Chapter 56: Chapter 56: A Tender Girl

It was hard to say whether Master Jennings’s words were a blessing or a curse.

In any case, he was right on the money.

When Connor Quinn didn’t answer right away, Master Jennings pulled rank. "One hour. Bring your girlfriend home for lunch. You hear me?"

Connor Quinn glanced at the delicate woman on the sofa. "Yeah," he said, his voice level.

After hanging up with Master Jennings, Connor Quinn leaned against the window and lit a cigarette.

Halfway through his cigarette, his Adam’s apple bobbed. "Have you ever been to the Jennings estate?" he asked.

With only the two of them in the room, it was obvious who he was talking to. 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮

Moira Sloan’s long, curled lashes fluttered up. Her gaze was captivating. "I have. What about it?"

In the years she’d dated Shane Jennings, she’d been to the Jennings estate quite a few times.

They had been in a serious relationship, and marriage was once the goal.

They hadn’t hidden their relationship. They were completely open about it.

Connor Quinn’s brow furrowed. "Master Jennings called. He wants me to bring you over for lunch in a bit."

Moira Sloan raised an eyebrow, a hint of resistance in her voice. "How would Master Jennings know I’m here?"

"He probably doesn’t know it’s you," Connor Quinn said, his expression unchanged. "Just that I brought a girlfriend with me to Atheria."

’Oh, so he wants to meet his future granddaughter-in-law.’

Moira Sloan crossed her legs and mulled it over.

If it were just a matter of dealing with Master Jennings, she had a hundred and one ways to get out of it.

The problem was, Laura Cheney and Shane Jennings already knew the "truth." This was something she couldn’t hide.

Besides, she had to sit at the head table tomorrow.

After weighing her options, Moira Sloan decided the best approach was to stay the course.

"I’ll go."

Connor Quinn stubbed out his cigarette. "My relationship with the Jennings family isn’t great."

Moira Sloan snorted. "I know."

’It would be a miracle if you were.’

’With the Jennings family’s wealth, if they had ever taken Connor Quinn seriously, whatever fell through the cracks would have been enough for him and his sister to live in comfort for the rest of their lives.’

’But just look at him and his sister.’

’They were even struggling to pay for medical treatments and surgery.’

’And on top of that, the man was over thirty and didn’t even own one decent outfit.’

’The only three he had were ones she’d bought for him.’

Having agreed, Moira Sloan stared intently at Connor Quinn.

Studying his features, his whole aura, she somehow felt that this couldn’t be his lot in life.

’Was he a diamond in the rough?’

’If so, that potential was buried awfully deep. He was over thirty with no signs of success.’

The thought made Moira Sloan smile.

They drove from the hotel to the Jennings estate. Sitting in the car, Moira Sloan looked at Connor Quinn’s empty hands. "Are you going empty-handed?"

Connor Quinn’s tone was calm, and not in a fake way. "What am I supposed to bring?"

Moira Sloan let out a soft laugh. "You’re visiting your elders. Shouldn’t you at least bring a small gift?"

Connor Quinn’s brow knitted. "I didn’t really interact with elders growing up."

At his words, the smile on Moira Sloan’s face stiffened.

Connor Quinn was an orphan, and he and his sister had relied on each other since they were young. She had forgotten that for a moment.

Maybe it was because they were kindred spirits in this regard, but Moira Sloan was especially empathetic when it came to "broken" homes.

Still, she couldn’t bring herself to apologize just then. After a pause, she raised a hand and toyed with a lock of her hair. "You provide the money, and I’ll buy the gift."

"Okay," Connor Quinn agreed at once, his voice deep.

Half an hour later, they pulled up in front of a mall.

Moira Sloan asked Connor Quinn for five hundred yuan, which he transferred to her phone.

When she returned, her arms were laden with shopping bags. It looked like she’d spent at least five thousand yuan.

Connor Quinn watched her through the car window. As his eyes swept over the brand names on the gift boxes she was carrying, his heart swelled.

’Stubborn and prickly, yet unbelievably soft-hearted.’

She got into the car and placed the items in the back seat.

As she buckled her seatbelt, Connor Quinn asked, "All of that was only five hundred yuan?"

Assuming he was from a small town and wouldn’t recognize the brands, Moira Sloan lied smoothly. "You’re lucky. They just happened to be on sale."

Connor Quinn’s hand on the steering wheel tightened, but his face remained impassive. "I see."

’Those brands never go on sale.’

’And even if they did, it wouldn’t be for five hundred yuan.’

’Ultimately, it was just a white lie the soft-hearted girl had told to protect his male ego.’

It was over an hour later by the time the car arrived at the Jennings Estate.

Moira Sloan had never thought she would return here after her breakup with Shane Jennings. Pushing the car door open, she had to admit her emotions were... complicated.

But before she could wallow in sentimental musings, her thoughts were shattered by a pair of resentful eyes fixed on her.

Moira Sloan raised an eyebrow. ’Huh?’
