Chapter 33: A monster of the abyss

Staring at Kev with six pairs of eyes radiating intense malice was a creature with the lower body of a spider and the upper body of a female.

Its exoskeleton was the color of black ash, covering every inch of its body in a natural layer of defense that seemed unbreachable.

Four arms extended from its waist. Two ended in unnaturally long, human-like hands with black, dagger-like nails, while the other two were sporting curved, blood-stained sickles.

Its twelve-foot tall body was balanced on eight long, bristly legs with sharp, pointy ends resembling the tips of spears, as it towered over Kev, who looked tiny in comparison.

It felt wary of Kev, so it didn't charge in blindly, trying to determine whether he was a prey to be hunted or a predator that was better off left alone.

"What manner of creature is this?" muttered Kev as he stared at it vigilantly while backing away slowly. He didn't want to provoke it into attacking him, so he didn't dare be loud or hasty.

He didn't have to wait long to have his question answered as entire sentences appeared in the sentient book hovering beside him in a flash. Although his eyes were on the monster before him, he caught sight of these words from his peripheral vision.

"It's a female corpse spider standing at the threshold of maturity. Thank God it's not fully mature," Natasha revealed.

"Is it really something to be thankful about?" Kev asked dryly.

"Damn right it is," Natasha replied. "If you had faced a Corpse Spider in the final stage of its growth, we wouldn't be having this conversation right now because you would be dead. Against this one, however, you have a chance to survive if you play your cards right."

"Although I've become strong enough to crush evolved revenants like bugs, I can't bring myself to doubt your statement for some reason," Kev said.

'He is different,' thought Natasha. 'Despite experiencing explosive growth in his strength and gaining too much power in too little time, he hadn't let arrogance take root in his heart and blind him unlike his predecessor, who ignored my goodwill after gaining some strength and paid for it with her life.'

Most people who gained immense power in a short span of time often became reckless and deranged, dismissing advice and downplaying threats.

Natasha had the misfortune of interacting with such a fool not too long ago.

She was worried Kev would be like that too, but he had just proved her worry to be unfounded.

He respected danger when it was due, and he was willing to listen to the well intended advice of those less ignorant than himself!

That was a good sign.

It made her feel relieved about a lot of things.

"It's great that you're willing to listen to my advice. Your predecessor didn't. Now she's a monster prowling about, haunting the living," she said to Kev, who looked shocked upon hearing her words.

"Wait, you were someone else's guide before me?" He asked curiously.

"I'm afraid we don't have the time for this," Natasha replied, as the female Corpse Spider began to slowly crawl forward.

It could be said that the wariness that had arisen in its heart due to Kev surviving the ambush tactics it had mastered over the course of its life and used to catch hundreds of unsuspecting passersby off guard in these very tunnels had finally dissipated!

There was no part of it that regarded him as a threat anymore. At most, it viewed him as a tougher nut to crack than all its previous victims.

Its fangs twitched in anticipation of the moment it would have Kev vulnerable and helpless in its deadly grasp as it closed in on him with predatory intent.

'Looks like I have no choice but to fight,' thought Kev as he changed his equipment with a thought, switching his sword for a rifle before opening fire.

Ratatat!

Bullets flew out of the barrel and quickly found their mark. How could they not, when it didn't bother evading?

"W-What the? All that shooting did nothing!"

Kev was taken aback as he watched the bullets bounce harmlessly off its skin, as if he had pelted it with pebbles instead of lead.

The female Corpse Spider walked through the gunfire like it was nothing, approaching Kev menacingly.

In the face of such monstrosity, Kev retreated step by step, planning his next move. Guns and rifles were useless against it. What should he rely on next?

Suddenly.

It launched itself at him with terrifying speed.

A blink of an eye later, it was upon him.

A sickle stained with the blood of its previous victims came slicing down toward his neck.

He had felt it coming!

He quickly leaned back to dodge.

Bam!

Its sickle missed his neck by a hair's breadth and struck the wall, carving a deep gash into it.

Seeing its prey evade the first strike, the female Corpse Spider's eyes turned fierce, and with a screech, it swung both of its sickles at Kev.

Attacks were coming at him from two different directions.

Even in the face of this situation, Kev didn't panic, remaining calm and composed like a veteran fighter.

The incoming sickles weren't fast enough to threaten his life, after all.

With a focused gaze, he read their trajectory like the back of his hand. Then, with a thought, he switched his rifle for his sword and raised it in front of himself to block.

Clang!

There was a sound like a hammer slamming against a steel plate.

The female Corpse Spider's sickles slammed into Kev's sword.

The force behind the blows pushed him back several steps, even as he held firm and blocked them.

It was clear who came out on top in that exchange.
