30 Days of Passion and Revenge-Chapter 77: A Night to Remember
Even if she wasn’t feeling particularly dreamy, the sudden realization of her childhood dream house materializing before her eyes was still shocking. Alex opened a small window for her, allowing the distant sound of the waves to reach the room. She didn’t fall asleep listening to it; instead, she was more awake than ever.
Lily sat up from the bed, put on her jacket, and carefully hopped downstairs on one foot, trying not to land too hard on her sprained foot. When she reached the bottom, she immediately got into her wheelchair and went outside, carrying a portable lamp.
After this trip, she probably couldn’t come to the beach for a long time. Lily turned on the portable light to see how far away the beach was. Looking up, she saw Alex sitting alone on the beach under the light, wearing only a shirt and pants, no jacket. His back appeared forlorn and lonely against the vast sea.
Lily suddenly wanted to turn back, but it was too late. Alex felt a light and turned around, his brows slightly knitted as he stood up and jogged towards her. "It’s dangerous to come to the beach alone at night."
"You’re not over here too," Lily replied with a faint smile.
"How did you get downstairs?" Alex squatted down nervously to check her feet. "Didn’t I tell you to call me and Henry if you wanted to do anything?"
If she needed to go to the restroom, would she call him and Henry?
"My feet are already much better; it’s fine," Lily retracted her feet and looked at the sea not far away. "What are you doing here?"
"Nothing, couldn’t sleep and came out for a walk." Alex pushed her wheelchair forward.
The scent of the sea grew thicker, and even the sea breeze had a salty flavor. Lily stretched her uninjured foot out from the wheelchair and tiptoed on the ground gradually, feeling the sensation of stepping on the sand.
Alex suddenly stopped, walked to her, and squatted down with his back to her. "Lily, come up; I’ll carry you for a walk."
Looking at his broad back, Lily knew he had seen her silly attempt to step on the sand with her feet. She quickly took her feet back, saying, "No need."
"Lily, be obedient." Alex’s tone was somewhat like coaxing a small child. He pulled over her hand to put her back on his shoulder, rested his hands on her legs, and started to walk slowly on the beach.
Lily placed both hands on his shoulders but didn’t dare wrap her arms around him tightly. His back was wider and more secure than she had imagined. The waves lapping over at night surged out a nice sound tide, and Alex carried her on his back, leaving a long string of deep and shallow footprints along the seashore.
"Alex, go back." Lily looked back. The wheelchair with the hand-carrying lamp hanging on it was already far away from them, so Alex still had to carry her back.
"I’m not going back," Alex refused in a faint voice, extraordinarily stubborn. He carried her on his back and continued to walk forward.
"You’ll get tired. Why don’t you put me down? I can walk by myself." Lily struggled to get off his back.
Alex imprisoned her tightly with force, not stopping his ground. "I’m not tired."
"Lily, has your boyfriend ever carried you?" Alex asked softly, his voice dispersing with the wind.
Lily froze against his back and slowly shook it, her voice as light as the wind. "No."
"Uh-huh." Alex’s tone brought a bit of amusement, the corners of his lips hooked into a shallow smile. "Do you remember when I first carried you on my back?"
Lily pursed her lips. Of course, she remembered. The girl on the following track knocked her down during that year’s gym class race. Alex was so anxious that he carried her on his back and ran to the infirmary. At that time, many other classmates laughed at them, saying that they were the groom carrying the bride.
When the news that they had been engaged to be married spread in the school, the classmates would always tease and call her Mrs. Carter. She shouted on her lips that she would not allow her classmates to call her, but in her heart, she was indescribably happy. She was once equally sure that she would be Alex’s bride in the future; it was an inexplicable conviction.
"Remember." Thinking of the time when he carried her on his back when she was a child and ran wildly through the infirmary, Lily couldn’t help but curl her lips. "That time, you ran too fast and even dropped me."
It hadn’t been severe, and his fall covered them in color.
"It won’t happen in the future," Alex said seriously. "I won’t drop you again."
