her face was deathly pale.
The staff member gave Alice a sympathetic look. "Please cooperate with the airport’s investigation for now."
Alice pressed, "How do I cooperate? How long will it take? I’m telling you, I have something very important to do. I can’t afford any delays. I have to be on this flight!"
The staff member didn’t explain much, only saying, "You can board after the investigation is complete and we confirm there are no issues."
Alice’s heart sank.
’It looks like I’m not leaving today, no matter what.’
’But I still don’t know who is stopping me from leaving Arden. Old Master Sterling’s reach couldn’t extend inside the airport. Could it be Wyatt Sterling?’
In the end, Alice was escorted to a private waiting room.
A staff member not only poured her some tea but also prepared a tray of dried fruits. Alice was in no mood for tea, let alone those dry fruits.
She tried to find out who was preventing her from boarding, but no one would tell her. They just told her to sit and wait, refusing to return her ID or her phone.
This was basically house arrest.
「About ten minutes later.」
The door to the waiting room opened, and someone walked in.
During this time, Alice hadn’t touched the tea or dried fruits in front of her. She hadn’t struggled needlessly; instead, she was resting her head on the table. Hearing the sound, she looked up and saw a man in a sharp suit.
Chase Jennings sized up Alice for a few moments, then walked closer and said, "You’re Alice York."
Alice slowly stood up, looking the man over with the same appraising gaze. "Who are you?"
Chase Jennings said, "I’m the one who’s stopping you from leaving Arden."
Hearing this, Alice’s pupils contracted, and she subconsciously took a half-step back. This subtle movement didn’t escape Chase Jennings’s notice. He smiled slightly and explained, "Don’t be afraid, Miss Alice. I mean no harm. I just want to clarify a few things."
Alice stared at him defensively. "What do you want to clarify?"
’I don’t even know who this person is or what he wants. But the one thing I can be sure of is that he’s not one of Old Master Sterling’s men.’
"Have a seat first." Chase Jennings gestured for her to sit.
Alice remained calm and slowly sat down.
Chase Jennings sat down as well. His gaze swept over the tea and dried fruits on the table. "Really, Miss Alice, there’s no need to be so on guard."
Heh.
Suddenly, Alice’s professional habits kicked in. "Go see a neurologist."
Chase Jennings: "What?"
Alice said sarcastically, "I’ve been stopped for no reason, I don’t know if you’re a good guy or a bad guy, and I have no idea what you want. You think I’d dare to eat any of this? The neurology referral is my professional advice for you."
Chase Jennings was taken aback for a moment before his expression turned serious again. "Miss Alice, could you please tell me why you’re suddenly returning to Rhovan?"
Alice: "To go back to work."
Chase Jennings: "To work?"
Alice’s emotions slowly stabilized. "The hospital is busy. I only took one day off."
Chase Jennings: "Miss Alice, you’re quite the workaholic. Your voice is so hoarse you can barely speak, yet you’re still thinking about rushing from one city back to another just for work."
Alice’s throat was too raw, and her voice lacked strength. "Isn’t that just the fate of a working stiff?"
Chase Jennings smiled. This was what he wanted—for Alice to let down her guard. It was easier to talk when she was calm. Now, he got to the point. "Miss Alice, may I ask what your relationship is with Keith Vaughn and Erin Leigh?"
Hearing those two names unexpectedly from this stranger’s mouth, Alice shot to her feet with a jolt.
"Who the hell are you? What do you want?"
Chase Jennings remained seated. "Miss Alice, you only need to answer my question."
Alice’s face was cold. "Why should I tell you?"
Chase Jennings looked up at her. "Miss Alice, please be a little more cooperative."
Alice: "And why should I cooperate?"
Chase Jennings: "..."
’Why is this stubborn streak so familiar? Who does it remind me of? Like... oh, right, like our Third Master! You can’t reason with her, just can’t reason with her at all!’
Chase Jennings tried to persuade her gently. "Miss Alice, if you want to return to Silvanus today, then please cooperate and answer some questions."
"And if I answer, I can board my plane?"
"I’m afraid not."
Chase Jennings replied.
"Then why should I cooperate with you?"
Just as Alice finished speaking, the door was suddenly kicked open. The loud BANG made Alice jump.
"Third Master Sterling is certainly coming in hot. It seems his hostility is quite high."
Chase Jennings stood up unhurriedly.
Alice suddenly turned her head. It was him. Wyatt Sterling was here!
"You forcibly took my person without even giving me a heads-up. I’ve always had a bad temper. The fact that I haven’t torn this place apart is me being polite."
As he finished speaking, Wyatt Sterling was already by Alice’s side.
His aura was glacial. Chase Jennings frowned. "I mean Miss Alice no harm. I only stopped her because I wanted to ask a few questions."
"My person. You need my permission to ask her even a single word." Wyatt Sterling wrapped an arm around Alice’s shoulder, his posture extremely dominant. "Go back and tell Felix Hawthorne he won’t get to ask a single thing."
"You..."
Chase Jennings looked like he wanted to say more, but in the end, he kept his mouth shut.
Wyatt Sterling led Alice away directly. No one stopped them, and no one dared to.
Outside the airport, Wyatt Sterling forcibly pushed Alice into his car. Alice didn’t want to get in, and during the struggle, she slapped him across the neck.
He gripped her wrist, his voice low. "Have you had enough?"
Alice stared at the red mark on his neck and said through gritted teeth, "I thought you were done with me!"
