Abandoned by the Alpha, I Became the Lycan King's Mate-Chapter 263: Subvert the old order
[Donald’s POV]
Margaret being shot and wounded shattered much of my sanity, and I hadn’t even thought of such a solution beforehand!
I took the satellite phone from Benjamin’s hand, without the time to blame myself for the oversight, and started contacting the Palace’s military arsenal manager, also the officer in charge of military supplies, Charlie, while also issuing an urgent command to the Holy Medical Pavilion.
After I had finished all that, I breathed a slight sigh of relief and looked down at Margaret in my arms.
"The Lycan Queen and Elliot’s injuries are severe, warranting exceptional actions. I believe the council won’t trouble us over this, Your Majesty. You needn’t worry too much,"
Perhaps seeing my despair, Benjamin spoke up, attempting to console me.
I knew what Benjamin was worried about, but those things didn’t really concern me. All I was thinking about was Margaret’s injuries.
Leading the werewolf royal family, we stood as the most distinguished entity within the werewolf world, the guardians of every independent werewolf pack, enjoying the love and trust of all werewolves.
But this does not mean we can casually interfere with the internal order of their packs or conduct military activities within their territories without cause, unless it pertains to their own safety!
Of course, situations like Austin’s, which had already exceeded our normal procedures, were another matter entirely. As the Lycan King of the Royal Family, it was only right for me to investigate him.
In short, werewolf packs must obey the Royal Family, but the royal personnel must not abuse their power for personal gains. Our relationship isn’t strictly hierarchical but one of guardianship and fidelity.
This is precisely why Benjamin was so concerned about me openly using military equipment from the Palace at the border of the Windstorm Pack; it was a different matter from a defensive counterattack when faced with danger.
The council always had the duty to supervise me, so their reaction to such actions was perfectly normal!
However, I didn’t care about that at all; rules are rigid, people are not. Often, we need to be flexible in our actions.
Benjamin’s concerns were reasonable. I took a deep breath and said softly, "I’m not worried about such things. I’m just reflecting on the situation we encountered on the battlefield. Those rogues who had completed the shift, their fur and muscles could even block bullets. What do you think about that?"
"And Angel, she was severely injured by us in the Misty Forest just a few days ago. How could she have recovered so quickly? There must be something else going on that we don’t know about,"
I suddenly realized that all these things could be discovered through interrogating Angel, and temporarily put that matter aside in my mind.
Benjamin didn’t know what I was thinking and after a moment of contemplation, he replied, "Your Majesty, I witnessed all the situations you mentioned, and they are indeed very strange. Yet, if we link them to the previous research involving Blood Crystal Grass, wouldn’t it be a bit easier to understand?"
"Rogue wolves, in our usual understanding, are nothing more than vermin, impossible for anyone to recruit or use, unless there’s a reason compelling them to act accordingly..."
I thought of what Benjamin said, but observing his thoughtful expression, I followed his train of thought and asked, "Like what? What sort of lure would satisfy their greed and desires?"
"The answer is quite clear already. A robust physique that fears no bullets, and the overturning of the entire werewolf royal family, or rather, all the orders of the ’Old World’ that are adverse to them!"
"Considering MASTER’s usual way of doing things, the answer is self-evident. They are targeting you, Your Majesty. Could it be that they want to establish their own order?"
This shocking statement flowed from Benjamin’s mouth, startling even him!
I looked at him calmly and did not immediately endorse his words. I had thought through these things long before, and the situation was far more severe than Benjamin imagined. For instance, the sequential betrayals and changes of Angel and Austin, all attributable to MASTER’s great feats.
What I needed was not a guess but a theoretical basis supporting the inference, like Benjamin’s research on the unusually strong transformations of enemy werewolves, the discovery of the effects of Blood Crystal Grass!
"Your Majesty, don’t you find their methods incredibly bizarre?"
Seeing that I had yet to speak for a long while, Benjamin thought for a moment and then asked me again.
"I have already thought of what you mentioned before; I need more concrete evidence. Their biochemical research on werewolves is so advanced; shouldn’t we learn from it too?"
