Chapter 105: A Heart Full of Despair

Lily coughed twice, wiping the water off her face with her hand. Her red, tear-filled eyes opened slowly, and in a calm voice, she said, "I’m fine. I just wanted to clear my head. Why did you come in?"

"Of course, I was worried you might do something rash." Nanny looked at her with deep concern. "Miss Anderson, everything can be discussed. Please don’t do anything foolish."

Lily gave a bitter smile, "Don’t worry, I won’t commit suicide."

She had endured so many years, all for the moment when her father would be released from prison so they could reunite and be a family again.

How could she not hold on?

She felt like everything was in chaos now like she had lost all sense of direction. It was as though she were walking down a dark street with no streetlights, unsure of which way to go...

Who could tell her what she should do now?

If she continued her relationship with Ethan, her father would eventually find out once he was released.

She couldn’t let her father find out... She couldn’t... 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

"Miss Anderson, you’ve been in there long enough. Come out now. We still need to go to the hospital to see Mr. Blackwood," Nanny said nervously, still watching her closely. She even added, "And please, don’t do anything foolish. I’ll come in again if you’re out in three minutes."

"..."

Lily exited the bathtub, her fingers trailing across the foggy mirror. Her reflection stared back at her, looking lost and confused, her eyes red and swollen.

No wonder Nanny thought she was going to commit suicide—her despair was written all over her face.

Lily opened the bathroom door, and there stood Nanny, pressed against it. Seeing her emerge, Nanny let out a heavy sigh of relief. "You scared me to death, Miss Anderson."

Lily forced a smile, but it was bitter, full of sadness.

Nanny gave her a sympathetic look. "Don’t overthink about it, Miss Anderson. Why don’t you go make something for Mr. Blackwood to eat, say some kind words, and he won’t stay mad at you."

"And will he let me go?" Lily asked in return.

Nanny shook her head. "Miss Anderson, your father may not even find out."

"And what if he does?"

Her body was still covered in bruises from when Ethan had pushed her around. Her father had always been a doting parent, utterly devoted to her. He had never so much as raised a hand to her—if she so much as scraped her finger as a child, he would drop everything, hold her in his arms, and comfort her for hours.

When he held her, he said, My daughter will be a director one day. She’s a girl with big dreams, and she’s going to do great things.

He used to say he couldn’t wait to see her on stage, giving a speech thanking him and her mother for their love and support...

If her father found out what she had become...

"Miss Anderson..."

Nanny’s eyes were filled with sympathy but also helplessness.

She knew all too well how domineering Mr. Blackwood could be. He wouldn’t let Lily go just because of her tragic circumstances.

Anything he wanted, he would take. And if he couldn’t have it, he’d destroy it.

"It’s fine. I’ll go make him something to eat."

Lily spoke softly. She knew that talking to Nanny wouldn’t help. Nothing would help... No one could save her.

When Lily came out of the kitchen carrying a large box of freshly baked cookies, Nanny’s face twisted in confusion. She whispered, "Miss Anderson, are you trying to get back at Mr. Blackwood?"

She knew Mr. Blackwood hated cookies, yet she made a huge batch.

"Yes."

Lily admitted it openly. Since trying to please Ethan hadn’t worked, why should she bother anymore?

Maybe making him hate her was the quickest way to end this relationship.

Nanny was at a loss for words.

These two were acting like children, having a petty argument. They were both adults, yet both acted immaturely.

That night, the rain outside continued to pour relentlessly, with no sign of stopping.

When Lily and Nanny arrived at the hospital, the hallway outside Ethan’s room was packed with people and flower baskets, blocking the way completely. About ten bodyguards were holding the crowd back. "Mr. Blackwood isn’t seeing visitors. Please leave."

"I just want to take a quick look at Mr. Blackwood and leave."

"Yes, we just want to see how Mr. Blackwood is doing."

"I’m the CEO of Empire Real Estate. I’ve got urgent documents for Mr. Blackwood to sign."

The hallway was filled with well-dressed individuals who looked like members of high society, yet it was as noisy as a marketplace. Among the crowd were several famous actors and actresses, some major stars.

"What’s going on?" Lily asked, surprised, turning to Nanny.

Nanny sighed. "This kind of small hospital can’t keep secrets. Did you put Mr. Blackwood’s real name on the patient form?"

"Who else would I put?" Lily asked, confused.

"These people heard about it and rushed over, using the excuse of a visit to try and build connections. Let’s go inside."

Heard about it?

But it hasn’t been long since I brought Ethan to this hospital...

Nanny grabbed Lily’s hand and pulled her through the crowd. The bodyguards immediately parted to let them through while the people behind them murmured in confusion.

"How did they get in?"

"They must be Mr. Blackwood’s servants. Nothing strange about that."

Once the door to the hospital room was closed, the noise from the hallway was still audible, though slightly muffled.

"Why did it take you so long?" Ethan growled from the bed, clearly irritated. His left hand, which wasn’t hooked up to an IV, grabbed a cup from the bedside table and threw it across the room.

Lily turned just in time to see the cup shatter at her feet.

When will his temper ever be usual?

Lily glanced coldly at Ethan. He glared right back at her, his deep black eyes filled with anger. "Get over here! I’m starving!"

