Chapter 55: Admiring her

The very first thing Nina did when she woke up the next morning was check on her seven little eggs.

"Are my babies awake?"

She gently stroked them one by one.

Five of the eggs wobbled energetically in response, while the other two swayed more sluggishly.

Nina guessed those two had just woken up and were still a little dazed.

"Mommy is going out to eat breakfast. You all stay inside nicely and don’t roll around too much, okay?"

She carefully tucked the edges of the nest tighter, worried the eggs might tumble out. The nest was starting to feel cramped with all seven of them squeezed together. She made a mental note to build a larger one later.

The eggs gave small wiggles in reply, as if assuring their mother they understood.

"Good babies."

After giving them another affectionate round of pats, Nina went out to wash up and have breakfast.

After eating, Mino prepared to head out again to gather vegetables. He had already stripped most of the nearby patches bare and would need to go farther today.

Before leaving, he instructed Yanai, "I’m going to look for vegetables. Later, remember to cook for Nina. And don’t make anything that tastes like poison again. Just stick to something simple—meat soup, fish soup, things like that."

Although Yanai’s soups weren’t exactly delicious, at least they were edible.

"Got it. I’ll have the little female teach me. She’ll definitely teach better than you. I’ll learn properly this time," Yanai retorted stubbornly.

"Clearly you’re just slow and won’t admit it," Mino muttered under his breath.

After a few more reminders, he finally left the stone house.

Once Nina finished eating, she returned to the room to make a new nest for the eggs.

The old one was too crowded, so she carefully moved all seven eggs onto the bed and surrounded them with rolled-up beast-hide blankets to create a soft play area.

"Babies, Mommy’s going to build you a bigger nest. You can play here on the bed for now, but don’t roll past the blankets, okay?"

As soon as they were placed on the bed, the eggs began rolling around happily. From time to time, a few bumped into their siblings. Some even seemed to deliberately knock into each other as if playing.

Every so often, Nina heard soft thudding sounds—thump, thump. Each time, she instinctively glanced over, worried they might crack themselves.

Seeing them so lively and cheerful, she smiled and focused on weaving the new nest.

Sal lay on the bed, watching Nina and the babies with gentle eyes.

He was certain he must be the happiest male in the entire beast world.

More than two hours later, Yanai called from the doorway, "Little female, what would you like to eat later?"

Nina rubbed her stomach. After giving birth, she no longer felt hungry as quickly.

"I’m not hungry yet. We can cook at noon."

"Alright, I’ll ask you again later."

He went back to his own tasks.

Close to lunchtime, Yanai returned. "Little female, what do you want for lunch?"

Nina thought for a moment. "What can you make?"

She absolutely did not want another table of dark, inedible disasters.

Yanai coughed awkwardly. "Soups are at least edible... But it’s fine. Whatever you want, you can teach me. I’ll study seriously this time."

Nina considered. That was better than blackened catastrophe cuisine.

"Okay. Give me a moment, I’ll come out."

She turned to the eggs again. "Mommy’s going to teach Uncle how to cook. Play nicely and don’t roll past the blankets."

The eggs wobbled obediently.

Still uneasy, Nina stacked a few extra items around the edges to make the barrier taller.

Then she turned to Sal. "Little Flower, keep an eye on the babies. Don’t let them fall."

Sal nodded, though inwardly he wasn’t worried at all.

These beast cubs weren’t that fragile. Even if they fell from the bed, they wouldn’t be hurt in the slightest.

After double-checking everything, Nina finally stepped outside.

Yanai was already waiting eagerly. "What are we making today?"

Nina glanced at the fish in the water vat and suddenly craved some.

"Let’s cook fish for lunch. One braised in soy sauce, two with chopped chili, one for fish soup. Then we’ll stir-fry some meat."

"Got it. I’ll start with the fish—I know how to handle those."

He grabbed a beast-bone knife and began cleaning the fish. To his credit, he did it swiftly and neatly.

"What next?" he asked.

"Marinate the fish we’ll use later. We’ll start with the soup."

Yanai followed her instructions carefully.

Nina gestured toward the stone pot. "Add oil first, then fry the fish."

She had already prepared the side ingredients and boiling water while he cleaned the fish.

Yanai obediently followed her lead.

"Fry until it turns golden like this, then flip it. Don’t overcook it—if it turns too dark, it’ll taste bitter," she reminded him.

He flipped the fish accordingly.

"Once both sides are done, add some shredded scallions and ginger to stir-fry briefly. It removes the fishy smell and enhances the flavor. Just a small handful is enough."

She demonstrated the amount.

"After that, pour in hot water—preferably boiling. That makes the broth richer and creamier."

Nina explained each step in detail. Yanai listened attentively.

Soon, a pot of fragrant fish soup was ready.

This time, Yanai tasted it first. He didn’t dare let Nina try it before testing it himself.

His eyes lit up. It was far better than anything he had cooked before.

See? It’s not that I’m bad—it’s that Mino can’t teach properly.

Mino would just demonstrate once and then leave him to struggle alone. Nina, on the other hand, explained everything patiently.

Yanai sneaked a glance at her.

The little female was truly gentle. The gentlest he had ever met.

After finishing the soup, Nina guided him through braised fish.

As he poured in soy sauce, Yanai asked curiously, "Little female, what does this black stuff—soy sauce—actually do? I’ve never seen or heard of it before coming here."

"It adds flavor, color, aroma, and removes fishiness," Nina explained. "It’s usually made from soybeans and other ingredients."

"And this sugar?"

"Extracted from plants too—usually sugarcane or beets."

...

Yanai asked question after question while cooking. He felt like he had learned a great deal in a single meal.

Now he truly believed what Mino had said—Nina was not only beautiful but also incredibly smart. He even found himself admiring her.

Finally, it was time to stir-fry the meat. Yanai hurried to wash and cut it.

Nina watched from the side, eyeing his knife technique suspiciously.

The way he’s cutting... isn’t he going to slice his finger?

As if on cue... He did.

She watched as a thin line of blood appeared on his finger—only to seal shut instantly.

Nina blinked.

What an innate vegetable-cutting saint physique.

One piece of meat had a drop of blood on it. Without hesitation, Yanai tossed it away.

Then she saw him cut himself again. And again.

And each time, he threw away the contaminated piece.

Nina felt her heart ache.

What a waste.

This guy was truly extravagant beyond reason.

She couldn’t take it anymore.
