Aether Chronicles: Birth Of A Legend-Chapter 207: Far From Ordinary Now
Chapter 207: Far From Ordinary Now
Raegar’s sharp eyes caught sight of Caspian and the two girls getting close, he remembered what Zahara told him a couple of weeks ago that the dark-haired boy liked the duo and they liked him.
When those memories popped into his mind, it caused a chuckle to rumble from his chest. A teasing grin spread across his face. ’’Well, well,’’ he called out, his voice carrying just enough mock surprise to draw their attention. ’’Looks like you three are getting on mighty well, aren’t ya?’’
His words sparked a fresh wave of laughter from the group. Luna playfully swatted at Caspian’s arm, and Vienna tossed her head back, letting out a dramatic groan as all their cheeks went red.
The chilly air seemed to get to them all and made the group shiver. Just then, Zahara cast a shield around them that wrapped them all in a fleeting bubble of warmth against the biting cold.
Raegar led the group to the girls’ tower, while Zahara and Dominique held his arms. As he stood before the towering walls of Drakenwood, their imposing stone facade loomed like silent sentinels under the dark sky.
The air thrummed with energy, and he could feel the Aether’s gentle pulse rippling across the grounds. ’Looks like the professors keep them running,’ he mused in fascination. ’I wonder where they’re keeping the generators?’
With a deep breath, Raegar shook his head and pressed forward, his footsteps echoing lightly on the cobblestone path, leading his friends toward the eastern tower where the girls would settle down for the night.
Upon reaching the entrance, everyone paused, the weight of the exhaustion and being full thanks to the food settling over them. Dominique, Selene, and Zahara turned to him, their faces softened by the dim light of nearby torches.
Each enveloped him in a warm hug, their murmured goodnights carrying a quiet affection that lingered in the cool night air. They exchanged farewells with Rune and Caspian as well, their voices mingling with the soft rustle of leaves stirred by the wind.
The other girls mirrored their actions, offering Raegar goodbyes. As the group dispersed, the girl’s footsteps faded into the distance, leaving him, Rune, and Caspian alone under the tower’s shadow.
Following that, the three boys shared a glance, an unspoken understanding passing between them. With a nod, they turned and made their way toward the dormitories, the path winding through Drakenwood’s quiet streets.
The glow of lanterns cast long shadows, and the distant hum of the Aether shield seemed to follow them, a reminder of the school’s ever-present guardianship. Their steps were unhurried, each lost in their thoughts.
As Raegar walked along the cobblestone path toward the dorms, the night air brushed against his face, carrying the hum of the shield. His gaze drifted upward, where the constellations seemed to whisper memories of his past.
A wistful smile curved his lips as he murmured, almost to himself. ’’Looks like my old life paid off. I’m far from ordinary now. The angels up in the clouds must be jealous of what I’ve found.’’
His thoughts lingered on the family he’d left behind, their faces flickering in his mind like fading embers. ’’Was giving my life for them a mistake?’’ he whispered, his voice barely audible.
Raegar thought of the twins and the choice that had severed him from that world. ’’It was a beautiful mistake,’’ he said softly. ’’One that led me to them.’’
Before the weight of those memories could settle too deeply, a sudden rustle from his pocket broke his thoughts. Drusilla burst forth, transforming into her larger form with a beaming smile.
’’They’re happy, Arthur,’’ she said, her voice warm yet firm. ’’It’s time to leave that life behind and embrace this one. There are so many here who love you.’’
Drusilla gestured toward his friends, who walked a few paces ahead, who were too busy chatting to pay attention to them. Their laughter carried back to Raegar, a reminder of the bond they shared.
’’Rune and Caspian,’’ she continued, her tone both teasing and earnest. ’’They see you as their best friend. There’s no point dwelling on the past. Live for now, Rae, because you’re becoming something extraordinary, and the whole empire is starting to see it.’’
’’You’re right, Dru,’’ he responded. ’’You rested enough?’’
The smiling blonde shook her head and stepped closer so the other two couldn’t hear as she whispered. ’’I’m going to cuddle and drink your Aether tonight, so you might be the tired one tomorrow.’’
