Chapter 314: Chapter 310: Do You Take Jing Jihan for a Cripple?

Jiang City, a police department apartment.

Because it’s New Year’s Day, Shi Mianmian’s kindergarten is on holiday today. When Shi Su came to have lunch with Wen Ke at noon, she brought Mianmian along, saying that she had a dinner with advertisers to attend in the evening and would leave Mianmian with Wen Ke for the day.

Wen Ke is usually busy, and even if she wants to visit Mianmian often, she doesn’t have the time. The holidays just ended recently, and a big case came up in the bureau that took a few days of early mornings and late nights to solve. Today on New Year’s Day, Wen Ke finally gets a day to rest.

"Keke, what’s this?" Mianmian asked while obediently drawing with watercolor pencils her mommy brought her in Wen Ke’s apartment. She wasn’t making any trouble but got bored after drawing for a while and started looking at things in the drawer beside the sofa.

The drawer was already open; Mianmian didn’t open it herself, but she couldn’t resist her curiosity and kept looking inside at things she had never seen before.

Wen Ke was baking cookies for Mianmian and returned to the living room upon hearing the question, seeing Mianmian bending over by the drawer at the coffee table.

The police department’s apartment was a place assigned by leadership, and other officers had lived here before. Although the environment in such an apartment is decent, many of the furnishings have small issues due to years of wear and tear.

For example, that drawer sometimes wouldn’t close properly, and parts often fell and got stuck.

Wen Ke had repaired it many times, but it kept breaking down.

Since it was a government-assigned apartment, she didn’t feel right changing the furniture, and since nobody else usually came to visit, she simply left it as it was without replacing it.

Mianmian had seen the two sets of black bulletproof vests and police gear in the drawer, including gas masks and the gun Wen Ke brought back from the United States.

Wen Ke walked over and lifted Mianmian back to the sofa: "These are things Auntie used overseas; I brought them back when I came home. You know Auntie’s job is to catch bad guys, and those are essential gear, but they’re very dangerous and not for kids to look at or touch. Remember that, okay?"

"Oh, oh." Mianmian nodded, looking up with reverence and saying, "My teacher said that police officers protect children. Does Keke also protect children?" 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮

"I do." Wen Ke kissed Mianmian’s little face, then felt it wasn’t enough and hugged her chubby little body for another kiss.

She usually showed no extra expressions; her nature was cold inside and out. Her once fiery passion and impulse had long faded away, and now the only bit of tenderness she had left was reserved for Mianmian.

After coaxing Mianmian to sit quietly and continue drawing, Wen Ke glanced at the time.

Half an hour ago, Shi Su sent her a WeChat message saying that if she didn’t hear back from her within an hour or didn’t receive any messages, Wen Ke should immediately go to the VIP room on the third floor of the Biyin River Hotel.

The dinner party tonight was something Shi Su couldn’t avoid, but because of her current manager’s connections, there was suspicion that the drinks might cause problems. Even if nothing was wrong with the drinks, they couldn’t be rejected easily. If Shi Su somehow found herself in a predicament, she would rely on Wen Ke to be her savior.

It had been half an hour, and Shi Su hadn’t sent any further messages.

Wen Ke sent a WeChat message to Shi Su. After a few minutes, there was still no reply.

The Biyin River Hotel in Jiang City was only a fifteen-minute drive away, but Wen Ke decided not to wait any longer. She took out the freshly baked cookies, putting some in a small jar for Mianmian to eat in a bit, leaving the rest out, and got Mianmian’s coat to dress her, preparing to take her out.

After dressing Mianmian, Wen Ke was about to go back to the bedroom for her own coat when she suddenly heard the doorbell.

She paused, glancing back towards the door.

She had only been in Jiang City for a few months and, outside of working hours and case investigations, didn’t socialize much with the officers at the bureau. She didn’t even bother to maintain a colleague relationship privately. While this was a police department apartment, many officers’ families lived here, so it wasn’t uncommon to see the elderly and children. The security facilities weren’t particularly comprehensive, making it easy for anyone to get in.

Since Shi Su hadn’t replied to her WeChat message, it couldn’t be her outside the door.
