A Night of Desire-Chapter 42: So Kind as to Take Me to School
Sienna glanced at Seth, who was sitting across from her. She was about to say something, but seeing him start on his breakfast, she held her tongue, adhering to the principle of not speaking during meals.
She glanced over at Theodore at the head of the table and saw that he too was eating in silence, his head lowered. Sienna had no choice but to pick up a slice of bread and start spreading jam on it.
Just as she raised the jam-covered toast to her lips and took an elegant bite, a young voice—sounding somewhat lazy and nonchalant—rang out from the dining room entrance.
"Dad, Mom, Seth, I was only a little late. Did you really have to make such a big fuss and have Mrs. Wyatt call Orchidia to rush me?"
Seth merely lifted his gaze to give him a cool glance before returning to his breakfast.
Seeing her younger son, Sienna beamed and beckoned him over to sit beside her. Once she swallowed her bite of toast, she spoke. "Miles, your father is only looking out for you. Everyone knows a good day starts in the morning, and breakfast is crucial. You have to eat on time to stay healthy. Health is your greatest asset. Without that capital, how could you possibly act well, right?"
"Mom," Miles draped an arm over her shoulder affectionately before sitting down beside her. "A good day starts in the morning, and to me, that means you’ve got to sleep in to be energized and in top form! I didn’t get home until the middle of the night after we wrapped filming, and I can’t even get a proper rest. Give me a break, will you?"
The words had barely left his mouth when a spoon clinked softly against the rim of a bowl. He glanced over nonchalantly to see Theodore looking stern. "Eat!"
Sienna shot her son a look. Miles shrugged, fell silent, and started to eat.
The family of four ate in elegant silence. The servants waiting nearby also moved with quiet grace, so for a time, the only sound in the dining room was the occasional soft clink of a spoon against a porcelain bowl.
After they finished breakfast, Theodore took a napkin and delicately wiped his mouth, then his hands. He eyed his younger son, who had also just set down his spoon, and spoke in a stern voice.
"So, you have it hard? You think filming a movie is so hard? There are plenty of people in this world who have it much harder than you. But no matter how difficult things get, you still have to follow the rules. Without rules, there can be no order. Otherwise, wouldn’t the world descend into chaos?"
’His father’s reaction time was unbelievably slow.’ Miles had to stifle a laugh. It had taken him the entire duration of a meal to finally respond to the topic from earlier.
’Besides, it was just a casual joke, and his father had somehow managed to escalate it to the potential collapse of world order. The man was really something else.’
He also grabbed a napkin to wipe his mouth and hands, tossing it into the wastebasket as he spoke with a smile. "Yes, yes, you’re absolutely right. Everything you say is correct, sir."
Theodore huffed softly, then rose and walked out of the dining room. Sienna and her two sons followed.
Seth raised his eyes to his younger brother walking beside him and asked in a neutral tone, "You going to campus today?"
Miles nodded with a "mhm." "I’m about to graduate, so I figure I should at least show my face, you know? Keep people from saying I’m acting like some big-shot celebrity who’s too good to be seen."
Seth’s deep-set eyes betrayed no emotion, and his tone was just as detached. "You didn’t drive back yesterday, right? I’ll take you."
Miles looked as if he’d just heard the most incredible thing. His eyes went wide as he stared at his older brother, who had never before been so kind or considerate. "Really? Bro, did something amazing happen while I was gone? You’re being so nice, offering to drive me to campus yourself?"
"You don’t need a ride? Then forget it." Seth arched an eyebrow.
"I do! Of course I do! It’s not every day you’re this considerate, Bro. How could I possibly refuse?"
Just as they stepped out of the dining room, the front door was pushed open, and a crisp, cheerful voice rang out.
"Dad, Mom, Seth, Miles, I’m home!"