Raegar laughed softly at her words as the group of four stepped into the tower, immediately struck by the dim, shadowy interior. Rune took the lead, guiding them downstairs, where a sharp chill enveloped them, the air heavy with the cold of being below the wave.
Five minutes later, Caspian was the first to speak. ’’Guys, I’m going to get some sleep. I’ll speak to you both tomorrow.’’
The giant boy waved him away while yawning, and Raegar gave him a nod before stepping into his room with Drusilla. Once the duo was inside, the Dark Fairy collapsed onto the bed with a big smile.
’’This is so comfortable!’’ she exclaimed.
Raegar let out a hearty chuckle at the blonde’s sharp-witted retort, his eyes glinting with amusement in the dim light of the room. He knelt before the fireplace, its stone hearth cold and darkened by years of neglect.
Using a steady hand, he channeled a surge of Fire Aether, his fingers tracing faint, glowing patterns in the air. In an instant, vibrant blue flames erupted to life, their ethereal glow casting flickering shadows across the walls.
The fire’s warmth flooded the space, banishing the biting chill that had settled in their bones. He exhaled deeply, a sigh of relief escaping his lips as the comforting heat enveloped him, the crackling flames a stark contrast to the cold of the staircase down.
With the fireplace now ablaze, Raegar turned his attention to the opaque window, its surface shrouded in darkness, revealing nothing of the world beyond. As he drew closer, a faint hum stirred the air, and the window flickered to life, activated by the Jellyfish.
Its bioluminescent glow bathed the surroundings in an eerie, pulsating light, illuminating the underwater realm just beyond the glass for several meters. His breath caught as he peered through the now-transparent pane.
Schools of fish darted through the water, their iridescent scales shimmering in hues that seemed alien to the surface world. In the distance, a colossal Kraken loomed, its massive tentacles coiled around the lifeless form of a whale, tearing into its meal.
The sight sent a shiver down Raegar’s spine, a mix of awe and unease gripping him. Yet, knowing the Kraken served as the school’s guardian, he withheld judgment, respecting the beast’s role in this strange, submerged domain.
Moments later, Drusilla, her big blue eyes sparkling with a mix of mischief and warmth, tugged gently at his arm. ’’Come on, you,’’ she said, her voice low, as she pulled him toward the sturdy wooden bed tucked against the wall.
The thick furs and soft linens piled atop it promised comfort in the chilly depths. Raegar chuckled, letting her lead, his earlier awe at the Kraken’s spectacle fading into a quiet contentment.
Drusilla slipped under the heavy sheets first, her lithe form disappearing beneath the layers as she beckoned him with a playful pat on the mattress. ’’Don’t keep me waiting,’’ she murmured, her smile soft but insistent.
He followed, sliding beneath the covers, the warmth of the bedding enveloping them both as she nestled close, her head resting against his shoulder. The pulse of the Jellyfish’s light outside mingled with the distant hum of the underwater world, lulling them into a peaceful silence.
The Dark Fairy’s fingers traced lazy patterns on his arm, her breath slowing as she sank into the comfort of their shared warmth. He felt his eyelids grow heavy, the weight of the day melting away.
Wrapped in the cocoon of covers and each other’s presence, the two drifted into a deep, restful sleep, the tower’s quiet embrace shielding them from the mysteries of the sea outside.
By the time he woke up the next morning, something was slamming up against the window, causing his gaze to snap toward the noise. He got out of bed and noticed several sharks eating the fish outside.
’Breakfast maybe?’ he mused with a tired smile. ’I wonder where the kraken is.’
Following that, Raegar sat on the edge of the bed and shook his head before looking at the sleeping Drusilla, who was letting out an adorable snore as her pointy ears twitched. He leaned over and kissed the Dark Fairy on her cheek.
This woke her up as her eyes fluttered open, only for her to smile as she mumbled. ’’Why are you kissing me when I’m sleeping? Do it when I’m awake, Rae.’’
Just then, Drusilla wrapped her arms around his shoulders before pulling him into a passionate kiss, which he happily reciprocated while being dragged into bed again.