The sea breeze blew both of their hair backward, and the only thing left in the quiet night was the sound of the waves and Alex’s assurance that sounded so moving. He said that he wouldn’t drop her again. But he didn’t understand; he couldn’t carry her forever. There is always an end to this road; he doesn’t fail her but does the same to put her down. She can’t stay on his back for a lifetime.
Alex carefully put her down from his back, and the two sat side by side on the beach, looking at the waves gently coming in one at a time but never spreading to their feet.
"Dang..." Alex picked up a rock and threw it toward the sea.
"Lily."
"Hmm?" Lily raised her eyes to look at him beside her, the lonely night tinted with a layer of shadow.
"Today is the happiest day in my nine years." Alex gazed at her face and said earnestly, word by word.
At the core of her being, her heart throbbed intensely. Lily was speechless. It had been nine years since she had spent so much time with Alex. It was the happiest day for her, too. Today was also her happiest day.
"Lily, I miss you," Alex murmured, suddenly lowering his head and leaning into her shoulder. He did not make much of a move, just leaning into her shoulder.
Lily, I miss you so much. Lily blinked her sour eyes and said wordlessly, Me too.
"Lily, I’ve bought gifts for your birthdays; I’ll take you to see them later."
"Lily, I’ve been to Paris, it’s wonderful, have you been there?"
"Lily, can you contact me often from now on? Just treat me like a normal friend..."
Listening to his broken voice, Lily tilted her head slightly. The stars in the sky were bright, and tears still involuntarily trickled down soundlessly. For a long time, Alex didn’t speak again.
Lily lowered her head. He leaned against her shoulder, having fallen asleep. His eyes were closed, his eyebrows slightly knitted, and his long eyelashes were like wings. His face, close at hand, was reflected in her eyes.
The man, whose heart ached when she thought of him, was now sleeping peacefully against her shoulder. Lily couldn’t help but raise her hand to smooth his furrowed brows, salty and bitter tears slipping into her mouth. Her hand stopped on his eyebrows and slowly traced down over his handsome nose. This close, the temperature ironed into her fingertips made her heart tremble.
"Alex, don’t even frown anymore in the future," Lily said softly. Alex didn’t wake up, leaning on her shoulder to close his eyes and sleep peacefully.
Lily did not have half a bit of sleep, looking at the sea in the distance in the darkness of the night. The ink is not like the clear blue during the daytime; the sound of the waves of the sea one after another. Time passes by, the sky gradually turns out to be fish-belly white, the sea restores its original color, and blue is very beautiful, like satin.
Lily sat motionless, her eyes wide open as she looked toward the gradually rising sunrise over the ocean. The elegant man on his shoulder woke up only then, opening his brown eyes to look at the rising sunrise, and couldn’t help but happily push Lily. "Lily, wake up and watch the sunrise."
"Don’t touch me. Hiss--" Lily’s numbness hurt so much that she huffed backward. Alex Carter looked at her in dismay. "What’s wrong?"
The corners of Lily’s lips barely evoked a smile as she pointed to half her shoulder and arm. "Numb."
"..." Alex remembered that he had fallen asleep against her, his eyebrows knit up apologetically again. "I’m sorry, Lily, I’m sorry... I last night..."
"You’ve told me you’re sorry so many times; there’s no need to repeat it," Lily rubbed her shoulders and said. There was no need to say sorry again. He had nothing to apologize for, and she was as happy as could be.
"I’ll help you rub it." Alex carefully lifted her arm, his fingertips gently pressing on her shoulder and arm from top to bottom as if he were afraid of hurting her. Each stroke was careful enough.
Lily had been sitting in the same position all night, and her body was almost stiff. Alex raised his eyes to gaze at her slightly red eyes, surprised out loud. "You didn’t sleep last night? Is it because I..."
"No, of course not." Lily interrupted quickly and smiled at him unnecessarily, her eyebrows arched as she said softly, "I just couldn’t sleep."