He had flown back from Germany, attended meetings, and dragged her away from that mixer. He hadn’t eaten a single thing all day.

The noise outside was giving him a headache. If it hadn’t been for waiting on her, he would have transferred to a private hospital long ago!

Tyrant!

Lily’s expression was just as sour as she walked over and casually tossed the box of cookies onto his bed.

Ethan immediately roared, "Lily! What kind of attitude is that?!"

Is this woman trying to rebel?!

Lily pressed her lips together, refusing to speak.

"You’re looking for a beating, aren’t you?!" Ethan shouted, grabbing the box of cookies and throwing it across the room. The lid popped off, and freshly baked cookies scattered over the floor.

They stood there in silence, staring at the mess of cookies.

Ethan’s furious expression flickered with a moment of surprise, but then his face hardened again. He glared at her pale face and barked, "Lily! Pick them up!"

Lily looked at him like he was some kind of joke. "You threw them. Why should I pick them up?"

Does he think of me as a puppet? Or a servant?

"I’m telling you to pick them up. Isn’t that good enough?!" Ethan shot back coldly. Was this woman really trying to rebel today? She wasn’t listening to a single word!

Fine. If this is how you want to play, so be it!

This woman doesn’t deserve any kindness!

Lily stood still, unmoving. Her expression was stubborn, her eyes filled with defiance.

He hadn’t seen that haughty attitude in her for a long time, and he hated it.

Ethan clenched his fist, his eyes flashing with fury.

"I’ll pick them up, I’ll pick them up," Nanny quickly intervened, bending down to gather the cookies. Butler Angus also rushed to help.

"Get out of the way!" Ethan roared.

Both Nanny and Angus froze on the spot, too terrified to move. They stood there with their heads down as if they had done something wrong.

"Lily! Are you going to pick them up or not?!" Ethan got out of bed, glaring at her with a fierce intensity.

Lily looked at him coldly, still silent.

"You stubborn woman! Do you really think I can’t deal with you?!" Ethan shouted, turning to Nanny. "Call the office! Tell them to shut down that magazine within a week!"

Lily stared at him, her eyes vacant.

How could I have thought he was being kind to me? How could I have ever believed that he might let me go if I just talked to him calmly?

What a fool I’ve been.

"Miss Anderson..." Nanny said anxiously, glancing at Lily. "Please, just pick them up."

"Fine, I’ll pick them up."

Lily finally spoke, her voice hoarse. Her eyes were red, but no tears fell. Her expression was almost numb.

She knelt down and began picking up the cookies, one by one, her thin frame trembling slightly.

The room was deathly quiet except for the distant murmur of the crowd outside.

Lily knelt on the floor, her head lowered as she gathered the cookies. A single tear fell silently to the ground.

Ethan stood by the bed, watching her. Her small, fragile figure looked like it was curling in on itself, and the sight of it made something twist painfully in his chest.

It wasn’t the pain from his broken ribs.

It was as if a sharp blade had pierced his heart, spreading an unfamiliar ache throughout his body.

"Why aren’t you picking them up?!" Ethan snapped at Nanny and Angus.

They immediately bent down again, helping to gather the rest of the cookies.

Once the cookies were all back in the box, Nanny handed it to Lily, who forced a weak smile and returned the box to Nanny before retreating into the bathroom.

"Damn it!"

Ethan watched her retreating figure, then raced all the bottles and medicine off the bedside table.

Nanny placed the box of cookies on the bed and, after a moment of hesitation, quietly said, "Mr. Blackwood, Miss Anderson has already cried at home. Don’t be too hard on her. After all, she’s just a girl."

How many women could stand hearing Ethan yell at them so frequently?

Ethan’s cold expression flickered with a hint of confusion. His voice was irritated as he asked, "Why was she crying?!"

If she just listened to me, would I treat her like this?

Every time, she has to push me to the point where I have no choice but to punish her!

Lily, you’re just an ungrateful woman!

After everything I’ve done for you, you still dare talk about ending things?

End things, my foot!

"Miss Anderson’s father is about to be released from prison. She doesn’t want him to know she’s become someone’s mistress. It’s understandable..." Nanny said softly. "And..."

"And what?!" Ethan snapped, glaring at Nanny.

If she had something to say, she should just say it!

"I’m worried that if you’re too harsh, Miss Anderson might... do something drastic."

"Do something drastic?!"

Ethan was shocked.

Suicide?

She wouldn’t dare!

Lily emerged from the simple bathroom, her tears wiped away. She stood quietly by the door, her eyes lowered, staring at the floor.

"Lily!" Ethan started to shout, but when he saw her take a small step back, his brows furrowed tightly, and the anger he’d been about to unleash died in his throat. Instead, he said, "I want to be discharged."

"Huh?" Nanny was taken aback. "But I asked Miss Lily earlier in the car, and she said the doctor advised you to stay for observation. If the facilities here aren’t good enough, I can arrange for a private hospital."

"Stop nagging!" Ethan growled coldly. "I said I want to be discharged!"

Ethan grabbed Lily’s hand and dragged her toward the door.

Lily instinctively tried to pull her hand free, but her strength was not up to Ethan’s, and she was forced to follow him out of the room.
