Chapter 71: The boss..?

From the group of beastmen stepped forward a short, chubby male with buck teeth. Puffing out his chest, he shouted dramatically,

"This mountain was opened by me! This tree was planted by me! If you want to pass this road—leave your beast crystals behind!"

The slightly taller, dark-skinned male beside him smacked him on the head.

"What beast crystals?"

He lifted his chin arrogantly and pointed at Nina and the others. "Leave the female behind!"

The buck-toothed male blinked in confusion. "Then... we don’t want the beast crystals anymore?"

The dark-skinned male thought about it seriously. "Females are more valuable."

Behind them, a tall, broad-shouldered male stepped forward and smacked both their heads at once.

"Only fools will choose between the two." His voice boomed like thunder. "We’re taking both—the crystals and the female."

"Big Brother is right!" the dark-skinned male immediately agreed, shrinking his neck. "Hehe... it’s our first time being wandering beasts. Still getting used to the business."

"Same here," the buck-toothed one muttered. "Not very experienced yet."

Nina stared at them, stunned.

Where did this group of idiots come from?

Mino and the others rose at once, forming a protective barrier around Nina and the eggs.

"You’re wandering beasts?" Mino narrowed his eyes. Somehow... they didn’t quite look the part.

"Yes! We are fierce wandering beasts!" the tall one declared loudly. "Hand over the crystals and the female, and we might spare your lives."

Yanai raised an eyebrow at Sal.

Your subordinates? Handle them.

Sal frowned deeply.

Do I look like I’d have subordinates this stupid?

He stepped forward impatiently.

"If you don’t want to die, get lost."

"Who do you think you are, telling Brother Dahn to get lost?" the buck-toothed male jumped out again indignantly.

Yanai shot Sal a strange look.

Your leadership isn’t great. Your underlings don’t even recognize you.

Sal rolled his eyes.

They are absolutely not my people.

"Since you’re so eager to die," Sal said coldly, black energy spheres forming around him, "I’ll grant your wish."

Brother Dahn immediately spread a pair of enormous black wings and shot into the sky. From above, his sharp eyes finally caught sight of Nina—who had been shielded behind the others.

In that instant, his entire world turned pink.

Wow... this little female is so beautiful!

Brother Dahn felt like he had just met the love of his life.

"Brothers! Charge! Beat them and seize the little female!" he roared passionately.

However, his subordinates hesitated—and began backing away instead.

"Big Brother... I don’t think we can beat them," the buck-toothed one muttered.

They hadn’t even officially started fighting, but Sal’s aura alone had already made their instincts scream danger.

Brother Dahn glared at them angrily.

"You useless—"

Before he could finish, several black energy spheres shot toward him. He dodged frantically, but one grazed his wing, leaving it smoking.

The other wandering beasts were instantly blasted into chaos.

The buck-toothed male dug a hole at lightning speed and vanished underground.

The dark-skinned male released a horrific biological weapon—an indescribably foul stench—then bolted away in a blur.

Brother Dahn flapped straight into the sky and didn’t dare come back down.

Within seconds, the entire group scattered like startled birds.

Mino and Yanai covered their noses. Nina quickly covered both her own and Yinny’s. The eggs wobbled in circles as if dizzy.

Nina felt like she might faint from the smell.

Seeing her and the babies nearly overwhelmed, Mino and the others immediately carried them away, running until the stench finally faded.

Nina took a long time to recover.

She suspected she might lose her appetite entirely that night.

They continued onward.

Meanwhile, Brother Dahn and his gang regrouped at a predetermined spot.

"Big Brother," the buck-toothed male said, "that male is too strong. We can’t beat him. Let’s pick another target?"

"No!" Brother Dahn declared firmly. "We must defeat them and win the little female." 𝓯𝙧𝓮𝓮𝒘𝓮𝙗𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒆𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝒎

"Why?" the dark-skinned male asked. "We can rob some other female."

"No. No one else can replace her," Brother Dahn said solemnly, gazing into the distance. "Because she is my love."

His subordinates stared at him in shock.

The buck-toothed male rolled his eyes. "Big Brother, we’re wandering beasts. Since when do wandering beasts talk about love? Females are just passing clouds."

"Who says wandering beasts can’t have love? I will be the first!" Brother Dahn declared heroically. "From today on, we follow them. I will win that little female!"

The two underlings facepalmed.

"Fine..."

After all, he was the boss.

So they began secretly trailing Nina and her group.

The next day, they popped out again to provoke them—only to unleash another wave of that horrifying stench before fleeing.

Nina was thoroughly speechless.

She seriously considered how to shake off this bizarre group once and for all.

***

That afternoon, Nina and the others were surrounded again.

But this time, it was Tribal Chief Tali and his men.

"Mino," Tali called arrogantly, "hand over Nina, and I’ll spare your life."

Mino’s expression turned icy. Countless ice blades materialized around him.

"You?" he scoffed. "You and your lackeys aren’t even worth killing."

Before he finished speaking, the ice blades shot toward Tali.

Tali dodged quickly, retreating.

"I know I can’t defeat you," he said coldly, "but do you think I came without reinforcements?"

He shouted behind him, "Ghost Wolf! If you want the rest of your beast crystals, get over here!"

Ghost Wolf and his men had deliberately lagged behind out of annoyance at chasing for days.

Hearing the shout, Ghost Wolf waved lazily.

"Brothers. Time to work."

They moved forward swiftly.

Mino didn’t wait. He attacked immediately. Yanai joined him.

Sal, in beast form, carried Nina and the babies to one side, guarding them.

Watching Mino and Yanai fight with ease, Nina felt slightly reassured.

Yinny watched the battle with bright eyes, occasionally swiping his tiny paw in excitement.

Tali’s men were quickly overwhelmed, casualties mounting as they began to falter.

Then Ghost Wolf and his wandering beasts arrived.

Tali’s heart lifted.

Now, surely Mino couldn’t handle so many seventh-rank fighters.

"Mino," Tali sneered, "my reinforcements are here. They’re all seventh-rank beastmen. Hand over Nina while you still can."

Mino remained fearless.

"Spare me the nonsense. However many you bring—one comes, I kill one."

Tali pointed.

"They’re your targets."

Ghost Wolf looked at Mino disdainfully.

"Big talk. Let me see what you’ve got."

From not far away, Sal watched with a strange expression.

Of all the reinforcements Tali could have chosen... he had hired Ghost Wolf.

Sal lifted his head and let out a thunderous roar.

Ghost Wolf and the wandering beasts froze instantly.

That roar... Wasn’t that... the boss’s voice?
