Chapter 14: Chapter 14: The Mistress Might Be Pregnant

Adrian Sutton fought through his discomfort to finish the meal, and he paid the bill in advance.

When Claire Mercer realized he had already paid, she frowned and asked.

"You’re not even working right now. How could I let you treat me?"

This place was on the pricier side; today’s meal must have cost at least one or two thousand.

For someone who had just quit his job and was unemployed, that was a huge expense.

Although she had transferred sixty thousand to him a few days ago, that amount of money wouldn’t last long in Rhonia.

"I still haven’t thanked you for helping me out at the club the other day, Miss Mercer. Let today be my way of showing my gratitude."

"Besides, what kind of man lets a woman pay for dinner?"

Claire Mercer found Adrian Sutton to be a strange man.

He didn’t hold a grudge about how she had worn him out that night. Instead, he kept remembering how she had come to his defense.

’Honestly, if it had been someone else picking a fight with him, I probably wouldn’t have bothered to interfere.’

’Oh, well. What’s paid is paid. I can just transfer the money to him later.’

"Adrian Sutton, I’ve noticed you look very pale. Are you feeling unwell?"

Adrian Sutton forced a smile and shook his head.

"It’s just a bit of a stomach ache, nothing serious."

Claire Mercer noticed that he had looked perfectly fine before the meal.

’Did one meal really give him a stomach ache?’

Looking at the table full of spicy dishes, she had a good idea why his stomach was suddenly hurting.

"You can’t eat spicy food?"

Adrian Sutton didn’t want her to feel guilty, so he just made up an excuse.

"It’s fine. My stomach problems just act up occasionally. You don’t need to worry, Miss Mercer."

Seeing that his lips had turned pale from the pain and that beads of sweat were forming on his forehead, she figured his stomach problems must be severe.

Claire Mercer sighed. "Roxanne, Stella, you two head back first. I’m going to take him to the hospital to get some medicine."

Adrian Sutton hadn’t wanted to trouble her.

But at the thought of getting to spend more time alone with her, his stomach suddenly didn’t hurt quite as much.

The two of them went to the hospital’s emergency department. After seeing a doctor and getting a prescription, they were about to leave.

But unexpectedly, they ran into Scarlett Jewel at the hospital.

"Miss Mercer, what a coincidence."

After speaking, her gaze fell on Adrian Sutton, who was standing beside Claire.

’Where on earth did Claire Mercer find such a top-tier pretty boy?’

His fair face looked as if it had been meticulously carved, with every feature being nothing short of perfect.

His facial contours were deep and his jawline sharp, and the bridge of his nose was straight and prominent.

His dark, profound eyes and tightly pressed lips gave him a somewhat cold and sharp air.

A flash of amazement crossed Scarlett Jewel’s eyes, but it vanished just as quickly.

’This man might be devastatingly handsome, but his status is far too low.’

She had long since secretly investigated all the rich young masters in Rhonia’s elite circles.

There was never anyone with his looks among them, so he was clearly a commoner from a humble background.

’She wouldn’t even give a poor schmuck like him, who had nothing but a pretty face, a second glance.’

She shot Adrian Sutton a disdainful smile before turning to Claire Mercer.

"Miss Mercer, not even divorced yet and you’ve already found a new flame?"

Hearing this, Claire Mercer shot her a cold glance as if looking at an idiot, but said nothing.

She had no desire to engage with someone like Scarlett Jewel; even looking at her for an extra second made her feel sick.

But Scarlett Jewel was determined to get a rise out of her, rambling on as if to herself.

"I don’t know if it’s because the weather has been too hot lately, but I’ve been feeling so sleepy."

"And my appetite hasn’t been great, either. I especially can’t stand the smell of anything greasy. The moment I smell it, I feel like throwing up."

Scarlett Jewel’s words were a deliberate attempt to hint that she was pregnant.

She stared at Claire Mercer with leisurely expectation, wanting to see her reaction.

’She should be heartbroken, furious, maybe even fly into a rage and slap me.’

But who would have thought that Claire Mercer would just give her a cold eye-roll and walk straight past.

’That look she just gave me was like she was looking at an idiot.’

’What does that bitch mean by that?’

’I made it so obvious, why isn’t she reacting at all?’

’Doesn’t she love Gavin Sinclair? She even married him when his legs were crippled.’

’Now that she’s heard I might be carrying Gavin Sinclair’s child, the bitch is completely unfazed.’

’Claire Mercer, go on and pretend.’

’After tomorrow’s banquet, we’ll see how long you can keep up this act.’

After leaving the hospital, Adrian Sutton carefully observed Claire Mercer.

She was unhappy, and even seemed quite angry.

Her full, rosy lips were pressed into a tight line, and a frosty chill swirled in her clear, bright eyes.

’Her beloved husband is cheating on her, and his mistress might be pregnant. Of course she’d be angry and upset.’

’So she must still be in love with him.’

’Maybe her talk about divorce was just something she said in a moment of anger.’

’The girl he loved so deeply, hurt so badly, was still in love with that scumbag...’

Adrian Sutton felt a sharp, dull ache strike his heart.

He could barely restrain the urge to pull her into his arms.

He longed to hold her, to comfort her, but he realized he didn’t seem to have the right to do so now.

All he could do was ask cautiously.

"Miss Mercer, you don’t seem to be in a good mood. Are you all right?"

"I’m fine."

Claire Mercer didn’t want to project her negative emotions onto an innocent person.

"Come on, I’ll take you back first. Where are you staying?"

’She’s so obviously upset, yet she’s still forcing a smile for me.’

Adrian Sutton’s heart ached for Claire Mercer even more.

"I’m staying at a hotel for now," he replied.

"You’re staying in a hotel?"

Adrian Sutton nodded.

The high-end villa development his group had built in Rhonia had sold out as soon as it opened.

Although he had kept the best unit for himself, it was a gift for Claire, so he couldn’t move in.

He had rushed to Rhonia just a few days ago, so of course he was staying in a hotel.

"I can tell from your accent you’re not from Rhonia, but you didn’t find a place to live before you started working here?"

"No, I’m still looking for a place."

’Now that Claire is getting a divorce, my chance has come. I plan to stay in Rhonia for the time being.’

But when Claire Mercer heard he was still looking for a place, she thought, ’This guy must be really broke.’

’He rushed off to work at the club before he’d even found a place to rent.’

’He probably didn’t have money for a deposit before he started working.’

’Sigh, being a Rhonian Drifter really isn’t easy.’

"I know Rhonia pretty well. If you need any help, you can ask me."

"Okay, thank you, Miss Mercer. You’re so kind!"

Claire Mercer didn’t really want to meddle in other people’s business.

After all, she had a mountain of her own problems to deal with.

But seeing that he was unemployed and knew no one in Rhonia, what if he got tricked by a real estate agent and scammed out of his money while looking for a place...

’It’s a pretty pitiful thought.’

The two hailed a ride-share on the side of the road.

The original plan was to take Adrian Sutton back to his hotel first.

However, his hotel was on the way past the Crestfall Villa District, so they decided to drop Claire Mercer off first.

On the way to Crestfall Villa, neither of them spoke.

Claire Mercer clearly had something on her mind and kept staring out the window.

Adrian Sutton desperately wanted to comfort her, but he was afraid of annoying her and making her think he was being nosy.

So, as she looked out her window, he watched her from the reflection in the window on the other side.

The car soon arrived at Crestfall Villa.

Just as she stepped out of the car, Claire Mercer saw Gavin Sinclair standing under a streetlight by the main gate, staring at her with a grim expression.
